He wasn’t good enough to hit them!

Gritty Rory Burns ton grinds down Australia

Burns dug in and did the job for his team. Reminiscent of Chris Rogers in previous Ashes series. Good off the pads and plenty of squirts behind point.

Got to have him driving in order to nick him off on Day 3.

Gritty Rory Burns ton grinds down Australia

A positive from the series is what Australia has found out about some of its squad. Big ticks to Richardson, Handscomb and Marsh, while the stocks of Finch, Siddle, Carey and Stoinis have lowered.
The top of the order needs to change. Finch is way down on form and confidence and needs some time away from international cricket. To me, he’s technically flawed (plays too leg side and is streaky) and his golden run in the team where he was scoring hundreds at what is now a slowish s/r of 90 or so is over. I’d still keep him around the squad for the WC but he may not be in my 11.
Carey is a good prospect but the WC may be a year or two too early for him. Striking at 76, there’s no impact. Why not give Handscomb the gloves for the India series?
Opening the innings, Short needs a prolonged chance. Agar should be in at 7 and I wouldn’t be against giving Faulkner (although he struggles against India – I’d have him in against any team but them) and Bailey another chance. Faulkner lengthens the order at 8 and Bailey can move through the gears when he bats – he knows how to craft an innings. Here would be my squad for the India series with an eye on the WC:
1. Khawaja (more than likely warming the seat for Warner)
2. Short
3. S Marsh
4. Handscomb (wk)
5. Maxwell
6. Bailey
7. Agar
8. Cummins
9. Richardson
10. Starc
11. Zampa
Res: Finch, M Marsh, Carey, Behrendorff, J Faulkner.
To me, the pace bowling is a bit the same and you need a Faulkner or Neser there to mix it up.

Sloppy Australia hand India 2-1 series win

The Test attack lacks variety. When Starc is erratic, there is a distinct sameness to the pace bowling. The best bowling attacks have variety.
Hazlewood and Starc have been below their best for some time. Cummins and Hazlewood bowl short of a length outside off, Starc looks for a hooping inswinger that he can rarely nail. Then switching to short stuff for overs on end. Granted, they haven’t had huge totals too defend but they don’t seem to get much movement in the air or from the deck. These guys need to be put on notice.
Given good performers in the Shield a chance is overdue. Tremain, J Richardson and a swing/seam bowler like Worrall or Copeland should be around the squad. Dropping or resting one or both of Starc and Hazelwood (maybe giving them only one test each vs SL) should happen.

Chris Tremain and Jhye Richardson must play Sri Lanka Tests

It’s a shame. He adds much needed variety with his change ups. Plus he has ability with the bat. From memory, his bowling was still valuable apart from when he was playing India.
Australia need a ‘one day specialist ‘ bowler; Tye seems to have that role and his performances haven’t been great.

Smith and Warner's returns can help Australia win the World Cup

1. Warner
2. Khawaja
3. Finch
4. Smith
5. Maxwell
6. Carey (wk)
7. Stoinis
8. Agar
9. Faulkner
10. Cummins
11. Starc

Res: S Marsh, Lynn, M Marsh, Hazelwood, Zampa

I wonder if Marsh will also be given 2 games (line Handscomb) if his performances are as underwhelming?

Marsh in, Handscomb out of Boxing Day Test

Cummins doesn’t get first crack at the tail either. Misses the chance to rack up some gimme wickets.

Indian quicks leave Australia battered and bruised

True. He does go hard at the ball and this sees him nick off regularly.
He also doesn’t rotate the strike. This sees him get worked over by the opposition. He has a few flaws as a batsman; his dawdling starts to an innings hasn’t been discussed too often so I thought I’d bring it up.

Composed Head upstages impatient teammates

With only Pujara and Head prospering so far you can’t be too hard on either sides batsmen. It’ll be interesting to see how both teams go about their second innings. It was great to see Head knuckle down yesterday. I am one of the many who has concerns over his skittishness outside off stump. From all reports he was disciplined yesterday and managed to reap the rewards late in the day. There is plenty of upside to Head so hopefully he can go on and get Aus up to India’s first innings.
One of the many problems with Shaun Marsh is his lack of intent early in an innings. I’ve always found he bats himself into a bit of a hole. Then when a loose ball comes he’s not in the mindset to hammer it. Looking for singles and being positive early on would help. He’s 35 now and that’s not going to change. Granted his form in domestic cricket has been great but it’s doubtful that either he or Finch will make consistent contributions over the course of the series. Both have limitations: Marsh with his mentality and Finch with his technique (he’s all eye).
If Australia can keep a 4th innings chase to under 250 they are in with a chance!

As a Dogs fan I’m disappointed. Love Klemmer. Despite his flaws (slow play the balls, lack of punish in defence and lack of an offload) he’s a metre – eater and so, so consistent.
Napa is the epitome of inconsistent. Only upside Napa possesses is his aggression (which needs to be checked). He’s not worth big money and he’s nowhere near the best middle forward at the Roosters. Would much rather take Taukeiaho or Liu.

Hopefully he’ll improve under Pay’s tutelage.

Napa, Klemmer find new homes in prop swap

Stoinis will need to keep bowling well as it’s more than likely that his great batting record will continue to decline (as will Head’s). Obviously our batting personnel and order needs to be revised and will change when the bans are up (and hopefully Khawaja is given a prolonged go).

I’d actually consider only playing 2 of the big three pace men. Especially if Stoinis is bowling well.
A bottom five consisting of
7. Marsh
8. Stoinis
9. Cummins
10. Zampa
11. Hazelwood

Depending on conditions and the whims of the selectors, having Starc, Agar and possibly Faulkner to choose from as well as part of the WC Squad would make for a pretty formidable squad. If Starc is bowling well he’s a lock for the 11.

Australia finally end ODI losing streak

Dogs do look sharper in attack without Marshall King.

if he is left handed and uses wrist spin then the ball turning into a right hand bat is still a leg break. No-one calls the balls’ Warnie turned into the pads of Left Hand bats “off breaks”.
