Agreed with everything you said in this thread Macca, but had to log on to disagree with ‘a low scroing slog at the best of times’. That hasn’t been a strength of the Swans for years now, and we’ve played worse in the wet (with a few exceptions) for quite a while. Still think the Blues will have the edge, Swans have been so up and down this year and tend to switch off for whole quarters at a time, but I don’t think they’ll go in dour. Enjoy the game!

AFL News: Goodwin responds to Maynard bump, Pies' Noble gesture, Dusty meets with Dimma

Great write up Tim, and thanks for your writing all year – it’s been absolutely terrific, and you must be the most underrated football writer going round.

Geelong were absolutely dominant. My boys haven’t played worse all year – but the Cats just didn’t let them settle for a second. Well deserved premiership for well run club. Amazing team performance- not a weak link among them.

Bloods will be back. Probably didn’t have a GF even slightly on the cards with the list profile where it is. They’ve been a joy to watch all year, and I remain proud of the year they’ve put in. They’ll learn from this, and hopefully come back with a hunger – a young list with plenty of time to mentally and physically grow. Go Bloods

AFL Grand Final Focus: Dad's Army wins the war - here's how Chris Scott's Cats produced their masterpiece

It’s well earned praise – consistently excellent articles. And good to know you’re in the plus 40 cool club too.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on most of this, but I do agree ‘challenging’ players need different handling (remember the grief dusty copped for not doing press after his return game?! Eff off!!), and I do agree there needs to be a proper discussion about social media and the younger gens of players. A nuanced one as you say.

All the best

Media bullying of Jordan De Goey has been a disgusting witch-hunt

Cam, I love your writing but this is so far off the mark it’s unreal. JDG has had chance after chance. You ask what has he done here? Well let’s start with the complete lack of professionalism. That’s not the look of a man understanding his actual (not made up, not media beat up) misdeeds of the past and atoning for them or showing any respect for his club. And I don’t think you understand the generations below us over 40 fuddy duddies (aren’t you one of us btw?) at all if you think that’s how they all behave or would expect to behave if they were being paid extraordinary money to represent one of the biggest sporting institutions in the land. Would I want JDG at my club? No. Would I want him intoxicated around anyone female that I care about? No. Has he shown any indication that he wants to be a better human being and a more professional athlete who gets the best out of his talents? No. But sure it’s a witch hunt.

Real shocker, Cam, real shocker.

Media bullying of Jordan De Goey has been a disgusting witch-hunt

Just to say I bloody love your articles Brett – you’re a great addition to the squad and long may it continue!

How the AFL has completely botched a noble quest for umpire respect and made them more despised than ever

Really enjoying this series – thanks for writing it!

Your club's best trade of the 21st century: Part 4 - Port Adelaide, Richmond, St Kilda and Sydney

You must be so excited about what you’re seeing though Macca? The Blues are damn good to watch imo

Six Points: Every club needs its own 'Do Better' report, and pantomime villains make the game better, Kane

Rioli story explains a lot. I remember at the time we were kind of gaslight about it – cultural issues, he needs to be home. No, we need to make the AFL home for all. I hope every AFL fan ends up watching the Final Quarter with an open heart – it’s the film to me that shows how far we have to go

Six Points: Every club needs its own 'Do Better' report, and pantomime villains make the game better, Kane

No not decided by the umpires, and Doggies clearly the better side (apart from woeful kicking for goal), but in a game of momentum it’s hard to overstate the impact of one sides 50/50 calls always going the right way and the other’s stifling any change in fortunes.

I’m all for the rule change around umpire abuse, but with that must come an expectation of professionalism in officiating. That performance simply wasn’t good enough. The familiar refrain is always around consistency – I’ve never seen an umpiring performance so clearly favour one side in a long long time. Leaves a bad taste in the mouth, even when your side has clearly been bested.

AFL Thursday Thought Bubble: Swans argue with an idiot as Bulldogs beanstalk becomes a giant

Good read Chuck. Think you’re slightly off on your reasoning with the swans – seems to me their hunting long term JPK and Parker replacements. But don’t disagree with the ranking. In Kinnear we trust

AFL draft power rankings

All the best Stirling, I’ve always enjoyed your writing and analysis. Good luck with whatever you do next 🙂

And don’t worry, not even the most die hard swans supporters had us doing that this year!

'If Greene's suspended we riot' or 'three weeks minimum': AFL split over Toby ban

Was on a group call on the weekend and one of us said, ‘isn’t it good when Essedon is up, so good for the comp?’. We all universally agreed that no one gave a toss about whether they were up or down as long as they weren’t injecting their players full of crap. You’re a talented writer with a good sense of your team Chuck, and like the way they’re playing atm, but don’t think they’ve nearly done their penance. But honestly, essendon fans care far too much about a terrible organisation and hat has had no relevance since 1999 and worse than that has has shown no duty of care for its players nor any reason for anyone to stick around. First and last comment on their, entitled woeful culture. All the best

Essendon Round 12 review

If you’d observed the swans in the last few years, particularly their home record you’d know the swans don’t like the tighter confines either. Also, clogging the corridor and this comment are contradictory.

Essendon's round 4 review

Ah you were doing so well Chuck. The amount of times I’ve sat at the SCG and heard opposition fans accusing sydney fans of not knowing the rules. Politely mate, do one. (I live overseas now, pleased to hear it’s still a thing)

For my money the Bombers were really good on Thursday – something about these two clubs as well. They’ve got a lot to build towards. Of course the problem essendon constantly faces is expectation from the fan base. No patience, meaning constant pushing ‘the window’ trades like sheil and smith. Maybe look at your own club before accusing other clubs supporter bases of not even knowing the rules.

Essendon's round 4 review

Thank you, thank you for reintroducing the weekly roundup. Absolutely needed for the site and well written Liam.

Go swans.

Seven talking points from Round 3 in the AFL

Great article. Geelong for mine but nothing to do with the stats – watching them in their prime was just poetry. So many good players, such silky play. They were phenomenal. I remember us (swans) beating them for the first time in forever after McVeigh had lost his daughter – and it was down at Skilled. It was only shear bloody emotional that got us over the line. Always felt we had a chance against the others on this list, but prior to that game every time you faced geelong you always knew you were going to get smashed. Pure football.

Aside, is there going to be Jay Croucher epic to put a full stop on the season this year?

Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn or Richmond: Which dynasty has been the best?

Great article Josh.

I agree – gut says Richmond. I have actually really enjoyed watching them the last few years. Smiled when they first won, and they were thoroughly deserving when they won their second. Watched on in disbelief when the Pies dismantled them in 18. Incredible game. No negative thoughts about these tigers even entered my mind until this year. Still can’t quite work why I started to think badly of them – I know I have a loathing for teams who play on ‘the edge’ and are self appointed arbiters of where that edge happens to be. Some of Dimma’s post game comments started to erk me – particularly when they’d just played the swans.

Always respected the Cats. Watching them in the 00s was mind blowing – such skill. They made the game look beautiful. Love/hate relationship with the hawks owing to being a swans man. Watching roughie, who I really really respect, cut hannebery in half was one of the most painful things a supporter could ever see IMO. But gee they were good, and clarko is just about the best coach I’ve ever seen. But I never loved them because they were so brutal.

Richmond? I don’t quite see them as the bad guys. Cotch is a legend. Houli? I’d let him babysit my boy. Martin? Just pure footballing joy. Where did he come from? Lynch? Why even do it mate?!? You’re so bloody good!! And such a team ethos. They’ve got the best out of so many.

But geelong are something else – to me just pure footballers, and at their best over many years just so good to watch. What do they put in the water down there? Gazza is the best I’ve ever seen for my money. Watching Hawkins come good has been a joy. But it’s guys like bliscavs and tuoy for mine that make this team so good. Absolute freaks in their roles. Wish selwood wouldn’t duck quite so much cause he seems such a good human, and he’s a hell of an inside bull.

Anyway. Whoever wins, these are two mighty teams full of amazing characters. Can’t wait for the game.

Today Richmond are the AFL's bad guys - but the bad guys are going to win

Pretty perfect. Only thing I’d add is their attitude to the loose ball – bang it forward instead of trying to take possession. This both minimises the chance of stoppage and holding the ball calls, but takes territory. Largely where the ‘chaos’ ball tag comes from IMO

Grand final forecast: Richmond versus Geelong

Sure mate

AFL Trades: Jeremy Cameron to Geelong will be a history-maker

No I completely agree with you christo – I’m not bitter and it doesn’t weigh on my mind because it is how it is. Just reminding folks of recent history. And agree – love our young crop.

AFL Trades: Jeremy Cameron to Geelong will be a history-maker

Just like to remind everyone that when the swans got buddy, COLA went away (for everyone) and the swans were hit with a trade ban. Tom Lynch to Richmond? Nothing happened. Daniher to Brisbane? Unlikely. Cameron to Geelong? Yep no trade ban happening.

Just saying.

Free agency is a beast of the AFL’s own making. For my money, it had to happen in some form because it was one court case away from a restraint of trade ruling that would have blown the AFL’s trade rules apart. But it’s demonstrably not a good thing for the league’s ‘equalisation’ goals and has proven to only keep good teams up the ladder longer. Brisbane being the only exception to spring to mind but happy to be proven wrong.

I don’t really have a fair moral judgment to offer on it – swannies benefited massively from our time at the top and it was tippet not buddy that screwed our cap. But it surely wasn’t what the AFL hoped would happen when they instituted it. In all probability it just slows down the cycle of who’s up and down (notwithstanding the gravity defying geelong who have been outstanding in their list management), but in an era of instantly jumping on clubs that are down and raising the spectre of Tasmania I’m not sure that’s a good thing.

AFL Trades: Jeremy Cameron to Geelong will be a history-maker

[deleting comment in support of article after trying to be supportive and realising this was a different Macca. Apologies second Macca]

What you club needs from the AFL trade period: Part 1

‘Great teams always play on the edge’ – really disappointing stuff from Dimma. A notable other Australian sporting code has recently had to reckon with the limits of ‘the edge’. For my money there’s a difference between playing a ‘contact sport’ and behaving like a ‘pick your expletive’. I don’t think he’ll get suspended but it’s besides the point. If Tom Lynch can’t play well without playing like an ‘expletive’ then he is not champion, regardless of whether Richmond win again.
