Turner is the main one I can see coming in. The rest is harder to see right now but we definitely should be planning for the 2023 WC as England did after their disaster 2015.
Experience versus youth: How will Australia rebuild their ODI team?
Great to have so many guys performing. Hard not to include Wade with this form. Head be in the 11 means we have that added spin option which might be enough to exclude Marnus on.
Marnus will be in the squad though, how he goes when he gets a chance could decide if he beats out Wade in the 11. I think KP has probably worked his way out of the side
Wade and Head make tons to press Ashes cases
We are starting to miss Hazlewood now, he would give us that 3rd seamer we are missing
If we are playing Khawaja he needs to open and push Warner to 4 which gives the middle order a bit more punch if he can find his power again. As mentioned though we should have picked Turner, the guy was the reason we chased our highest ever score.
Australia survive scare to defeat Sri Lanka and go top of Cricket World Cup table
With that series over I’m kinda of thinking taking two leggies could have worked now, Boyce showed he was effective at keeping things tight and taking wickets and Zampa has shown the same. Our quicks have been easier to get a hold of.
South Africa vs Australia highlights: Third T20 cricket, scores
Happy enough with that side, Boyce very unlucky but couldn’t see them playing 2 leggies, 50/50 on him v Zampa but the main thing is we finally have a leggie at a T20 WC.
Nevill big shock but when you don’t have a standout batsmen/keeper then picking your best keeper is the way to go. Paine unlucky I guess but he’s an opener, putting him at 7 he’s probably on par with Nevill so selectors went with the Test keeper.
Agar gives the SLA and all rounder variety, how his bowling goes is another question since he barely did it this season but on paper it reads well.
Nevill the shock inclusion as Australia announce World T20 squad
Leading wicket taker this season, miles ahead of any spinner in the country for any bowling stat you want, what more does he have to do? His stats are Bradman like when you compare it to the other spinners in the country, he must be doing something right to be that far ahead.
Pink ball a game-changer: O'Keefe
That’s who I would have taken, I don’t mind leaving Hughes to work on his game a bit more as we know the selectors will drop him in a few game time anyway and then he’ll go back and score runs at domestic level.
Marsh out, Hughes in for South African tour
The closest thing to Bevan/Hussey has been Ferguson but he’s dropped out of the spotlight. Bailey is filling the void though, see India and England tours where he not only rescued us but bashed some along the way. Smith looks like he could do that role too, that 4th ODI showed promising signs.
One year out, here's my 15-man squad for the World Cup
Shaun Marsh is consistent but still hasn’t got his pacing right, he faces too many dot balls for my liking and it’s been a consistent problem right across all his ODI stints. Christian still not quite convincing me with the bat but wouldn’t complain if he made it but I’d probably pick Maxwell in his spot and Smith for Marsh from your squad. However can’t see the selectors ignoring either players.
Last bowling spot will be interesting, NCN hasn’t shown too much in the longer format and Pattinson still an unknown but looks like they will be fighting it out between themselves. Also would like to see Faulkner playing as a batting all rounder but can’t fit him in there.
One year out, here's my 15-man squad for the World Cup
Harris maybe attacking but he’s usually got very good control hence why his overall economy rate in Test cricket is lower than Siddle.
Drop Peter Siddle for James Pattinson
Sums up my thoughts perfectly. We will always be left to wonder what Hughes could have done if he wasn’t dropped to make up for a misfiring Johnson. Also well said on his latest dropping, again came out of the blue and by the end of the series we had Faulkner playing as a batsmen. Easily the biggest scapegoat going around at the moment.
I don’t mind him not being picked, given the selectors keep mucking him around it probably is best that he spends a bit of time in shield cricket and uses the time to get a real good understanding of his technique away from the spotlight.
What’s a Phil Hughes to do?
Pretty sure Starc will be in the mix, he was killing it with the white ball.
How many all-rounders does Australia want for the World Cup?
Doolan was always a given on this tour, he was an inch at making his test debut in the Ashes. It would be good to move away from ODI form and actually pick on Shield form. Who you would pick is a toss up as half a season isn’t enough nor is a season. This time next year will give us a better idea on Silk, Lynn, White, North, etc
Bailey dropped for South Africa tour: Marsh, Pattinson, Bird recalled
Before the match I would have pushed everyone up one instead of bringing Marsh in. But that won’t happen after he made that 50.
Amazing stuff by Faulkner, he is proving to be quite the big hitter. With Maxwell and Mitch Marsh we certainly have the depth for the all rounder spot.
Faulkner fireworks lifts Australia to win
This. If he can do this throughout the test series then I’ll start having more faith. If he then can do it for 2 years then he’ll definitely have changed my tune on him.
Time to start giving Johnson the respect he deserves
It was great to see this type of knock from him again, last one I remember was in Hobart. This and that innings is the blueprint he should be looking at. He has batted very well in both innings in this match, the first innings had a bit of Langer about it where he would go hard for the first 20 and settle in.
ASHES: Talking points from Brisbane day three
We really need one of our young keepers to step up.
Clarke, Watson named in Aust ODI squad
Johnson isn’t even that quick, he is no quicker than Starc when both are at full flight.
Lee: bring back Johnson
Maddinson might have turned the corner since he’s played for the A team. His last knock showed he can score on a tricky deck when everyone else was falling around him.
ASHES WRAP: Seven positives for the Aussies
It is pretty close between the keeper first, Nevill had the usual second year syndrome which hopefully he breaks out of. Whichever we pick at least we know they will be a fighting batsmen which we need more of although surprisingly Haddin has been alright so far with the bat.
My Aussie team for the third Ashes Test
Cowan had to go after the 1st test and Starc just didn’t look threatening between his wickets which has been a problem for him. He is young and should eventually sort that out but he isn’t ready to be in the best 11 unless injuries strike. Making changes to the batting now would as you said have the batsmen constantly looking over their shoulder. Plus none of reserve batsmen are going to make a difference.
Australian selectors are in a tight spot
Agree with what you mention, chopping and changing isn’t going to solve anything but cause more instability especially bringing back old timers like Katich. If Rogers fails again you probably would look at dropping him and getting Warner back (not that he currently deserves it).
Australia must hold firm with youth in top order
There really isn’t much we can do with the batting. The only guy that we could bring in is Warner and he didn’t show anything in Zimbabwe. Bringing in Faulkner would weaken the batting even further. I wish it was just a simple application issue but each of the batsmen have a technical issue. Hughes and Khawaja with spin, Smith pace although crazily he probably is the least to worry about in terms of technical issues.
Watson looks great until he gets one on the pad, the fact this issue is still there and only really has started to become a big issue now is a bit surprising as I mentioned it a few years back. He’s going to need to sort that out within the next week as we can’t afford 20s.
ASHES: Talking points from Lord's, after Australia fail again
A team without any controversial selections, that’s rare! Hopefully Will gets his debut, wouldn’t mind Green in as well who also gives an extra bowler that the selectors usually love
