Some justice in the Churchill at least. Classy booing from the fans of the premiers – your team just won.

Well deserved though. I don’t know that the raiders were actually robbed, as they were still unable to cross the line in the second half. But they were damn close.

Roosters go back-to-back at 2019 NRL Grand Final

So true! Bring on the head trainer!

Seven talking points from the NRL grand final

Agreed. Roosters really were way too good, and controlled the game completely… But Souths also dominated the other week, and Melbourne still hung in there until the end and took just enough chances to win it. Last night, they never found the spark under pressure that they’ve shown consistently for years now. So it is definitely fair to say that Melbourne were below their best.

If I were a Roosters fan, I’d just enjoy the ecstasy of their team winning the premiership, and not worry that commentators are somehow taking away from the victory by acknowledging that skill and luck both played their part!

Tim, I’ve been curious about something for a few months, and you’re the stats man to help me out. It’s about Melbourne, the rules crackdown and the subsequent backflip.

Early in the year, it looked like the Storm were gone. 99% of football supporters rejoiced! Then somewhere around the middle of the season, they started winning again, only missed out on the minor premiership thanks to the “efforts” of Parramatta, and are odds on to spoil another season for everybody else.

To a my biased eye, it looked like the crackdown had finally managed to stop Melbourne’s and referee Smith’s ability to control the game by actually, y’know, making them play by the rules. Once things went back to normal, so did Melbourne’s game and the wins started flowing.

But do the stats support this theory? Is there a marked difference in Melbourne’s stats, both in absolute and relative terms, before and after Greenberg’s mid-June proclamation?

Was that the try? My first instinct was forward, but I haven’t seen a replay from a side-tear angle since.

I don’t think they’re biased, just stuck guessing at how to apply some fairly unrealistic rules. The sharks were definitely dumb and panicking at the end, but I think the fifiita knock on and subsequent penalty for 14 all were both quite poor decisions. But so was the penalty when the sharks were pinned on their line, leading to the Bird try. Coin tosses all round.

Cowboys come back to conquer Cronulla in extra time

I’m a neutral supporter, and think several of the strip, lost ball and knock on calls in this game have been dubious.

Sometimes it feels like they should just toss a coin every time the ball touches the grass.

Glad I’m not the only one to notice! It actually does make a difference, because the charging player doesn’t have to time their run. They start sprinting as hard as they can, dummy half gives it back, flat, forward, wherever they happen to be at the time.

Given how rarely its called up, I just wish that Manly would do it too!

Hi Benjamin, I’m a long-time lurker but first time poster, who just created an account to respond to this.

Autoplay *is* common across many websites and streaming services, and I can’t for the life of me work out why. I’m curious, does your focus testing indicate that people do actually like this feature? Do they give a reason why? Because rather than “forgetting” to hit cancel, I instead have to hunt for it every single time I open one of your articles now, and I’ve found that it makes me think twice before opening up a series of them.

If you really want to continue with this initiative, perhaps an account option (now that I have created one) to choose whether I want to autoplay or not? That’d be great!
