Great write-up Spiro. Agree with your statement: “There is a sort of emperor complex about his refereeing”.

Cobus Wessels given yellow card for Mitchell mistake

Interesting article mate. I’m not entirely convinced the objective of shortening the game is to slow it down, and I see Lyon’s point.

As you say, today’s game is all about a quick burst; and playing in this style is incredibly draining. I’m sure some of the Saints’ injuries could be somewhat attributed to exhaustion. Not all, necessarily, but at least some. Injuries often occur through fatigue.

I dislocated my shoulder playing in the UK Aussie Rules cup final last year. It was the third game of the day for me. I’d been roving all day, and was a wreck by the time I injured myself. It happened after a contest for the ball when I fell to the ground, and I fell in an unusual way. Due to exhaustion. Most of the other injuries on the day happened towards the end when the boys were spent. I’ve never come close to falling like that before, but when you’re drained, you start losing control. It’s how injuries happen.

Now that’s a mile away from the pace (and fitness!) of the AFL, but you see my point – I’d like to see some restrictions enter the game to help prevent injury. At the very least, exhaustion is a contributing factor to injury in all sports. And a game like AFL – taking such an incredible toll on the body and played at a phenomenal pace – no doubt endures a measure of player injuries as a result of fatigue.

Shortening the game is not the answer

Yeah I agree Scott – buying players from the NRL is a poor solution, but he’s been playing some brilliant rugby and I hope to see him running on an Aussie pitch again soon.

Just had a chuckle at the difference in name – and associated character – between Tiger and ‘Eldrick’.

What will it take for him to earn back his stripes (couldn’t help it) and take back the Tiger moniker?
