It was all Shane Warne’s mother’s fault guys

Essendon players are not to blame in drugs scandal

Good article. Very disappointing that 50 years after Jimmy Hill’s reforms and 20 years after Bosman that footballers still don’t have total agency.

A recent one I remember was when Danny Vukovic left for Turkey believing he had a deal there only to be told that the club had signed another international player and he was no longer needed. He should have been able to take them for all they were worth, but instead had to just come back to the A-League (Wellington originally) with his tail between his legs.

Football: more than the one percent

We’re not, but the side has more a-league players, or guys who were recently in the a-league than previous WC squads, which could be a reason for concern. The fact that more A-League players are making the squads these days could be a sign that the league is pulling its weight, or, more likely, that the strength of the national team pool is getting weaker.

Socceroos' low ranking not all gloom

Socceroos' low ranking not all gloom

I don’t think the pessimism would stem from our ranking, it’s coming from people looking at our potential squad. A-League based Socceroos sides have struggled against even minor Asian nations in the past, and we have few players performing at the top level in Europe atm.

In 2006 we had Cahill, Schwarzer, Kewell, Viduka etc. all in the Premier League, Culina at PSV, Grella, Kalac and Bresciano in Italy, Chipperfield at Basel and then some

I suspect the Colombians are pretty confident. They came second in a strong South American qualifying set and boast Radamel Falcao, one of the top strikers in Europe.

It’ll be a huge moment. Sure, his last two or three years have been the BCCI’s version of keeping Mandela on life support, but his decline has probably been necessary to prepare the Indian public for his retirement. It would’ve been disastrous PR if they let him go while his performances still supported his deification.

Sachin Tendulkar to call it a day after 24 years at the top

Time will tell, I guess, but as a glory fan I’m pretty pessimistic. Only real signings are a relatively unknown Brazilian (though these can be gold until they break down in a heap of collapsed calf muscles a la Amaral) and lost our most influential midfielder (Miller). Pretty concerned about Edwards signing both his sons, especially the one who failed to break into THE WORST TEAM IN AUSTRALIA last year, especially when we excised experienced campaigners like Todd Howarth and Nick Ward in the last couple of years. I can’t remember nepotism ever turning out well in Aussie soccer (I’m thinking about Branko Culina’s sacking).

2013-14 A-League season preview: Perth Glory

@Mark. Yeah, unfortunately I wrote this over a week ago, and maybe my main point will get obscured by the AFL360 interview. I should’ve focussed more on the crowd reaction itself, or the distinction between the reaction of fans and the reaction of the media.

Even if he gets cleared legally I still think there are moral issues. Watson should know he subverted the ethics of the game but shows no remorse for it because he was “told it was legal”. Commentators and players/ex-players use phrases like “he’s one of the nicest guys” or “he’s a true champion” when at the end of it all he hasn’t shown any understanding of why what he did was wrong, whether he and Essendon get off on a technicality or not.

If guilty, Watson only has himself to blame
