True, but Oakley, Nike and Trek have other sportsmen to rely upon. Armstrong is just one big fish. To Livestrong he was THE big fish- their founder.
Furthermore, how much blame can be placed at the companies feet when the sport itself cannot police its athletes? Where does one seek to find legitimate sources of fact when the institution that is supposed to be responsible for it is inherently corrupt?
Livestrong, cycling and the Armstong legacy
Difficult to say. As you correctly say, the Armstrong name has benefited greatly from the Livestrong charity and there is little doubt that the members of the charity would have heard some of the rumours. But would they have been able to find the truth out even if they asked? Armstrong doesn’t seem to me to be the type to let people in- indeed those who asked questions were more or less cut off and bullied into submission.
It seems to me that Livestrong had to take the founder of their orginisation at his word.
Livestrong, cycling and the Armstong legacy
I am being a tad generous possibly. It’s hard to know exactly what Armstrong’s exact motives were for setting up the charity- whether it was a mere PR exercise; whether it was his way of justifying his cheating to himself and/or whether he actually had some genuine empathy because of what he went through. But you’re right in that it is a hard road forward for the charity.

I agree Clarke has problems against swing, but that’s not anything that is exclusive to him in the Australian batting line-up. It’s something the team will have to address come the Ashes.
Clarke has finally accepted the inevitable
Sir Garfield Sobers- devastating with bat and ball and in the field. The greatest all around cricketer of all time.
My best 20 sportsmen of all time
Does that mean I am vindicated if nobody comments on this article? Quite a conundrum…
Shane Warne: The face of Australian cricket no more
It seems like a squad that reflects the fact that the selectors aren’t quite sure of the structure of the side post Hussey and Ponting.
Will the real Watson please stand up?
Is he as good as Henriques if he only bats though?
Will the real Watson please stand up?
Some clarification here- I meant that the No. 3 spot was a natural fit for Ricky Ponting. I don’t envisage Watson as a No. 3. Sorry about the confusion.
Will the real Watson please stand up?
There doesn’t seem to be many clubs that are going to exchange coaches at the end of this year- the only other club that possibly might would be Carlton and that doesn’t look as likely as it did some weeks ago so I don’t know if the idea of ‘stealing a march’ on the competition really is all that relevant.
What’s more with the new ‘poaching’ rules in place for coaches I don’t know if letting Primus go now really gives them any hope of talking to current assistant coaches with any real vigour.
Finally, I think if someone was notified four weeks before the season was ended that his coaching tenure was over at the end of the season, it would take a supreme level of effort to continue to care about what they were doing- particularly as some may see them to be selfish for ‘clinging on’.
Why couldn't Power wait until the end of the season?
I think the main point is whether Ross Lyon’s strategy is still the be all and end all that it was 2-3 years ago. Football has taken another step forward offensively once again, and I’m not sure that Lyon’s style gives his side the creative freedom it needs.
Having said that, his record is exemplary and no doubt more will be made of this as the season goes on.
Fremantle Dockers now losing ugly
Yeah, I’m not entirely sure that beating Melbourne by 50+ points is a vindication of Carlton team back on track. It’ll be interesting to see…
Carlton and Melbourne: don't believe the hype
To be fair, I think it was safe to say almost all the clubs had Watts in their sights. The fact that Hurley and NicNat have blossomed quicker is something that is now known with the benefit of hindsight. What needs to be ascertained is whether Watts is a subject of poor recruiting or a poor club culture.
Poor recruiting decisions hurting Demons
Ironic that Hawthorn should complain so much when a season or two ago one of their players in Cyril Rioli was lauded as one of the best tacklers for his size in the game.
One thing that should be pointed out with Selwood’s technique is that if he tries it and finds he can’t pull it off, there is a chance he will be pinned, as he will not be making an effort to get rid of the ball. So there is a risk/reward factor there.
Hawthorn, here's how to avoid tackles
Seems a long time from when they had one of the best Power Forward/Point Guard combinations in Malone/Stockton.
Tough decisions ahead for Utah Jazz
It’s an interesting concept. I am a fervent Essendon AFL supporter, but I am also a historian and I do admit that some of the linkages that people place on the ANZAC match fill me with…unease- though the clubs themselves hold themselves with dignity.
What needs to be remembered however, is like most traditions, ANZAC Day has grown and changed as society has grown and changed with it.
As for the club participation, I think other clubs should share it with Essendon and Collingwood. Maybe have the winner of last year’s Pre-season cup play the winner of the Premiership Cup?
AFL ANZAC Day is not a tribute to our soldiers
Yeah, that is the major concern if you were to err on the side of caution, I agree. Even if it was only for a season or two.
FFA must not be bold for boldness' sake
I agree rob that Western Sydney is probably the logical next choice for a team in the A-League, but would a year or two of preparation and logistics go amiss ( I really meant substandard ‘club’ as opposed to just the ‘team’ )? I am sure Western Sydney would be competitive on the park, but the problem with the A-League has been issues off the pitch. Mistakes need to be heeded and evaluated.
FFA must not be bold for boldness' sake
I agree that the A-League retains much of the heritage of the old NSL but it exists in part as a reaction to the perceived mistakes of the NSL so I didn’t count it as a continuation. But it’s a contentious point and one that I can see can go either way.
I also agree that the notion of risk/reward when it comes to expansion and clubs depends greatly on where you expand to. However, there is always risk to a league of expanding before it is ready. If too many teams are in a competition and some bow out, then the entire league’s reputation is harmed as a result, so the risk is still there.
FFA must not be bold for boldness' sake
Is Twitter a compulsory thing for athletes? Warner seems like the kind of cricketer who doesn’t need it.
