this is why i couldn't give a stuff about the olympics anymore. for 3.5 years we have our sports that we follow with little interruption in the cycle. come olympics, every idiot and his dog suddenly is an expert on the technical details of diving and it's evolution throughout the 20th century. People trying to justify millions of dollars of AOC funding being directed to minority sports they couldn't give a stuff about about from a medal rather than those that million of people play on saturday mornings. As well as this you have the sheer amount of ridiculous events in a 'premier' competition that either have little athletic ability or where aesthetic quality is judged rather than athletic ability being measured. Gymnastics - voted by judges Shooting -lifting and firing a weapon isn't sport Equestrian - The horse is competiting, not you, voted by judges Diving - voted by judges Synchronised Swimming - it's water based dancing, voted by judges Archery - see guns Sailing - you're steering a boat pushed by the wind. Rhythmic Dancing - go figure As well as this you have other sports were the olympics isn't the main tournament in the sport making a mockery of the event such as basketball, Football and Tennis. The colossal waste of money is absurd as well. I'm living in the uk at the moment and all i hear about the 'lympics' is that London is getting a ugly athletics stadium no one wants and the Olympic commitee is refusing to allow it to be changed into a rectangle because they 'might' win a bid to some athletics championship. Maybe if the olympics went back to it's basics of being a championship event for Swimming and Athletics, i might care again then.

Are the modern Olympics even relevant any more?

Completely agree with this, Rugby League with it's strong heartland and regional support and large dollars backing the code is one of the few games in the country that could actually do this very well. There are many areas that more than deserve to have a professional rugby league team such as Central Coast, Central QLD, Ipswich, Perth, Wollongong (self entity), Adelaide, PNG, Wellington, Auckland 2/Brisbane 3 and Christchurch. Yet the NRL obviously couldn't have all these teams in one division without having some farcical fixture list and thus a 2nd division would suit perfectly to give PROFESSIONAL Rugby League a needed presence in these areas. If budgeted properly with lower crowds and revenue in mind it would provide a clear and sustainable pathway for juniors in these regions to add to the Rugby League community. On the other hand, should an existing club such as Cronulla, Easts or Gold Coast face dire times the 2nd division would provide a means to consolidate and rebuild for future years rather than face complete oblivion like the Bears did.
