Great team – probably the most excited I’ve been about the Wallabies for a good few years. The only change for me would be Hooper in for Gill. I’d also like to see Toomua get his shot, but I agree that Cooper probably deserves first dig considering the game plan that McKenzie will most likely adopt.

Selecting The Roar’s Wallabies: the backs (pt 2)

Chivas, I definitely agree with your concerns – but I also get the feeling that he could be the player that wins the game for us when we need it. It’s a touch choice, especially considering the wing and fullback talent we have. I’m interested to see how he goes over the next couple of super games – seems to be improving with every outing.

And even though he is off to France, I still think Ioane is a big asset for Australia – but how do you cut Mogg, Folau, O’Connor, Ioane, Tomane down to three. Some guys that deserve to be there are going to miss out.

Definitely is a tough one. I’m leaning towards Smith.

I think they’re all playing at a similar level, and they would all do the job well, but the experience Smith has gives him the edge in my eyes.

I read the article McKenzie wrote about how a non-selection would affect the younger guys, and other people saying Smith has had his turn give the younger blokes a go – but surely we pick the best team we can possibly field.

As long as the 7 is picked on that basis than I am happy. And personally I think that would have to be George – but that’s not saying that we couldn’t bring on a Hooper or Gill at the 50-60 mark for a big impact.

I see no mention of Lealiifano or Toomua? Are they not even in the mix for you?

And I’ll throw it out there, does anyone see Folau in the team? You keep referring to JOC and Beale as game breakers, surely he fits into that description – and he would have to be the best in Australia under the high ball. But it’s very questionable whether he is up to the task yet, particularly his positional play – is it worth the risk or not?

Isn’t the scrum one of the only points in the game where all 8 forwards are preoccupied, meaning they’re not floating in the backline?

As someone who is saying they love running rugby, surely you would be pushing for a correction that causes less penalties, as opposed to no scrum at all.

Rugby needs to scrap the scrum

And what about tackling? Far out! High shots, spear tackles…there’s just too much of a chance that a penalty will be given away.

How about the players just touch each other? That way we can make the game even quicker! Won’t need forwards either, lets just stick to backs hey!

I have to say I agree with every point you’ve made.

I felt like the Waratahs played really well, and really, deserved the win. And I think we could have still stolen it at the death, if as you said, Foley stayed on. His running game keeps the defence guessing, straightens our attack up and creates opportunities for others out wide. That’s not a stab at Volavola, I think he’s a great talent – but he was thrown straight into the pressure cooker, in a position he hasn’t played for a while, with minimal experience. There’s a time and a place for replacements, and I don’t think that Foley looked like he was slowing down at altitude either.
