Victorian racing on Mondays will cease during the warmer months, so the focus this Monday is on a couple of meetings in New South Wales, namely Taree, supported by Narromine.

Bet 1: Each-way – Taree Race 1, number 10: Conquering Kate
This horse has had two runs now for the Bob Milligan stable, and I think the mile third up looks ideal. She used to be with Matty Dunn but has been sent to Taree. First run for the stable was over 1200 metres at Port Macquarie before racing at the Taree mile, where she tried but just peaked late. She should be hard fit and at near double figures early betting, so she’s worth a gamble.

Bet 2: Win – Taree Race 3, number 8: La Biere Choisie
She looks like one of the better bets on the card, so the fact she hasn’t opened favourite staggers me. She resumed over 1100 metres at Scone, where the market said she’d need the run, but she worked home strongly between runners. That looked a strong maiden and much stronger than what she faces. She just has to naturally progress and I think she’ll go close.

Bet 3: Each-way – Taree Race 5, number 7: Blinkin Artie
The $6 opening price looks crazy for a horse that is absolutely low flying. To my eye he should have won his last start over 1500 metres at Port Macquarie. He got a mile back yet savaged the line to just miss out. On that basis he’ll eat up the mile here, and they are talking him up as a Country Championships horse. He has to run well if they are to head down that path.

Bet 4: Each-way – Taree Race 6, number 3: Syrah
This is a former Godolphin gelding who has done a pretty good job this prep for the Ross Stitt yard. I thought his effort last week at Tuncurry was enormous considering he was wide no cover on a hot speed and yet still attacked the line with purpose behind the well-backed Serious Dancer. At around $8 each way here he’ll run a beauty provided that hasn’t busted him.

Bet 5: Each-way – Narromine Race 4, number 2: Free Ticket
Bel Diablo looks the one on form, but I think this bloke can run a race. He resumed at Mudgee where he was back and wide before being presented right to the outside and he worked home quite strongly, I thought, behind Caisson Platoon. He is a second-up winner that draws a lovely gate and gets the claim for Robbie Dolan.
