I’m playing devil’s advocate, but IMO batsmen racking up 600-650 would make a much bigger statement of ‘We’re back’ than a simple win.
Batting practice sacrificed by Clarke in want for a win
Hughes is a good batsman, but number three is the worst possible place to bat him if he’s not in rock-solid form. Before he made the Test team he opened by default because he was easily the best bat in all the development squads and first-class lineups he played in. As soon as he was demoted back to state cricket he made a torrent of runs (673 runs in 6 games at 56.08) and rightfully earned his recall, and I have no doubt he would have willingly played against South Africa if the selectors permitted it.
It’s a hard choice but I think Cowan should bat three after Rogers and Watson to act as security against collapses. If Hughes bats, it should be no higher than four until his mental game and shot selection can take on the new ball.
Leave Hughes out of the Ashes
I agree on Lyon and Hughes (for better or worse), but Starc is IMO still a line-ball call considering the pedigree of whom he’s competing with – the spearhead in Pattinson and proven consistent veterans in Siddle and Harris, the latter of whom we need as many overs from as possible before he finally hangs up his knee brace.
Starc is clearly the form bowler since touching down in England though. He’s certainly leapfrogged Bird in the pecking order.
Back-to-back Ashes will sort men from boys
Frankly, I’m happy with bowlers that don’t have money on their team losing.
