I truly believe that the NRL goes out of its way to create the least desirable fixtures schedule possible. They’ve had a 100+ years to figure it out! Or the most likely option is that what Channel Nein says goes. For a billion dollars you’d expect brainless executives would be pulling all the scheduling strings.

How to fix the NRL during the Origin period

Seriosly great idea. I would agree that a NZ origin series might be very interesting. Or maybe NZ Maor All Stars vs Australian Indigenous All-Stars.

Rugby league needs to go all-in for rep weekends

I’d dare say that Milford is definitely the next Queensland five eight.

TURNER: Do the Maroons have a winning State of Origin succession plan?

It pains me to say this; but waiting for the holy trinity (aka Smith, Cronk and Slater) is the only viable strategy for NSW.

TURNER: Do the Maroons have a winning State of Origin succession plan?

I would have picked Inglis at fullback (for NSW).

State of Origin team predictions: Queensland

Off to Super League for Benji.

Marshall denies being Cronulla-bound

T20 cricket should be confined to club vs club matches ie Big Bash, IPL etc, and then Southern and Northern Hemisphere Champions Leagues. T20 at an international level is meaningless.

Australia just didn't care about the World T20

haha

NRL’s half-arsed Heritage Round

thanks, but no thanks.

Can cricket and baseball cross over?

Who could take anything that Graeme Swann says seriously?

Swann: Warner hates to be sledged

A not very extensive Google search came up with this regarding the Charity Shield: “The Charity Shield is for Souths Cares, Wollongong Hospital and St George Hospital”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_League_Charity_Shield_(Australia)

My proposal for a rugby league Relegation Cup

seems legit

Test cricket needs to be played past the twilight zone

Great article. For rugby to survive in this country it needs a national comp to bridge the gap between city based comps (ie Shute Shield) and Super Rugby. It doesn’t need to be an 24 round competition like the NRL, just something simple, like 2 teams each for Sydney and Brisbane, Newcastle, NSW Country, Melbourne, QLD Country, and maybe Perth. As for the idea of more Australian based rugby teams, why dilute the market? Surely we have enough team. Why not include a Pacific islands team based in Fiji or somewhere similar. Surely that would be better for the game than another sporting team based in the Gold Coast.

Super Rugby future going back to roots is good news

As a Tigers fan my heart breaks saying that this isn’t that bad of an idea. Just so long as long as the Perth team keep the Wests Tigers identity and play their Sydney games at either Leichhardt or Campbelltown, and Panthers rebrand as the Western Sydney Panthers. Perth is the ideal next cab off-the-rank franchise wise. The time zone difference is perfect for Super Saturdays on Fox, and as long as they start off reasonable well with a few good signings should build a pretty big fan base. Imagine the state of the NRL right now if Melbourne had not joined! For the long-term benefit of the game the NRL should really be looking at a second NZ team, Gosford and Central Queensland. A second Brisbane team is a terrible idea. Why dilute the Brisbane market?

Goodbye Wests Tigers, hello West Coast Tigers?

This makes total sense to me. You would think that clubs would be tripping over themselves to get access to this area. If I was in charge of Cronulla (or even at a stretch the Roosters who have no junior comp) I would be looking to secure the future of my club by investing in this untapped resource.

It’s amazes me that rugby league has lasted this long given the decades of neglect and outright stupidity of the NSWRL, ARL and now NRL. While Smith is off setting up his flaccid and pointless ideas like nines tournaments and Kangaroos vs Wallabies exhibition matches, the game of Rugby League is dying a painful death in its own backyard.

Alarming truth about league's heartland

this is win win for everyone involved. probably one of the smartest things that the (hopelessly incompetent) NRL have done in years.

How will the touch football partnership affect NRL's style?

How much more boring is Canberra than the western suburbs of Sydney? If it’s so hard to get paid $400k to play footy AND have to live in Canberra maybe they could think about commuting? Dugan, Carney, Milford and Ferguson are just brats who want everything their way, and when they do get it their way they invariably f_ck it up for themselves.

Why do so many players want out of Canberra?

Good article. But I still think that they (Burns and Doolan espy) need more first class experience before being chucked in the deep end. They also need to make a choice between barbie doll cricket (ie IPL) and proper grown up cricket (first class cricket). And never the twain should meet. No warming up for an Ashes series by bowling four overs for $800k in the IPL.

Sheffield Shield offers solution to Australia's middle order problems

1. Rogers (Deserves another chance)
2. Katich (Can’t do any worse than Watson)
3. Khawaja (Really has to step up)
4. Hughes (Very thin ice. Give him this series and if fails that is the end of his test match career)
5. Clarke
6. Warner
7. Haddin (Very thin ice. still better than Wade. I would consider flying Hartley or Paine over)
8. Smith (Not as bad as everyone thinks)
9. Bird
10. Harris
11. Lyon

There should be no room for Watson. He has proven himself a major burden to our team, and does not deserve any more chances. It’s not quite time for a major overhaul. I’d give this bunch the rest of this Ashes to prove themselves. After that I would consider bringing in some experienced players like George Bailey, Adam Voges, Callum Fergusson, Michael Klinger or even David Hussey and some new blood like Steven O’Keefe, Moises Henriques, Glen Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Chadd Sayers etc. And I would make them choose between test match cricket or T20. Just one or another.

My Aussie team for the third Ashes Test

Agree. One swallow doesn’t make it summer.

My Aussie team for the third Ashes Test

+1 to everything.

For the sake of Australian cricket it is imperative that Watson must go immediately. He has shown time and time again that he lacks the maturity and concentration for test match cricket.

Agar is the future of spin bowling and even captain material, but really needs to have a few years of County and Sheffield Shield cricket under his belt.

Headhunting James O'Connor for the NRL

ARU will be dead in 20 years at the rate they are going, and sadly they will drag rugby union in Australia into obscurity.

Super Rugby needs an under-21 competition
