Not this Qlder, I think it shows admirable sensitivity.

TBH (and obviously like a lot of fans) I hadn’t consciously made the connection with the historical significance of the name until now, so I don’t blame them for originally adopting it.

I have no doubt that if a mostly muslim-fanbase team started up in Aus with a name like Al-Qaeda then there would be an outcry.

Crusaders seriously considering name change after admitting current branding "no longer tenable"

Ha Fionn, I can so relate to that!

My only good shots are at the 19th hole.

Seven talking points from Round 1 of the Six Nations

They don’t dent the line because they get the ball static

And it CONSTANTLY amazes and infuriates me! Seriously, I remember being coached in grade four that if you’re taking a hit-up you get the ball on the run.

Will Skelton well worth a World Cup punt

Indeed it bodes well, here’s hoping he not only gets a decent chance with the WBs but that he is also USED effectively by the WBs – that always seems to be a big “IF” these days …

Wallabies and Brumbies lock in Tom Banks on long-term deal

Seriously you’ve gone to a lot of effort to make a really nothing point.

Have the Queensland Reds got their act together?

But not yours, apparently.

Have the Queensland Reds got their act together?

Yes obviously, what’s your point?

Have the Queensland Reds got their act together?

Rhys if you’re going to continue with the line that no one is allowed to be even slightly objective about Thorn it’s going to get a bit sad looking.

He’s been head coach for a very brief period, taking over when a large number of the players were already contracted.

Some current Reds players will react well to Thorn’s style, some won’t. Some others might come to Qld for it, some will avoid it. That simply and clearly was my point.

Who outside the team would know they if mostly like it? The fact that they haven’t left in droves doesn’t prove anything.

Have the Queensland Reds got their act together?

Good morning and happy Boxing Day, Andrew.

It’s tough to predict the Reds’ future. Having the likes of Ryan and Crapper around certainly can’t hurt, but they are on the periphery – it’s pretty much down to Thorn to set the tone and steer the course.

Thorn’s ‘my way or the highway’ approach can cut both ways – some good players will chose the highway. Adults are entitled to be treated as such. It worked for Bennett, but when he started with the Broncos he already had proven coaching experience and a pretty handy list too. And that’s the thing with Bennett’s legacy – did he make his players’ success or did they make his? Impossible to say for sure.

Hegarty could end up being a key signing, but Reds are still short of a good 10 (if he plays 15) or 15 (the other way around)

Have the Queensland Reds got their act together?

Yes, while the only certainty is that players head o/s for all sorts of reasons, the lure of a WB jersey would have to be a good incentive to stay.

Rory Arnold set to join Toulouse in 2020

And to you too Fionn!

Here’s hoping for a better 2019 for all us Aus rugby fans. The only way is up, I guess …

Rory Arnold set to join Toulouse in 2020

I think we need to be a little more precise and realistic about why players stay in Aus go overseas. It’s surely a variety of reasons. I’m no Cheika fan but at the moment he seems to be responsible for global warming too.

Perese went to the NRL and it seemed the motivation was more that he wanted a code switch.

None of the following were likely to get even a decent Reds contract extension when they left, certainly none were a likely long term WB. If anything, they freed up a place for a good younger player to get a contract:

Jake Mcintyre
Jake Schatz
Eto Nabuli
Nick Frisby
Anthony Faingaa
Saia Faingaa
Ed Quirk

Cheika survives the axe as Rugby AU bring in Scott Johnson as director of rugby

And maybe that’s exactly how clear they like it to be.

I hate to be the guy that says things like that; generally I like to stay out of the way and let people get on with their jobs … but sheesh I’m rapidly losing faith …

Cheika survives the axe as Rugby AU bring in Scott Johnson as director of rugby

Indeed. What “off field” matters are not already being overseen by someone? Sounds like another “high performance” manager.

BTW is Rod Kafer still appointed to something? What’s he doing?

Yes jeznez, I’m a little confused by the nature of the relationship, hence the inverted commas around the word.

What if anything is it that a director of rugby directs the head coach to do? I can understand there being a co-selector, even a co-selector with a veto power perhaps. I can only imagine he could offer coaching and related advice that Cheika is free to regard or disregard as he wishes. At the moment we’re told that Cheika ‘reports’ to him. Doesn’t he already report to Castle et al?

Can’t see Cheika being the type to take ‘advice’ from above. Perhaps he might from someone he perceives to be of particularly high stature and achievements. I don’t think that’s Johnson, though. Hope I’m wrong.

I was wondering this recently – could Daugunu play 15? Has pace, a good tackle and as a former soccer goalie is used to assessing play from the back. Might be worth a wee punt on it.

I’m also a big Duncan P fan and would prefer him to play 12 or 10.

Reds should go hard for Giteau

Probably, but at Bennett’s last press conference that was definitely a sh.t eating grin.

Who would you rather: Andrew Fifita or David Klemmer?

Morning Nick.

The Wallabies of the last season or so have looked as if they were forever playing the first game of the season – patches of great promise but with equal measures of rust and puffing.

Pretty sure you’ve identified the reason.

Why the answers for Australian rugby are blowin’ in the wind

Great piece, JS, looking forward to many more.

Has running rugby had its day?

You’re right, Ruckin. Given it was a new coach and some unexpected dramas (Slips and Hunt), I’m prepared to give another year to show substantial improvement. If we’re not significantly better then it’s going to hard to give Thorn a pass mark. (Similarly I haven’t bothered to finish watching the recording of the Wallabies last effort …)

I’m sorry Reds. But it’s not me, it’s you

Great piece thanks Evan!

And is that a Leo Sayer avatar? Two thumbs up. I hear the Reds singing “when I need love ….” 😉

Yep I was pretty sad about last year too.

I think the Reds’ list, on paper, looks very solid, with some great talent coming through (… but I said the same thing last year …).

Reds are light-on for a quality 7, but otherwise there are not too many weaknesses in the squad.

The defence was shambolic at times, but for me it was the ‘nothing’ attack that was hardest to watch. Stewart improved during the NRC, but of course all 10s SHOULD look better in that try-fest. I don’t expect any Quade-like flashes of brilliance from him, but if he can take on the defence a little more, rather than his usual 2-steps-sideways-and-shovel distribution, it will greatly assist. Otherwise he’s a fearless defender and potentially a decent game manager – at least seems to have a reasonably cool head on him. There are surely plenty of tries in a backline with Duncan P, Samu, Petaia and Daugunu.

Will be interested to see a bit of our new flyhalf signing, Matt McGahan (anyone see him playing with the Auckland Blues?). Former NZ Schoolboys and Melbourne Storm U.20s (NRL) so he must have something to offer – the Strom would not have wasted their time on the typically dreary 10s that Aust rugby is awash with. He’s also the son of Hugh, one of the toughest Kiwi league players that I can recall, and that’s saying something, so my guess is he knows how to tackle!

I reckon it’s going to be a bust-out year for Angus Scott-Young, too.

I’m sorry Reds. But it’s not me, it’s you

Maybe “Pass Catch and KISS” would work?
