Firstly thanks for the ‘above average’ compliment. As an Adelaide resident it’s difficult to find a balanced view of Port Adelaide in the media. I try not to read the articles so I’m not swayed by their opinions. I count the radio commentators as I listen to fiveaa a lot. There is glee in the voice of Chris McDermott and Steven Roe when they talk about Port Adelaide under performing. In the first weeks of the season the message was consistently that the opposition was unworthy and therefore the only reason they won. Honestly the reporting of AFL in SA is massively crow centric. In my opinion (hence writing opinion pieces) there is more to PAFC than is being reported. I know they aren’t the best side in the AFL but I believe they deserve more positive reporting. I take exception to the idea that Port Adelaide a) had finals dreams and b) that dream is in tatters. It was another article written by an ex crows player. No conspiracy, just trying to even the ledger.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will Port Adelaide
In the context of this article there is a problem with umpires being undermined publicly. I’m not for one secon suggesting they have it worse than sweat shop workers. Umpires decisions have no more or less impact on the game than those of the players, they are an easier target though. If their boss apologises on their behalf and says they were wrong it has a knock on effect through all levels of the game and gives validation to arguing with an umpire. Not a good look on umpire appreciation round. Ray didn’t make a bad decision on purpose. He thought it was the right one.
Umpires undermined and unappreciated
In my opinion Scott Thompson pushes the hawthorn player out of the marking contest. The umpire called it as he saw it. The 50 was for Sam Jacobs encroaching on the protected area. So as a counterpoint to your argument, the momentum was stopped by firstly Thompson pushing in the marking contest and then lazy running by Jacobs.
Umpires undermined and unappreciated
James, it is highly unlikely that the northern end of AO will change. The scoreboard and Morton Bay Fig trees would have to be removed and there are few in Adelaide that would allow that.
Personally I believe the open northern end, hill and trees give AO character which is great as we move away from the cake tin design of the 70’s and 80’s
AFL must return to boutique stadiums
You aren’t going to let the membership thing go are you? Memberships vs. Attendance is a false equivalency.
AFL must return to boutique stadiums
I think the Geelong model is a perfect example that should be looked at seriously by Bulldogs and North Melbourne.
AFL must return to boutique stadiums
It would be up to the club to find a realistic and feasible business model. It can be done.
AFL must return to boutique stadiums
A move from West Lakes had to happen, Adelaide Oval will be a better venue as far as traffic infrastructure goes and being close to the CBD is perfect. My main point is that even though the AFL provides stadiums there is no accountability at a club level. NFL and EPL clubs do it by good business planning. Stadium sponsorship etc
AFL must return to boutique stadiums
Melbourne is a club that would benefit from a smaller stadium, but financially they are not great, so theres a conundrum!
AFL must return to boutique stadiums
The All Blacks aren’t a franchise. It’s a national rep side. An AFL team in NZ yes, maybe. Creating global interest in a sport that is played by two countries once a year. Probably not. Maybe in 1,000 years. Development is fast within a code. You are talking about 2 opposing ideas and trying to meld them together. Also they will never be called the All Blacks.
International Rules: a new frontier for the All Blacks?

It’s an interesting thought exercise but will probably never eventuate to anything more. The all blacks and the heritage means much more to the Kiwis than a non New Zealander will ever understand. A new sport won’t further the cause of the All Blacks at all, add to that there is no need to expand ‘the brand’. It is an Australian made idea that sports need promoting to the level of AFL. As for international rules it is a Frankenstein game already. Nobody grows up wanting to represent their country in that game. Until there is world wide competition for AFL then it is a boutique one nation sport. This idea is pure fantasy.
International Rules: a new frontier for the All Blacks?
Man U won the league that year. To suggest that it is impossible for barca to beat Bayern 4-0 is wrong. Anything is possible. To suggest that one big defeat signifies the end of barca as a footballing power is disengenuous. The reason that football is the beautiful game is that is can change in a heartbeat. It will be difficult but not beyond the realms of possibility. Write Barcelona off at your peril.
Could this be the end of Barcelona?
Now the question is, does Barcelona deserve its popular image as the best team in the world?
A: Yes.
Do I believe that they can beat Bayern by At least 4? Yes.
Could this be the end of Barcelona?
Are you mad? Barcelona were beaten in one game and you’re calling it the end? Newcastle beat Manchester United 5-0 in 1996 and by your assertion that should have been the end of a team. Three years later they won an historic treble.
Could this be the end of Barcelona?
I agree that the game at the MCG is a spectacle. I also think that it’s time the tradition grew. http://www.theroar.com.au/2013/04/25/anzac-day-a-growing-tradition/
ANZAC spirit shines at the footy
First game of the Kevin Sheedy version of the Anzac Day game. I say that in the article.
AFL on ANZAC Day: a growing tradition
It would appear that it’s Collingwood that doesn’t like it. 😉
Port in prison bars: Looking back to go forward
I don’t mind the magpies issue. I think it’s strange that one club can dictate to another over their home playing jumper.
FYI the SA Rugby team are the Black Falcons.
Port in prison bars: Looking back to go forward
I agree regarding the commercialisation of sport. I wrote about it during the tennis. Nicknames shouldn’t be given they should be organic. Collingwood fans bang on about their tradition and pay Port Adelaide’s no heed at all.
Port in prison bars: Looking back to go forward
Some do, I even saw a half and half jumper at the clash game.
Port in prison bars: Looking back to go forward
Phelpsy,
I admire your passion. However you didn’t address the questions. Why does it matter if Port Adelaide wear their traditional jumper in heritage rounds/against other clubs. I suppose to prevent serious dummy spitting Port could change the guernsey every time they played Collingwood.
Port in prison bars: Looking back to go forward
The game on Wednesday was a pre-season friendly. The actual football was poor, Liverpool made 10 changes at once, which should be a pointer to how seriously this game was taken. The importance of the occasion was about the bringing together of Liverpool fans from all over Australia. Liverpool fans made a small part of Melbourne theirs on Wednesday night.
