Even if the conferences are not determined geographically, it will provide alot of benefits. Sure there are alot of NRL teams in Sydney (this is a question for another day though), but if say 2+ conferences are set up, not based on geography (just as in the NFL – AFC and NFC), a more exciting and fair finals system will come of it which is perhaps the bigger advantage of conferences i.e. better than having poor performing teams coming 8th making the finals (again, a larger argument for another day).

AFL continues the Americanisation of Australian sport

I think AFL and NRL will benefit from dividing teams into conferences like in the NFL. Australia is similar in size to USA so it will cut down a lot of travelling for players, staff and fans. Plus it will promote more local rivalry as teams from the same geographical area will theoretically play each other more often, ensuring more intriguing games throughout the season with potentially higher attendances.

One thing we do have on the Americans though – professional Friday Night Football.

I fully expect Luck to be the better QB out of all I have listed in the years to come – but at the moment he hasn’t developed as quickly as Wilson and Kaep. His performances in the playoffs are evidence of this – his INT’s were game-changing, and they were mainly all on him. Wilson winning a playoff game only completing 9 passes proves my point exactly – he has more weapons with his ability to run the ball, evade the pass rush/sack and effectively run the read-option which at the moment sets him apart from the others, bar Kaepernick.

Manning vs Brady? Give me Wilson vs Kaepernick anyday

Totally agree. I cannot recall a better Australian sports person. Not only a representative in 2 sports, but she excels at them both.

Ellyse Perry deserves more recognition

It helps when the have 6 free kicks throughout the season, by virtue of being in the same conference as the Jets, Bills and the Dolphins. By week one they have qualified for the playoffs so they have the luxury of honing their style throughout the season for the big games by the time the playoffs come around. Granted, they have been very successful over the past few years in terms of Super Bowl wins so you can’t take anything away from them – and they did prove they can beat the best this year with a great comeback win over Denver. Will be interesting to see if they can repeat this, than adapt to triumph over the ‘Hawks or 9ers style.

The 'Patriot Way' is a myth, they simply play to their strengths

Kaepernick was outstanding yesterday. You are right in saying the ‘second year syndrome occasionally dogged him this season’ but he has shaken that off and pulled out the best performance when it counted. Looks like the 9’ers are hitting form at the right time and because of this, the NFC is now wide open and Seattle are no longer a shoe-in. Great to see 3 of the best young QB’s of the league battle it out for the NFC (Kaepernick, Newton and Wilson) with a veteran (Brees) and 2 living legends (Brady and Manning) battle it out with another young gun (Luck) and a QB trying to make the next step like Flacco last year (Rivers) in the AFC.

Colin Kaepernick: A song of ice and fire

Colts were never in doubt!
Eagles had a chance, that game could have gone either way. Seahawks will take care of the Saints but Carolina/9ers will be epic. Still expect to see Seahawks represent the NFC in the Superbowl so from that point of view my tip for the Superbowl matchup is still on the cards.
Chargers win was never in doubt – Bengals can’t get it done at this point in the year. Not saying the Chargers are better, but Bengals don’t have what it takes for playoff football and Chargers have momentum on their side plus nothing to lose. And San Fran got up in another thriller – great start to the playoffs.
