‘If you think the health of the A-League is predicated on the health of its smallest clubs’

I certainly don’t – and would argue that the ‘health’ of the biggest clubs is far more important to the growth of the league and in turn the long term stability of the smaller clubs. If central coast lift their average attendance 2k a season – it doesn’t mean a thing, they’ll still battle financially. If melbourne victory raise their average attendance to 35k – that grows the pie for everyone. equalised league is for small thinkers

The time is right for Perth to revive their Glory days

Ajax academy widely regarded as the best in the world, it is 100% the right move. If he’s good enough to be getting minutes in the HAL at 16, he’ll be good enough to move back at 19 if he doesn’t cut the mustard.

Makes me wonder though, with clubs like Ajax circling, how he wasn’t selected for junior NTs – particularly as both u16 and u19 sides appear to be going backwards at the moment.

Someone should tell Seb Pasquali that Messi is the exception, not the rule

it is the biggest. and it being the best is obviously subjective, but you’d expect a president to feel that way surely? sound a bit precious mate.

FFA national audit reveals football participation boom

we’ll have to start scoring first mate. we’ve defended brilliantly so far but can’t rely so heavily on the back four to keep clean sheets every game. and just so boring to watch. so boring. kills me.

Wolfsburg vs Manchester United highlights: United bumped from Champions League at group stage

I’m with you Justin.

I recon the public have been sold on McGregor’s bravado. They see him bullying out of the ring, but in the ring they’ve all forgotten Aldo is the bully. McGregor is a good fighter for sure, but even against Mendes he was being dominated before landing a big one. If McGregor doesn’t land a big one early I suspect his lack of defense will suit Aldo down to the ground. Aldo can sit off, nail McGregor with those deadly kicks and play the counter punch game.

UFC 194: Aldo versus McGregor preview and tips

Fantastic result and a bit of good news in what has been a pretty ordinary couple of weeks. Here’s hoping they have the right plan to turn them into lifelong fans.

FFA national audit reveals football participation boom

With the squad at his disposal this is an abject failure of LVG to navigate what was considered one of the easier groups. This is the slowest, least threatening United side I’ve ever seen. I would be sacking him at the end of the year and going hell for leather at either of Guardiola or Ancelotti.

Wolfsburg vs Manchester United highlights: United bumped from Champions League at group stage

Let’s just hope that it bring us all together from now on, big crowds, big tv numbers etc. Of all years we need to be putting up digits to grow the game, this is the one.

PRICHARD: Fan issue just the start of massive shake-up for FFA

Bang on, Janek.

The fans’ verdict: FFA guilty until proven innocent

Yeah, boycotting is ridiculous and a tad ironic coming from many of the same people who whinge about FFAs ‘my way or the highway’ rule. Everyone is upset with FFA to varying degrees but walking away isn’t the answer. I’m a MV fan and it basically comes down to this: I love MV more than I hate FFA, I Love the game more than I hate FFA. I will be attending games. The timing of this is hideous too, as it threatens to derail already difficult media deal negotiations. Many of the game’s woes can be solved with that coin, and to put it in jeopardy is outrageous.

Why are football fans boycotting games?

it’s hardly asking too much, is it? When media call us violent hooligans and terrorists – just have our back!

How bad are the FFA?

You know what that was? That was the FFA telling us all that they care more about their relationship with the media than they do their relationship with the fans. Appease the media by leading with ‘no place for anti-social blah blah’, don’t even mention the fact that fans feel FFA don’t stick up for them or the game. Thought it was almost impossible, I’m now angrier.

David Gallop asks football fans for positivity

that is THE crux of the issue, the rest is all peripheral. Appeals process is the battle ground at the moment while fans are annoyed. The real issue is the lack of two way dialogue with the FFA, and not feeling like they have our back.

The "we" in football is threatening to collapse

hahaha!

Time for football to negotiate a bumper broadcast deal

but your poor wife!

Time for football to negotiate a bumper broadcast deal

Buckley doubled the tv deal. It looks like Gallop won’t. Gallop much better in other areas, but if he fails to deliver financial security for the game (imagine if next deal is only marginally bigger than current) how will he be seen? Given that restrictive finances are the biggest roadblock to growth

Time for football to negotiate a bumper broadcast deal

I didn’t say that it is. There was a figure of $80 mill floating about a couple of months ago and from what I’ve heard – as things currently stand that is unlikely. What I was driving at was that for all of his talk about taking on ‘rival codes’ and becoming ‘number one’ etc, the game (financially) is slipping further behind – making this goal of being number one less likely to happen. So if Gallop doesn’t deliver on that, will he be judged to be successful?

Time for football to negotiate a bumper broadcast deal

I seriously don’t understand why people are so afraid of ending up ‘like the EPL’. Big clubs are going to dominate this competition regardless of having the cap or not, and in reality have been doing it since the inception of the league. Between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the three biggest cities, they’ve been the HAL champions 7 out of 9 times. At the end of this season it’ll more than likely go to Melbourne or Sydney again (although AU might have a say in it also). As time goes by this is only going to become more evident, even with the cap in place. Marquees will make the major difference, and the allure of living in a big city and playing in front of bigger crowds will attract the best local talent.

All the salary cap does is stunt the growth of the league. If fans of small clubs are going to walk away from the game because their team can’t compete financially, they need to realise they were in for a rough time anyway. I mean, is supporting your local team really about that anyway? I also support St Kilda in the AFL who’ve won once in 100 odd years and are more often than not hopeless and disappointing. But I will always love them and watch them regardless.

Govern the A-League salary cap, or just scrap it altogether

I thought Victory were going to throw away the lead again there for a while (would love to know how many times they have drawn or lost this year after taking a lead), though they managed to steady the ship and defended quite well in the end. Hopefully Geria injury isn’t too serious either, I think he is really coming along as a player and may well make an excellent NT player in the future.

Victory put one hand on A-League title

Thanks Fuss. Glad to kick the convo off, I think comments have shown there are very diverse opinions on this topic. For what it’s worth, I highly doubt FFA will make any drastic changes, they are pretty conservative and I guess that’s understandable when you consider where the game was a decade ago. Despite this, I still think something needs to be done with the cap to help our big clubs reach their potential. I can understand people who want to stall the big clubs to protect the smaller, but I think in doing this we slow our progress. I don’t think a team like the Mariners (don’t mean to pick on them, they just fit my example as they are the smallest) have the potential to be much bigger than they currently are. But I can see MV (used as an example of the biggest club) attracting average crowds of 30-40k (stadium permitting) in the not too distant future if they are allowed to grow. Same applies for City, BR, SFC, WSW, PG etc.

Is it time for the A-League to scrap the cap?

Will be very interesting to see how teams like MV and AU fare should they make it. Although HAL tems seem to be getting better in Asia, the real successes have come from teams playing reactively (mainly counter attack etc). We are yet to see a HAL team who tries to dictate possession and play do it successfully in the ACL. Here’s hoping it happens sooner rather than later though!

Is it time for the A-League to scrap the cap?

AR,

the other thing to take into consideration is the effect it would have on future media deals. In a best case scenario, where the big city clubs have spent money, lifted the standard of the league and significantly grown the game in terms of attendance and tv audience, you would also expect media deals to rise in conjunction. The extra money from the media deals would also be funneled back into smaller regional clubs etc.

Is it time for the A-League to scrap the cap?

For anonymity sake, if I called him ‘Hazy’ you’d probably have a fair idea. Played at KB United > West Adelaide > Croatia and finished up at Preston.

The A-League has survived and thrived, let the evolution continue

that’s very positive. thoroughly interested to see what the ‘appetite’ is for football as the article suggests, particularly with the added exposure a commercial FTA network would provide. would also go a long way to settling a lot of arguments that have been kicking around here for some time! for what it’s worth, my view is that if the coverage is right (i.e not presented by sandy roberts) and really get behind it with lots of coverage and promotion, the league is now at a level to be attractive enough for casual fans. time will tell i guess.

The A-League has survived and thrived, let the evolution continue

JB,

As someone who has clearly been around the game for a long time, I’m interested as to your thoughts on where you think the ceiling is for football here. Not so much what you think is possible, but what you expect is likely to happen over the next 10-20 years.
