All the action from Round 16 of the A-League summed up.

Wellington 2, Newcastle 1
The Phoenix hosted the Jets in the opening game of the round looking to make amends for the loss to the Roar the week before. Both sides failed to make their mark in the first half, but the Phoenix finally got on the board first through Jaushua Sotirio, who followed up Ulises Davila’s through ball two minutes after coming on in the 53rd minute.

The Jets later took Westpac Stadium by surprise, when Abdiel Arroyo capitalised on some poor defending, scrambling the equaliser in the 66th minute. The Phoenix wouldn’t waste much time responding. Ulises Davila scored the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute. The match finished 2-1 with the Jets on the receiving end of a loss for the fourth week in a row.

Man of the match: Ulises Davila set up the opening goal, and scored the goal to put the Phoenix in the front. He was a presence in attack throughout the game.

Melbourne Victory 0, Sydney 3
Sydney FC were confident in continuing their dominance when they took on the Victory in Melbourne in their annual Australia Day weekend Big Blue derby. Sydney broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, Alexander Baumjohann setting up Adam Le Fondre for the easy tap-in. Sydney went into the break 1-0 ahead and added to their tally at the return of the half. Kosta Barbarouses scrapped a goal in the 53rd minute.

Five minutes from time Alexander Baumjohann would bob up once again, this time scoring the sealer in the 85th minute to put his side 3-0 up. It wouldn’t be a Big Blue without drama as both Alexander Baumjohann and Leigh Broxham were sent for an early shower during injury time, as scuffles between both sides ensued. The end of the game came moments later, Sydney FC continuing their dominance, unbeaten since October.

Man of the match: Adam Le Fondre produced an influential display, scoring the opening goal and setting up the second.

Central Coast 0, Brisbane 1
The Roar had gone undefeated in 2020 and were looking to keep the streak going in Gosford in the away clash against the Mariners. Both teams had their fair share of chances in the first half but were unable to capitalise. Both teams went into half time scoreless.

Jordan Murray’s shot from range brought the best out of Jamie Young, who made a great save in the closest chance either team had all game. The deadlock would be broken five minutes before time, Corey Brown setting up James O’Shea in the 85th minute. It would be the deciding goal, the Roar holding on to continue their undefeated streak.

Man of the match: James O’Shea scored the winner in addition to putting in an impressive shift in midfield.

Melbourne City 0, Perth 0
Having beaten City in Melbourne a month earlier, the Glory were confident they back up that result once again. It was City who got off to the better start with Florin Berenguer and Adrian Luna both going close inside the opening 15 minutes.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half. The Glory looked to have been awarded a penalty in the 55th minute, with Berenguer colliding with an opponent inside the box, but it was overturned when referred to VAR. Neither side came much closer to scoring a goal and both teams settled for a draw in a 0-0 affair.

Man of the match: Liam Reddy made important saves early, which helped set the tone for his defence.

Western United 3, Adelaide 4
Western United hosted Adelaide in the first A-League game played at Whitten Oval, and it was the away side who struck first. Nikola Mileusnic scored in the ninth minute, feeding off the scraps from a Filip Kurto save.

The westerners levelled minutes later through Besart Berisha, Max Burgess setting him up in the 12th minute. Mileusnic would once again put his side in front, George Blackwood setting him up for his second goal in the 15th minute.

It was raining goals at Whitten Oval. Riley McGree scored the game’s fourth goal of the game in the 18th minute. Besart Berisha scored a brace before the end of the half in the 43rd minute to keep his side in the game.

The westerners levelled in the second half through Alessandro Diamanti, who tied the scores in the 54th minute. Seven minutes after coming on as the sub, Nathan Konstandopoulos scored the game’s seventh goal from range to put his side in front for the third time. Adelaide held on to win 4-3, and these back-to-back wins take them up to fifth on the table.

Man of the match: Nikola Mileusnic bagged a brace.
