Clearly the Roar has a preference for cyber-bullying rather than cogent, civilised debate.

At least I understand that now, better late then never.

It's time for unity behind our World Cup bid

From now on, if anyone tries to accuse me of being someone else, I will report it to the moderators.

Personally, it’s a way of playing the man rather than the ball – it’s a weak way to avoid a point well made.

To my eyes at least, it’s a sign of weakness.

So this warning is for everyone’s benefit – refer to me by any name other than my tag, and I will report it to the moderators for removal.

I’ve actually had quite enough of it.

IN fairness, the A-League and Melbourne Victory did it (in fact, I think the winner even got a game, not sure).

There may even have been two series.

Hysterical?

Who used it?

Not me.

Say straight out what you mean – and then let’s have the moderators sort it out – I’m all in favour of it.

It's time for unity behind our World Cup bid

Very true.

I think the bid is safe because a certain key person is a major donour to both parties.

Why do you keep mentioning “peak oil” – I’ve never once, in my whole life, written anything that mentioned “peak oil”.

Agree with the top two posts.

I caught the last five minutes of the game, and saw the Melbourne player handball to an umpire in the middle of the park at a very crucial point (think the Western Bulldogs were still behind).

I didn’t really understand what was going on until they explained the various things they were publicising – but it was instantly noticeable that the umpire’s attire closely resembled Melbourne’s jersey.

Great cause, but bad call by the AFL

I think a total of 50,000 across two League games in Melbourne is a decent enough effort, certainly something to build on.

League still pulling crowds in Melbourne

I read this in the UK Telegraph the other day:

Forgetmenot is quite rightly making the case for correct usage within Australia.

What’s more, there is a definite need to avoid ambiguity, especially with the Cricket World Cup on the horizon.

I’m not sure why people have a problem with anyone demanding clarity of expression.

It's time for unity behind our World Cup bid

Many Australians have a very keen interest in the League, Union and Cricket World Cups, so I think Forgetmenot makes a good point, that the authorites should use Soccer World Cup when talking about the event within Australia.

Punter
are you referring to me or JamesP?

I’m not the least bit Italian, I’m not sure where you got that info from.

I’m unaware of any Italian link in my family tree.

but I am a Socceroos fan, and I’m very happy to be in the running to host the WC (although I don’t honestly believe we have much of a chance)

That’s an amazing clip captain, with no shortage of pathos.

Seeing the dusty field, the burned out wreck in the foreground, the old footies that look like they have taken a bit of a pounding, well, what can one say.

All power to the Nauruans.

mahony

You have some very strange concepts mixed up there. On the one hand the AFL appears to have the capacity to do something treacherous (I’m not really sure what), but on the other you say: “most of all – small”.

Whatever you are trying to convey, it’s unclear – but if you wish to clarify – we’re all ears!

Towser
with respect, and I know you as much about this sort of stuff as the rest of us combined, but can you honestly imagine FIFA being concerned about countries “sretching” themselves?

Can anyone imagine Jack Warner worrying about anyone stretching themselves?

South Africa has basically stretched itself beyond repair, and Brazil is about to do the same.

I can’t second guess what the AFL is up to, but I view it this way.

It’s a numbers game.

About 1,600 put their name in the draft, and about 80 are selected, about 1 in 20.

That’s probably not a high enough ratio at the elite level of professional sport.

That ratio needs to double – but where are the numbers coming from?

I also look at the success of Jimmy Stynes 20 years ago.

Since then we’ve only had Tadgh Kenneally come close to matching him.

Meaning?

Meaning you need to double, triple, quadruple your scouting efforts in a place like Ireland if you want five or six Irish guns coming through per decade, rather than one.

It’s a numbers game.

It’s interesting that we should mention Craig Johnston. Despite never having played for his country, he probably achieved as much as any Australian player before and after him: scored in a winning FA Cup team, and would have been part of at least one Championship winning side.

Interestingly, despite having achieved so much, he is at the exact opposite end of Foster in terms of how he views the game.

He was actually quite a humble bloke, and readily admitted that he did not possess the skill of blokes raised on the game in countries where the game is a religion, and he was happy to put his key strength down as determination.

Something that Fos would discard entirely as a necessary attribute to succeed at the professional level.

Now are people starting to understand our dismal failure and implosion in 1997?

Foz's sniping at other codes is pointless

ah yes – that makes more sense – i did the post below just as you were putting this up.

Yes – I believe mediocrity is not too harsh a word.

Foz's sniping at other codes is pointless

Craig Foster played for a great Liverpool team?

Foz's sniping at other codes is pointless

Another World Cup on the horizon.

Another failure of Asian teams to get past the first round.

How do you rate 'World Football News?'

He’d be worth his weight in leaf litter on an Autumn day.

League players are just plain greedy

Let’s face it – Australians are the only ones who do watch it.

So what – maybe Australians are more discerning?

Where are the quality local rugby shows?

I still don’t understand why you are accusing him of hypocrisy??

What’s the big deal about that one theory? Why does it matter so much, and why is it hypocrytical to quote it??

Foz's sniping at other codes is pointless

It’s crazy that any Australian should criticise either endeavour.

There are a zillion sports played all around the world, some of them are played in more than a few countries, so what.

International AFL takes another step forward

Let us all agree that it’s a good thing that there’s someone out there planting trees.

There is someone out there planting trees….isn’t there??
