How much does the AFL get for their matches in Canberra? It’s a lot more than 1 mil, and the crowds aren’t better than the Raiders crowds.

Sorry Blacktown, you didn't deserve this

At a cost that probably could have built a 25K stadium for them at Blacktown at the very site they are running away from. As well there is plenty of areas they could have had a nice facility for training during the summer as well. It’s just not as nice an area.

Sorry Blacktown, you didn't deserve this

Hmm, the Pokies game is changing, NSW Govt tax rate on Pokies is much higher than what Victoria’s is, which has meant that clubs relying on Pokie cash is finishing up. It’s why clubs are pushing memberships and the like much more.

The AFL may be looking to cut ties with that part of things, but some clubs are fighting that, Brisbane Lions are one good example. There is just too much easy money to be made.

I wonder if you guys will pass up on sports betting money as well? That’s dirty money as well isn’t it?

GWS Giants must fix the identity crisis

Can’t they just train in Wagga in the Summer? It’s not like the council wouldn’t pay them? Or is the 100K for a hit and run mission for a couple of weeks. Not bad money if you can get it.

Sorry Blacktown, you didn't deserve this

“Both teams service large geographical areas of Sydney that no other NRL team touches.”

Manly I believe this statement to be true, especially since the Bears don’t exist, and I think if they got themselves a nice 25K stadium, it would propel them to get higher crowds.

Cronulla on the other hand are surrounded by St George-Illawarra. I believe there area could be serviced just as well by the Dragons, and Kogarah is not that hard to get to from the Shire.

Expansion means you can't always preach to the converted

I used to love the Pansonic Cup, and when Illawarra, then bottom of the table made the final, they were a team that everybody got behind (except for Brisbane supporters of course!). I would love to see this return. Drop Monday night footy, have Wednesday night knockout footy instead.

BROWNIE: How coaching differs in England and Australia

Whats done is done. File it away and focus on how to win the next match. Hopefully Carney can use that experience in the first match to ensure that he performs better next match. He is the key if NSW are to beat QLD in Origin 2.

Treacherous officials hand another Origin match to Maroons

If the NRL gets a big payday, then I wouldn’t have a problem with that. It’s a great way to give back to the country area’s. And as I pointed out. I am sure many a local govt would be more than happy to offet the cost in some way to get teams coming to the town. Just even the out of town teams and officials having to stay at local motels etc, over the year would ensure it was a worthwhile exercise.

ARL Commission supports City-Country

There are better ways to achieve the same result though than the one off hit and run we currently seeing which really only services one country town each year. We could have similar to the Queensland Cup, the NSW Cup teams playing from regional areas, with each NSW RL attached to that. Not only does it help the game in the area by bringing better quality matches and players (and the odd first grader who could visit schools etc in the area to help promote goodwill), it also brings more money into those area’s, which will see the locals get behind it even more.

Not to mention that City vs Country is limited to NSW players as well. So there is no benefit to Queensland country league, and interest overall in this clash will always be very limited due to how the team is assembled. The step after that would be giving the NSW Cup broadcast rights for free to the ABC or SBS (or whoever will broadcast it). This would then also give these towns a little more exposure. All plus’s in my book.

You only have to look at clubs like the Roosters currently whose catchment area consists of about 4 RL clubs, to know that the current system is defunct. We see the situation the other day that GWS was paid $100K for them to bring there preseason program to Wagga, the Raiders were up in arms, but the Raiders could rather than have Mt Pritchard in SYDNEY as there NSW Cup team, support Wagga and have the feeder club located there. I think that Wagga would be much more liable to pony up cash to support a club that plays there week in week out.

In conclusion, when I was younger, City vs Country was relevant as it did consists of the odd country player who did not play in the NSWRL at the time, but it’s been a long time since someone fit that description. So it’s had it’s day, let’s take a holistic approach in how to achieve the same result, but in a better manner. One that gives back to the country areas all year.

NSW are down 12-4 at half time. Are your boys ready to take over?

Make this the last Origin in Melbourne

Just to point out, NSW vs QLD has been happening forever. The difference was previously it consistent of the best players running around in the NSWRL vs the best in the QRL. It was changed 1 year after the AFL went with the State of Origin type call up.

THe other difference is that ours State of Origin is a success, while yours is just a memory.

Make this the last Origin in Melbourne

That’s two men! Gallen didn’t play last week and you won. So it’s already proved your not a one man team. Nothing to prove tonight.

I am still praying that Hodgkinson gets a run tonight, the team looks so much better with him running things.

I suppose you have to look at it from another perspective. What value does the town gain from paying $100K each year to have the Giants train there in the offseason? The NRL takes there trial matches there every year, which they don’t ask for money just to attend, and thus any money raised after costs goes to the town, and the local comp.

As a rate payer, I would prefer the money to be spent on sporting grounds, or other avenues that get people coming to the town tourism wise (Fund some sort of museum or a wildlife park), than give a handout to an AFL team that already generates millions each year.

Could an AFL player make it in the NRL?

Sheens and the Tigers have done their time. A fresh approach at the club is what the Tigers need. Jason Taylor would be great.

Sheens still searches for Tigers NRL spine

Imagine that you could possible have a world cup every year as well on a 4 year cycle

1st year – Union 15 a side
2nd Year – 7’s world cup
3rd Year Rugby League 13 a side
4th year Rugby League 9’s

More co-operation between the two codes could only be a good thing.

Would love to see Rugby League 9’s comps happening in the summer as a mini series played over 8 weeks (Similar to the IRB Seven’s comp currently).

League and Union: we should embrace the different codes

I think they can push for 4-5th spot. Especially as Origin doesn’t affect them. Just a little consistency is all they need. They have shown they have the game, but can they produce it every week.

Five things we learned from round 10

In that you ignore a system that works well in America, the conference system, which allows a lot of teams to be involved without the financial issue of promotion/relegation.

I think the NRL could sustain at least 20 clubs (with NZ providing 2 at least) in this sort of setup.

Each team in a 20 team comp would pay there division (Would you go divisions of 4 or 5? I think divisions of 4 is better).

With a 4 team division, play everyone in your division twice for 6 games, and everyone else once for 16 games. 22 game season.
WIth a 5 team division, play everyone in your division twice for 8 games, and everyone else once for 15 games,. 23 game season.

I am sure if team numbers increased over 20, it wouldn’t be that hard to find a conference system that still worked. Best thing about a conference system, is that the main thing is winning your conference to qualify for the semi’s, which means it’s a lot easier to get to the semi’s and see new teams there each season, and next best records would get wildcard spots.

Could relegation work in an expanded NRL competition?

A lot, by this you mean a lot of Level 6 where you can only see dots running around and you end up watching the big screen all match? I would prefer to sit and watch at home if that’s where I have to sit. Why pay $60 to sit there, pay for overpriced food/beer, when the experience is better elsewhere (even your local pub).

For the good of the game, Melbourne must be given Origin match

What about Hazem El Masri when he was 2-3 years past his prime?

Five biggest State of Origin smokies

Relegation can never work. At best a conference system like the NFL would allow more teams into the League, with the conferences made up of teams from the same region. It also means all regions are represented come finals time with at least 1 team.

Could relegation work in an expanded NRL competition?

I went to St Pats Dundas, where Muggleton was my commerce teacher back in 83-84. I think that’s something which has made him able to effectively communicate the fundamentals. Not teaching me specifically (though probably getting me to shut up was something I can say I provided Muggleton as a life skill!), but teaching 13-14yr old boys, it’s no surprise that he is one of the better coaches going around.

Muggleton gets his message through

The outcry is that Melbourne only wants to host one of the first two matches. Thus NSW or QLD will have the possibility of hosting a dead rubber. I am sure if they shared the order of the matches in a 3yr cycle it wouldn’t be a problem, but Melbourne don’t want to play that game.

For the good of the game, Melbourne must be given Origin match

How about total crowds each game type has put there in there this year

Oval Codes
Cricket/AFL

98K

Rectangle Codes
Super15/Soccer/League

248K.

With so much of the season still to go for rectangle sports to play events in the stadium. It’s a no brainer which codes use the stadium.

The SFS is big enough to accomodate the larger crowds for Oval codes. Skoda stadium if you need to have the odd match out west.

Solving NRL's Sydney stadium dilemmas

Just will add to this. You could make these doubleheaders kids in get free days, so ensure that families are well catered for. It’s the kids who are the generation of fans coming through that you want to love attending live footy. Having great experiences of big crowds and lots of excitement etched into there heads via these sorts of vehicles is what will ensure the next generation signs up as club members.

A very simple solution to NRL attendance issues

It’s not like Hayne hasn’t played lots of winger at club level. When he burst onto the scene, it was wing where he made his mark. Just when you find players like that, you want them to be able to have more of the ball.

So pick Hayne on the wing, he can still weave his magic from there when opportunity arises. There is no way we have a better club winger than him.
