Super Mario Chalmers- Heat can’t beat Spurs while he is on the court. Interesting stats on ESPN about the impact on scoring when Bosh is off the court- would be interested to see if scoring improves when Chalmers is off.

San Antonio Spurs vs Miami Heat: 2014 NBA Finals Game 3 live scores, blog

The above vitriol is simply not necessary. If you disagree with JP simply state your case- no need to personalise it. Lebron and the heat for that matter are very polarising. While I don’t necessarily disagree with the criticisms, some of the points JP makes are valid- Chalmers really is a passenger IMO and really hinders the heats chances. I enjoyed the read JP- I am just enjoying the finals which have been thoroughly entertaining and at times unpredictable.

Why LeBron's brilliance won't be enough

Have to disagree with u planko and I’m a dragons supporter

It’s definitely time to get rid of the video ref- talk about decision bias- Sam burgess try was a joke- tom burgess try should have been given.

Good analysis Steven. I have been following the finals closely although I am not a die hard basketball fan. I suspect that Indiana are far too inconsistent to challenge the Heat- hibbert was atrocious in this 0 point 0 rebound game but has picked up after the team let him have it. I believe it will be 4-1 Heat. Ibaka is a huge loss for OKL but they have a shot and I believe San Antonio will take that series 4-2

There is the rulebook and then there is common sense kites arm landed on him after he busted through a tackle that is not a tackle and I have no time for the dogs.

If that constitutes having a hold of the player you are kidding.

The refereeing has been disgraceful. The Ennis no try is a try everyday of the week. Matai is a grub and has no place on the football field

Thanks Mark,

Yeah that’s what I love most about the game- it is so unpredictable. As a Dragons supporter very dissappointed but picked up my tickets today for the Raiders game on Sunday which should be a cracker.

NRL regular season in review (part I)

I would go with Maguire. Souths haven’t finished top four for a very long time. He has taken them from under-achievers and maximised the potential out of every player. Next season they will be better with Te’o joining them.

Who is the NRL's coach of the year?

Akuila Uate are you serious? The human turn style. He is potent in attack and brilliant to watch but his defence is perhaps some of the worst in the NRL.

My NRL 2012 Team of the Year

I enjoy these hypotheticals and I think you have assembled a pretty good team, I would change a few positions however. Two players who I think had great seasons and are really under rated are Aiden Tolman and Gavin Cooper.

1. Inglis
2. Graham
3. Lyon
4. Morris
5. Tate
6. Thurston
7. Daly Chery Evans
8. Tamou
9. C. Smith
10. Tolman
11. G. Cooper
12. Stewart
13. Fensom

My NRL 2012 Team of the Year

Onside- that depends on who you ask, I think Aristotle would argue differently- based on your above syllogism

Greatest Olympian Ever should not be defined by medals won

I agree that much more scrutiny is required and the approach that Michael advocates is similar to the approach that I think would best determine the ‘greatest’. I would use medals from each of the different sporting categories to determine nominees then evaluate them against the next best in their sporting field, hence why I only evaluated Phelps against other swimmers. The ‘greatest’ would then be determined based on who was the most dominate in their field. My feeling is that Phelps would come out on top but that is a pure assumption.

Other criteria such as olympic records or world records etc. could be used, but for me that doesn’t prove much. Others will no doubt disagree with me but for me this is based on discussions with mates regarding the ‘greatest’ in other sports. The example that comes to mind is Favre v Marino or Brady. Based on my methodology above Favre is no comparison because he only won 1 Superbowl. My mates feel this is a limited view but I would take gold or championships over individual stats any day.

In regards to Dawn that was an error, for some reason I thought she only won two in a row. In regards to your ageist comment about her being before my time nice call, correct, but off the mark.

Greatest Olympian Ever should not be defined by medals won

Determining the greatest would be a challenging exercise and it would be difficult to establish criteria based on how different each sport is. I disagree however that medals don’t at least tell some story. If you compare phelps to other swimmers alone he is a fair distance in front of the field. Let’s just say he has one three times as many gold Medals as Ian Thorpe and twice as many as Mark Spitz. So when you are twice or three times as successful as some of the biggest names you have to be boardering on great. The other thing that should also be considered is that he has achieved things no one else has in the sport- three gold in three straight olympics in the same event. That is usually a pretty good sign of greatness also.

Greatest Olympian Ever should not be defined by medals won

I don’t think Punter has missed the point David. Your opinions are always based on the glass half empty rather than full. Scott is a wasted talent but wait until the open is finished and then get stuck in if that’s the case rather than after he has opened with a 64. The next article you write needs to be about unicorns and rainbows- surely you have nothing against them?

Last night could have been history-making for Adam Scott

So who is he…the green goblin, lex luther or perhaps the joke…r. Perhaps the villian you seek will in fact be Politis once the playing roster gets fed up that they can’t miss pre season and decide which teams they will line up against. The Roosters already have enough problems and in the words of the the great Notorious B.I.G mo money mo problems. $BW

Lewis, Sonny Bill, more ranting and raving

I am happy for SBW to re-join the NRL after his ban but think you are totally overestimating the interest that it will bring to the game. As far as I can tell it wont attract new supporters or sponsors to the game. In the scheme of things no one is bigger than the game, a flash of brilliance here and there is nothing compared to a good close game, a great Origin series or finals footy. The thing I find funny is that he is suddenly a man of his word (the handshake agreement) yet he walked out on his team mates with no word of explanation. To be perfectly honest with you everyone should get behind it as it means another season of misery for the Roosters. WOuld you want to play with him? Ryan you seem pretty excited by his return as you have written about him previously although by your own admission you will probably boo him as well……not sure I understand the logic on that one.

As far at the Reynolds boys are concerned the more I see the more I like but lets see them prove themselves over a number of years before they get a look in at Origin level. That is the problem with us New South Welshman we never stick with a plan and we hail the next big thing before they have totally acquitted themselves in first grade. Hasn’t Josh only played 15 games? Remember that Mortimer guy that had a stellar debut season then moved to the Roosters…..

Lewis, Sonny Bill, more ranting and raving

Those teams ‘choose to’ because they need the money and are competing in the tight Sydney market. The warriors argument is out of our hands given that they are not eligible to play SOO so it can’t be seen as an advantage. That is like saying the Eels were advantaged because only Hayne played. In regards to Bronco favoritism, I suggest only that the Friday night game be shared across the league.

Five talking points from Friday night's games

Solly, The Bulldogs were very impressive on Friday night. Their defence has improved considerably since Des came to town and I think they are real premiership contenders this year if not next. I did however think that Paramatta looked dangerous in the middle section of the match and if it wasn’t for the Bulldogs defence it would have been closer. I am not sure if you noticed but in the last 10 minutes of the game the Bulldogs used 3 interchange players and definitely came home much stronger than the Eels.

Five talking points from Friday night's games

I’m not much of a roosters fan but they certainly have been on the end of some dubious decisions this season.

Five talking points from Friday night's games

Hey matt h, in relation to the issues I raised regarding the Broncos I haven’t suggested that it is the Broncos fault. The NRL is run by an independent commission and ultimately they decide fixtures etc. My point about the Broncos is that their preparation isn’t affected to the same degree as other teams. Generally speaking they play on a Friday night- as they do again this Friday and all their home games are at the same venue. I feel sorry for the Tigers and teams like Souths and Manly who play at so many different ‘home’ grounds. In regards to your other comment regarding the Warriors being a one team country I don’t really follow the logic and how this helps them.

In regards to the penalty count I acknowleged that the Broncos lost the penalty count on Friday but this is largely the exception to the rule. On Friday, in terrible conditions the Broncos still pulled a crowd of 32,000- which is pretty impressive to say the least. The point I was throwing out there is does the crowd in Brisbane influence referees the same way 8,000 at Canberra stadium influence referees?

Five talking points from Friday night's games

I fail to see how Spiro’s article is broadly representative of what’s wrong with Australian rugby when it focuses on the individual results of one super rugby franchise. Some independent non-rugby perspective is required, get in some auditors and canvas all sectors of the rugby community and develop a five year strategy. As far as dwindling crowds are concerned that’s simple, no tries, whistle happy referees and players without personality who aren’t fulfilling their potential.

SPIRO: How I would fix Australian rugby

Hey CC, I know your questions are directed at Brownie but I can’t resist throwing in my own 2 cents.
1. You can never have too many pairs of torpedoes-
2. The Dragons may be onto something when it comes to the number of rakes they have. Rakes are like torpedoes.
3. Ridge was held- Brownie may have missed it though- his blond locks may have obscured his view.

BROWNIE: Give great players more room to work their magic

Robert Lui was recruited? Well done to the NQ back office. Other than that most of your predictions have merit….. Except for Gidley winning the Dally M that has about as much chance as the sharks winning the premiership.
