Ahhh…The Sheriff brings us crashing back down to Earth. As a reluctant tax payer I’d say I’d be (somewhat) happy to contribute to schoolboy rugby if it meant sustained and consistent success at the pro level. But considering the black hole that is the Wallabies at present, I’d rather see my tax dollars moved into other areas vital to the national interest, like Orica Green Edge or Neil Robertson

Thanks Will. Great question re: why doesn’t this translate to the higher levels. I’m not sure if it’s coaching, or maybe just the uber-athleticism in the pros makes the running game redundant because the defenders are just to quick and strong. Either way this was the most enjoyable rugby game I’ve seen in an age.

Whilst I’m not enamoured by Moyes, I think he’s a solid enough manager to keep the ship afloat. I’m not too fussed that we haven’t made a ‘marquee’ signing. I think there’s enough quality across the squad to match it with Chelsea and City. In De Gea we have a superstar keeper whose only 21 and will continue to improve. He has future best keeper in the world tattooed on his forehead. RVP is one of the best strikers on the planet. The backline has amazing quality, and if Vidic stays fit, is without doubt the best defence in the competition. It all comes back to midfield. And to be honest I don’t think we need to go crazy. Personally I’d love to see Fellaini wearing the red. He’s not Cesc, Thiago etc. But he is a proven EPL performer. Very physical and combative, a knock on recent United teams. Knows Moyes. Can alternate between advanced midfield (and score goals) or play in his perferred rearguard position (which is where we need him most). Plus he’s only 25. Thrown him into the mix, and if Kagawa performs to his potential, I’m confident of a repeat.

Agree that many sides, refs, maybe even the FA, are intimidated by SIR Alex…but you can also argue there’s no way Man City are better than Everton after getting smacked 2-0 a few weeks ago. Champions are built over a season, not over a single result. And no-one – regardless whether you like him or not – builds champions like SAF

Great article Steven. You hit the nail on the head. What bothered me most about the hire of Moyes was the easy comparison people made to Alex’s first years at United i.e. rugged Scotsman coming from a smaller club that punched above it’s weight. IMO this was rubbish as the context was completely different. Discounting the fact that Fergie significantly overachieved at Aberdeen, the United of the mid-80’s was completely different to United in 2013. One was a serial underachiever with a drinking problem, the other a over a perennial champion with a huge mortgage. Apples and oranges.
