2012 AFL ladder prediction, 8th to 1st

Hawthorn are primed for a good year - perhaps inflated when the presumed dominance of Franklin is reinforced every time we see an ad for Foxtel. They still lack tall defenders and they still fade out during quarters; good teams will expose this as we saw in last year's finals. North look set to return to finals though Richmond are arguably in the same position and yet we hold them victim to their history. Hardwick has them more solid than previous versions and with Martin, Cotchin, Foley and Deledio, Riewoldt will get enough supply. Geelong will stay top four and West Coast more likely to slip to fifth or sixth as Le Cras is a huge loss and a sign their luck with injuries in '11 cannot continue. I have Fremantle top 6 and I think the Saints are being overlooked prematurely given they played finals last year and they still have Dal Santo, Montagna, Fisher, Milne, Gilbert, plus the return of Hayes. Riewoldt would be determined to make amends for last year and Goddard is also prime. And even more importantly: no off-field dramas. Adelaide have impressed but I am not sure they are a guaranteed finals side. Carlton fans will know a NAB Cup victory can just as easily be an omen for the spoon. The healthy sign is that for once the hype we hear from clubs every pre-season may be more genuine than in previous years.
