Quite.

Ireland end England's unbeaten run 13-9

The irony before this game is that it was the England fans who kept pointing out that Ireland were more than capable of giving England a beating and so it turned out.

Thoroughly one sided, the only surprise was that there was only four points between them at the end.

It won’t harm England to lose this one, all runs have to come to an end, but the nature of the defeat will cause concern, because they were never in it.

England are a work in progress and that was true whether they won or lost. Ireland should be disappointed with their Six Nations because they are a fine side who underperformed overall.

Yesterday though, just magnificent. This English fan just applauds them.

Ireland were superb, and 4 points did not reflect the difference between the sides.

No disgrace for England, they were outplayed. England are a very good side, and so are Ireland. Well done to them for nailing it.

Ireland vs England: Six Nations live scores, blog

You mean in NZ at the end of a long season for the European teams when they’re fatigued and are missing players through injury?

Funny how it doesn’t seem to go both ways.

Interesting choice of news item for this weekend.

Scotland lose Gray for Italy match

Disappointed Italy dropped out. That would be a great place to host one. Wish Argentina would bid too.

France keen on big 2023 Rugby World Cup

Just a note: the basic hemispheric rule is that North America falls within the development radar of the European unions, not the Sanzar ones. And that’s right too – all of them have to take responsibility. To be fair to the RFU the Churchill Cup was part of that, but no longer.

I’m not saying you are wrong, but that with all of these development ideas, there’s a responsibility within each grouping. Which is why when Argentina were talking about asking to join the Six Nations, the response was that the southern hemisphere needed to get its house in order. With USA and Canada, that’s down to the Europeans to sort. Which they probably won’t.

Super Rugby is at an inflection point

The results were perfectly fine up until the World Cup. He did seem to lose the plot a bit in the tournament. The one thing I would genuinely feel sorry for him for is if he doesn’t get a top level job as a result of that – Lancaster is an exceptionally talented development coach (he’d do a great job with some of your Super 15 sides as a consultant) and will be a better one for recognising his errors in the 2015 World Cup. The thing with him is that I am very confident he will have recognised his errors. He’s remarkably self aware.

With all due respect to both ABs and Ireland, the seismic shock of that result wasn’t in the same star system to the Japan match.

I’ll pass on a personal moment from it: I was in the opposite corner to where the winning try was scored – about as far away as I could be. Yet the one advantage was seeing the pattern of that last Japanese attack and screaming ‘It’s an overlap. My God. They’re going to score’ before many realised.

I can tell so many tales of the aftermath of that game. A truly great sporting moment. One day Italy will beat England in the Six Nations, a lesser achievement without doubt, but I do hope I can retain my sense of proportion to the degree the Springbok fans did that I met.

Really? I suspect based on most responses that mine was more typical. I witnessed the guard of honour for the Japanese fans at Brighton station, and heard about the one at Victoria.

All I can say is that in my own experience they were absolutely amazing. I’m sorry your experience wasn’t the same.

Yes, entirely fair comment and I agree.

I was at the Japan – South Africa game. If you want something to be proud of concerning that game, then it’s the conduct of the South African fans. They were utterly magnificent – gracious, fully appreciative of it being a great day for rugby and downright classy in their response. Not a single one of the many I spoke to was anything else.

I remember when Jones was aiming his barbs at Woodward at the turn of the century, and knowing exactly what he was doing and still getting wound up by him. He’s brilliant at it – it’s a pleasure to be on the other side of the equation these days.

And who wants a bunch of dull automatons blandly repeating press releases? All sports need characters and Jones is definitely that.

“The guy I think again that should get a lot of credit for the team’s success is Stuart Lancaster. He was the guy that brought this team through, went through some hard yards with them, most of the players are still the same.”

Lancaster had his flaws and the World Cup was a disaster, but the idea England went backwards under him is untrue.

Funny thing – it’s only really England’s demolition of Scotland last week that has created this narrative that Ireland will have to play out of their skins to win. I doubt many England fans are anything like as confident of victory as is assumed. Ireland are very capable of winning, England are very capable of playing well and still losing.

Ireland stand in way of England beating world record

You could probably make a case that England are structurally stronger now than they were when that 2003 side were around. That was a great team, but when they all retired there wasn’t much behind it. Compare that to now with the players coming through and winning three of the last four U20 World Cups suggests (and at this stage only suggests) that there is more to come. But we shall see.

I guess you could argue that in the great scheme of things one match doesn’t make a whole heap of difference to either in terms of the workload, but at some point a line has to be drawn I suppose.

Can we have Richard Cockerill and Norm Hewitt squaring off again instead? That was fun – so naturally the Unions banned it. 🙁
