Matai is a grub and I can’t believe that he only receives one week for that tackle, especially given his prior record. He’s also a massive cheap shot merchant – if you look at most of his tackles he hits people from their blind spot. He’s a real tough guy until he cops a sore shoulder or bruised hand.

The NRL cannot afford any more Matai madness

Matt, thanks for the feedback.

I don’t remember Thurston being at his best in the first part of 2012. Having moved from halfback to 5/8 he took a while to get going and I actually think Bowen has had a larger impact on the Cowboys attack this year than Thurston. Great player, but I just think that Reynolds has pipped him in 2012.

My 2012 NRL team of the season

Hi Myles, nice looking team, although we have quite a few different picks. Will be interesting to see the Dally M positions named tonight.

My 2012 NRL team of the season

Nice team Scott. Interesting bench. Not sure that G. Stewart has had that good a season, T Sims has plenty of potential but has been dogged by injury and I think Kasiano started the season on fire but has come back to the field in the last couple of months.

My 2012 NRL team of the season

Woods had a fantastic season, but he also doesn’t make it into my best starting 13 for 2012. Both Tamou and Burgess were beasts up front. What is your NRL team of the season Mick?

Wow, even better.

Five things we learned from NRL round 23

Gareth, good one. Yep, Hasler is a dead cert.

Agree Mike. They have picked up Todd Lowrie, so that should definitely assist them in the defensive area that has been lacking this season.

Rugby League's 'Moneyball' players

There are 3 certainties for the end of year awards:
– Rookie of the Year: Adam Reynolds
– Fullback of the Year: Ben Barba
– Dally M: Ben Barba

Totally agree Stiffarm. I’m nearly getting sick of mentioning Barba each week – not sick of watching him though!

Fantastic article. I get frustrated by the way Channel 9 and Fox commentators just slip in the odds in football games and first try scorers etc like it’s a normal thing to be involved in. The NRL and other sports have to get tough and boycott all sports gambling adverts during games.

How sports gambling cost me

Eagle, DCE and Foran have been relatively disappointing this year, particularly when compared to 2011. I just thought that DCE really stepped it up when it mattered on Saturday night.

The Sharks v Panthers game may have not been for everyone but I loved the constant changing of the lead and the finish was hard to go past for drama.

Well spotted Nafe.

Oikee, you had me until you mentioned the Pirates (I hope you are joking). A Perth Pirates team would be an absolute joke and an embarrassment for the NRL.

Monday night thriller kickstarted finals fever

I had similar concerns about the 18th man being used and abused by coaches, but I’m not sure that it’s fair for a player to be knocked out or injured illegally by a player from another team whether it’s in the 1st, 30th or 60th minutes.

If a player is injured from an incident that isn’t put on report (eg. doing his knee) I don’t feel as though that team should be allowed to swap him for the 18th man. There are enough interchanges to cover for that player.

For me, the 18th man should be used as a way of evening up the contest (17 on 17) that can be skewed because of a player taking out an opposing player.

Liquorbox, I think that your comment is far too simplistic. Shoulder charges or swinging arms will still exist even when players pass the ball at the line.

Good article, but Qld only play 3 games a year and that is against the same team each time. Qld’s team over the last 7 years has been great, but lets not pretend that NSW has had a strong team. Too hard to compare a Qld SOO team with a club team from any sport around the world, or even an international team for that matter who plays well and truly more than 3 games a year against different opposition.

Where do Maroons sit in sport's best-ever teams?

Big game! For me it’s all about the first 20 mins. NSW got blown away in the first quarter of the game in Game 3 last year and Qld are capable of doing the same again if Thurston and GI go nuts. If it’s even or NSW are in front after 20 mins they may get it done. The one thing I’m certain of is that there will be stink – both sets of teams are pretty toey! Can’t wait!

Steve b, I’m just not sure why they would choose Anderson. His last job was years ago and it was a failure. Yes, his overall coaching record is very good but I’m not sure he is a necessary addition. The club definitely needs some changes in the off season, although one thing I’m really impressed with is their juniors this year – Sio, Blair, Ryan, Paulo, etc – who I believe have all resigned recently. Parra need to stop letting all of their juniors go, and resigning these players is definitely a step in the right direction.

Five things we learned from NRL round 17

Thanks The Barry. On your last point I just can’t see who is going to go on a run? Parra & Penrith are too far back to make the 8, and the Roosters & the Raiders just aren’t good enough. The Titans & Dragons just don’t score enough points in games to put teams away and they both have severely aging teams who are more likely to fall away as the season goes on, rather than pick up the pace. Maybe the Knights because they have won their last 2 games and their coach is none other than super coach Wayne Bennett? But 6 out of their last 8 games are against top 8 opposition (and another game is against the 9th placed Warriors) so I just can’t see them pulling it off….

Five things we learned from NRL round 17

Yep, he caught my eye in that game as well. The last 2 or 3 weeks he has been sensational.

Five things we learned from NRL round 13

I’ve got to disagree regarding Gallen and the Sharks. That guy is the heart and sole of your club. He gets through a mountain of work for the Sharks each and every week. Yes he loves NSW, but I can’t believe that you are saying that he doesn’t give his all for your club.

Five things we learned from NRL round 13

Haha, Parra’s rookies have been good, particularly when you consider how bad the Eels results have been. In saying that, the Hayne Plane looks like he is beginning to take off (and I’m not a Parra fan).

Five things we learned from NRL round 13

Reynolds has had a very good year. He has been very consistent behind one a very god pack of forwards and assisted in attack by a lethal Greg Inglis. Will be right up there with Hurrel and co.

Five things we learned from NRL round 13

A couple of weeks ago I commented on the maturity of Marshall and how his style of play has slowly changed this year. He is certainly controlling games better (particularly with his kicking game). Less flash and more consistency in 2012.
