This really is NZ’s super rugby title to lose.
I really do hope the Force and Reds make efforts to sort themselves out for next year, hire some good coaches and build a new squad to develop in 2017.

Super Rugby 2016 Power Poll 2: Hopes and dreams

6. Fardy 7. Pocock 8. Timani (yes he plays second row but I think he is more of an 8)

Playing both Pocock and Hooper is more naive than clever

The problem for me was not the travel to homebush, it was the fact that homebush is an aweful stadium with terrible food, expensive beer and horrible seating for a rectangular field based sport. It also has no atmosphere as it is too big for anything but 60,000+ crowds.

Tearing down the SFS is a golden opportunity for NSW Waratahs to live up to their name

Shane D,
Couldn’t agree more. What NZ does extremely well is develop players and identify talent. This includes both players and coaches. This is why NZ coaches can be found all around the world coach many national, provincial and club teams. They have the best development pathways in the world.

Australia deserves five Super Rugby teams

Phaeton,
“better athletes than Aussies” – That is exceptional. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and hope you do not drop screamers like that on a daily basis.

Australia deserves five Super Rugby teams

The Waratahs team has more problems than just Gibson. I am unsure if he is the main problem or not but right now he does not appear to be the solution and I think the Waratahs can not afford to look so terrible even in a rebuilding year. The only building being done is with Jed Holloway which is great but when they have lost over 10+ first or second choice players, 1 shining light is not enough.

Waratahs wilting under Gibson

Sheek,
I forgot to include, I do love your article. Some very thought provoking stuff and well written. I too dislike the fair weather fans who only want to see their team win but that appears to be human nature.

The Scots played amazing rugby and if they did win that game, I would not sad to see my tea knocked out but more thrilled for rugby as a sport. The more teams that can win the cup, the stronger the sport is.

I feel for the Scotish supporters, to come so close and have it snatch away must be agnosing, I wish them the best and hope to see them in the semi final’s in Japan.

My main problem with this whole situation is World Rugby, how dare they hang Craig Joubert out to dry, the game is over and it has no baring on what will happen in the future. All they have done is tarnished this man’s reputation because of a 50/50 call.

Winning the World Cup would be bittersweet for Australians

Sheek,
I see your points about Australia’s perceived ill gotten gains but I for one do not agree with you and I am not saying that because I am only interested in watching my team win.
1. At worst the decision was a 50/50. In real time it looked like a penalty and CJ is only human. It was by no measure a terrible call.
2. As was pointed out by world rugby, CJ had no option to go to the TMO. He could only go by his memory from the angle he saw and it looked like a penalty.
3. We as spectators want the sport refed by a human, not a machine and not by every decision being sent for review to the TMO, this means by definition we want to see a human let some minor things go for the good of the game and make the 50/50’s to increase the speed of the game. This is a natural result of our desire as stakeholders to want human referees.
4. To take one penalty in isolation of the rest of the game is narrow minded at best.
5. The Scots were under pressure in the last 5 minutes and were making allot of errors, They lost the kick off, lost the lineout and were panicking, with 2 minutes on the clock(not the end of the game mind you, this is not football) their defence was in all sorts of trouble.
6. To remove the fact that Australia had a scrum feed inside the Scots half as the alternative to the penalty is naive. Not to mention the Wallabies scrum had looked considerably stronger than the Scots since the finishers came on. The simple fact is no one knows what would have happened but the advantage was clearly with the Wallabies and this cannot be understated.
7. The Wallabies did not make the decision, they did not cheat to get to that point, all they did is follow the ref’s ruling. To tar and feather their achievements because of one small decision is ludicrous.
8. The Wallabies scored 5 tries to 3, this shows to me which team played better rugby.

What your article is implying is not only did CJ rob the Scottish of victory but he is also robbing Australia of the opportunity to be legitimate champions. I simply cannot agree with that.

Winning the World Cup would be bittersweet for Australians

That is bang on. The Wallabies scored 5 tries to 3. The last of their tries was a complete brain explosion by Slipper. Sure this can’t be taken away from the Scots as they did not force him to throw that terrible pass but that luck kept them in the game. They hardly scored that try through enterprising rugby.

Winning the World Cup would be bittersweet for Australians

+1

Winning the World Cup would be bittersweet for Australians

Because Wales have done so well against Australia in the recent past? What is it now, 10 or 11 straight losses to Australia who are arguably in the best form they have been in for 10 years.

How the Wallabies can win the Rugby World Cup

Taqele has potential but his positional play, kicking and ability to take the high ball are not up to international standard, he should improve on those skills with quality coaching but he is not ready for a world cup just yet.

On the subject of speed, Andrew Kellaway was killing at the under 20’s world cup and in the NRC last year, he seems to have plenty of speed and some decent footwork. Not sure how he is doing this year.

Michael Cheika's need for size, not speed

I like the shaking hands part.
They would also have a tunnel for the other team after the game.

Luke Godwin? is that typo for Kyle or is that another player that has flown under my radar?

I like Inman, if he combined with TK it could be a very imposing centre combination.

Super Rugby grand final preview from a nervous Waratahs fan

Why isn’t Gill in the Reds starting side anymore?

Waratahs smash fumbling Reds

All this doom and gloom talk about the Tahs is amazing. Last night Cheika has testing out a few players and new strategies, consider the following.

1. The Tahs had allot of second line players for most of the match. Talu, backup THP, Lance, Mc Kibbin, Crawford, large Island winger.
2. A few players played large chunks of they game out of their preferred positions, Phipps on the wing, Lance at fullback
3. everyone knew going into the game that without Dennis and with Skelton that the line out would be weaker, this isn’t a revelation, it is a known fact. This is fixed by playing Douglas, Hoiles, JackPot and Palu at the same time. Also, don’t take anything away from the Reds, they have a great lineout, this is also a fact.

Taking those three factors into consideration, the Waratahs achieved the following.
1.They won in QLD with a bonus point.
2. Lowest score for the Reds ever at Suncorp
3. Highest margin in a Waratahs v Reds game and this includes the dark days under Eddie Jones.
4. Kept the Reds try less in a home game.

I think the Tahs showed amazing depth in the squad and power in their game. Phipps scored a try as a winger, that is how good the team played.

Waratahs smash fumbling Reds

Brilliant article as usual Scott. Thank you.

Regarding the passing, do you think this is a symptom of speed the Waratahs are playing at?
Are their teams in super rugby who are as fast and more accurate?
Do you think the Waratahs can improve this aspect of their game by the semi finals?

I agree that if it is possible to keep the speed and improve the accuracy they would become extremely hard to stop.

3D Analysis: Waratahs show structure in attack creates opportunities

Douglas came off at half time. Skelton was warming up with 8 to go in the first half which makes me think Douglas was injured some time late in the first half. Douglas looked to be in a little bit of pain when the camera went to him sitting on the bench in the second half. I hope it is not serious.

Super Rugby Round 18: Aussie team of the week

Smith got special dispensation from his Japanese club so play for the Brumbies and Wallabies, Not from the ARU. The ARU regulations only specify you must be contracted with an Australian Super Rugby team in the year to play for the Wallabies. Timani appear around Feb / March and walked straight into the Wallabies.

Nick Cummins leaves Western Force and Aussie Rugby

I hope this isn’t true, I like Cummins as a player and really like what he brings to the Wallabies.

Nick Cummins leaves Western Force and Aussie Rugby

PeterK, I’m pretty sure they can miss a few weeks and play for the Wallabies, all they need is to be signed to an Australian super rugby team. Timani and Smith recently played in Japan, missed the first few weeks or months of the comp and still played for Australia in the June internationals.
