You’re not the only one, been like that all day and seems like nobody is bothered fixing it

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions Round 16: Huzzah, the byes are done!

Be nice if the tipping page actually allowed me to enter this week’s tips instead of having round 17 up there!!!

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions Round 16: Huzzah, the byes are done!

O’Brien was a clear BOG to me, not only did he dominate the ruck, he also regularly got back for important intercept marks in defence as well as providing options forward of centre.
For a big lumbering ruckman, he certainly covered plenty of ground.

Footy Fix: Just one thing wrong with latest Showdown classic - the time it was played

Wasn’t a captaincy/leadership poll, it was a ranking of players professionalism – Wingard and Polec were clearly rated as the 2 least professional players in the squad by their peers

Your club's underrated performer: Round 6

Incorrect RT, try actually doing some factual research before making an inaccurate comment.
Port Adelaide, upon being granted an AFL license, planned to move on away from the SANFL – the SANFL directors insisted Port remain in the competition, then insisted that the Magpies be established as a separate identity based at Ethelton because they feared the club would be too strong if it was aligned with the AFL team.
It was the Port Adelaide Football Club (est. 1870) that was granted the AFL license, not a separate entity -FACT.

It's time for Port Adelaide to break out the prison bars again

“In fact, Hardwick is a disciple of Clarkson himself, yet both had influences from Mark Williams at Port, who is the son of the SANFL’s most successful coach in history, Fos Williams.”

Thought I should correct you here, Fos Williams, whilst being a brilliant player and champion coach, isn’t the SANFL’s most successful coach in history.
Fos won 9 premierships with Port Adelaide as coach (including 6 as player/coach).
However John Cahill bettered the record of Fos as a coach, guiding Port to 10 SANFL premierships – he was also a 4 time premiership player under Fos before taking on coaching duties.

Port Adelaide would in fact be a good “coaching tree” study – starting with Fos.

How do coaching trees work in the AFL?

“pushing Victorian teams up to hubs in Queensland and WA and getting more games at the Gabba, Metricon Stadium, Optus Stadium and the Adelaide Oval”
There hasn’t been more games at Adelaide Oval. After round 9 there has only been 5 games at AO, whereas in a normal season there would have been 9 games. Gabba and Metricon (thanks to a host of “neutral” matches) and even Giants Stadium have seen more games than AO.
Considering both Adelaide and Port joined West Coast and Fremantle in the Queensland hub to restart the season, I expect to see both SA clubs given the same luxury the WA teams have been enjoying by getting a block of home games at AO in the final 5 round fixture.

Why footy is a shining light in 2020

We don’t need an injury prone small fwd like Fantasia, we already have plenty of far better, and younger, small forwards on our list (half of them haven’t even made their debut yet).
Francis yes, but Fantasia is a big NO

Six talking points from AFL Round 8

Burton played half back to allow Houston to move through the midfield rotations – Sutcliffe primarily played a defensive forward role on Whitfield until he done his hammy

Changes incoming for Port heading into Round 7

Not sure we could go in with all of Dixon, Marshall, Hoff and Georgiadis – possibly could see Bergman or Williams debut, or even Mead

Changes incoming for Port heading into Round 7

Sutcliffe didn’t replace Bonner, Burton did – Sutcliffe was Rocky’s replacement

Changes incoming for Port heading into Round 7

Don’t need to have Kayo or Foxtel to watch every game live for free – just need to do a bit of research on the net to find several free streams of all games. I’ve been doing it for several years

Six talking points from AFL Round 6

Not just the scoreboard that’s heritage listed, the Morton Bay Fig trees are also heritage listed.

An MCG grand final probably can't happen - but where else works?

I would add Ebert, McKenzie and DBJ to the list of those who led from the front

AFL Power Rankings 2020: Round 3

Fantasia burnt that bridge during the trade period by going deep into negotiations only to change his mind.
Port don’t need an injury prone small forward considering the talent they already have in Rozee, Butters, Bergman, Williams (who will be a star) – then they also have players like Farrell and Tobin Cox champing at the bit for a game to show they belong.
Way better options with far more scope for improvement than Orazio

Four burning questions for Port Adelaide ahead of the AFL restart

I honestly don’t think Bassett should be gone – he should never have been moved from the defence assistant role.
In 2018 Bassett was in charge of one of the competitions better performing defensive groups despite it being a fairly young group.
This season he got moved to forward assistant for no other reason than to accommodate Montgomery into the coaching panel.

Which South Australian club coach is under more pressure?

“As for Port Adelaide well it does come across as a team that isn’t flexible no plan B, that’s all coach, so maybe new assistant coaches, new ideas.”

In his 7 years at the helm Hinkley has changed all assistants at least once, with both Schofield and Montgomery new to the coaching panel this year, so that proves it has nothing to do with assistants – it’s all down to the head honcho!!!
In fact, when you look at Hinkley’s first 2 seasons when Port surprised the competition, you will see that he had Alan Richardson (2013) and Phil Walsh (2014) as senior assistants/coaching directors – plus those 2 pre-seasons (and 2015 pre-season) he had the benefit of Burgess as head of high performance/fitness, with pre-season camps in Dubai.
I think the combination of analytical senior assistants, and superior fitness, was responsible for what the playing group produced in Hinkley’s first 2 years at the helm. Since then, Hinkley has been shown up as nothing but a mediocre coach.
And you’re correct when you say he has no plan B – in fact, a review of the football department following the completion of the 2018 season actually found that the coaches were slow to react to on field developments during games – nothing has changed in 2019 unfortunately.

Which South Australian club coach is under more pressure?

I honestly don’t know what the answer is, but the AFL need to apply some creative thinking to encourage more open play and higher scoring games.
Maybe do away with percentages completely. Award a bonus point for a score above 100 (2 bonus points for scores above 130), then the bonus points will decide the ladder rankings

Footy is in a funk

I honestly think Duursma should be rated higher in the RS race than Rozee.
Rozee might have the flashy brilliance, but Duursma has been far more consistent.
Duursma is one of the leading “distance covered” players in the competition in his first year, and he has become an integral member of Port’s structure providing alot of drive from the wing.

Who's leading the AFL flag race after 14 rounds?

“Port Adelaide dominated draft night with Xavier Duursma, Connor Rozee, Zac Butters and Willem Drew and the Geelong win was impressive.”

A little bit of “nit-picking” here, but have to correct you with this comment. Drew wasn’t part of Port’s draft haul that netted Rozee, Butters and Duursma. Drew is actually in his 3rd year on Port’s list, with 2018 completely ruined by a foot injury.

Who's leading the AFL flag race after 14 rounds?

“Even before the first bounce, St Kilda struggled with the heavy impact of overseas travel with several players and coaching coming down with illness.”
Saints can only blame themselves regarding impact of travel by leaving too late – Port left Adelaide late Tuesday afternoon, and in fact had a longer travel time due to having a few hours layover in Melbourne.
As for illness, there are conflicting stories floating around, one claiming several players were ill before leaving Melbourne, the other claiming a group of players and coaches/support staff eating out at an “authentic” Chinese food stall – no matter which is truth, they were both avoidable.
Port right from the first China game have shipped over their own supplies and insist all players and staff on the trip only eat at the hotel they stay in and only the food supplied by the club.
The Saints have another 2 years on their agreement to play in China, they would be better served trying to replicate what Port does to improve their experience over there in 2020-21.
“I don’t think this experiment will last much longer in the AFL.”
Port’s vision for this annual foray in China was for a 10 year minimum commitment, and with the amount of new sponsorship money coming from Chinese businesses (and Australian businesses with strong Chinese business connections), you will find that this will at least last the 10 year journey.
Port and Saints both benefited financially from this game, and because the Saints have agreed to at least another 2 years they will reap even better financial rewards, something Port has demonstrated over the 3 years this game has been played.
What most people either don’t know, or totally ignore, is the fact that AFL programs are available in schools in Shanghai, with there introduction and spread starting a couple of years before the first game was played there in 2017.
China now has weekly AFL games on 3 tv networks, which is largely as a result of the hard work of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

AFL Round 11: Likes and dislikes

Even Marshall for the Saints had a far better game than Kreuzer!!!

AFL Team of the Week: Round 11

Grundy was clearly more influential than Max – the fact he had 3 more contested possessions than Max had total possessions proves that point.

AFL team of the week: Round 9

I think the top 3 recruits who changed clubs during the trade period are Lachie Neale, Gary Rohan and Scott Lycett if basing the comparison solely on their impact within the structure of their new clubs.
We all knew how good Neale is, and he has maintained his ball-winning prowess at the Lions to be a clear Brownlow favourite in my eyes.
Rohan has surprised me I must admit, but after a lacklustre start in round 1 he has definitely found his niche in the Cats structure and taking his game up a notch.
Lycett has relished the opportunity to become the #1 ruckman at Port and is becoming more adept at gathering possession around the ground (I must admit, I was a bit sceptical with Port chasing him with such a lucrative free agency offer, but he has made me eat my words).

'Without a shadow of a doubt': The best new recruit in the AFL

Agree GC won’t take Rankine. If they don’t go with the King twins option and take Lukosious at 2 then they will take Rozee at 3 because those two lads have been close mates for years.
