I did not, but one game doesn’t mean that skills have gone down. I’ve watched enough football from the 90s to know that skills across the board have 100% gone up as the game has sped up.

Supporters aren't essential for operation, but sport will not exist without them

With all due respect, the claims that people are not watching football because it’s “losing it’s soul”, also, TV ratings for crowdless games have gone up.

Supporters aren't essential for operation, but sport will not exist without them

Not sure I agree with this assessment. The skills have undoubtedly improved, and in response the game has gotten significantly quicker. Anyone that watches game footage from the 90s, 80s, or even 70s, can notice how much slower players move the ball as opposed to the modern game.

Also, torpedoes have been sidelined because they are woefully inaccurate. Even the best proponents of the Torp couldn’t tell you where it was going to land half the time.

Emerton was also used as a winger, these were the general positions that the Golden Generation were sorted into around the 2006 World Cup, by which time Kewell was with the strikers, Emerton was a defender and Cahill a midfielder.

I agree with Kaks, the Golden Generation were great individual players, and we might not see again players with the individual skill level of a kewell, but the current team are a solid crop of footballers, playing as a team for the most part. The skills and talent aren’t solely focussed on individual brilliance but is more evenly spread across the team.

How do the Socceroos compare to their Golden Generation counterparts?

Speaking as an AC Milan fan for over a decade, no, he really wasn’t good. That Croatia game was not out of character for Kalac.

How do the Socceroos compare to their Golden Generation counterparts?

Schwarzer > Ryan > Kalac. This may change in a few years time with Ryan’s growth in Valencia, hopefully he becomes as good if not better than Shwarzer and Bosnich (undoubtedly the most talented Keeper Australia has seen)

I would say that if I could do a best of, it would look something like the following

Schwarzer
Smith, Neil, Moore, Emerton
Bresciano, Jedinak, Grella, Oar/Mooy
Cahill, Kewell (will be swapped out for Rogic or Kruse once they develop a bit more)

Bench
Ryan, Vidmar, Culina, Luongo, Oar/Mooy, Kruse/Rogic

According to latest injury reports list that Adams may recover in time for their next game, at worst, he’ll miss one game. Not that big of a deal.

Dogs' injury crisis continues as they lose another backman

You are confusing statistic chance with eventuality. Just because it has the chance to happen, doesn’t necessitate that it will happen. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Western and hope they do well, but I wouldn’t be over confident about them going all the way. Win a final, build momentum for the next couple of seasons and try to crack the top 4 for a real tilt at the flag.

Will a team outside the top four challenge for the flag?

mattyb, I’m willing to offer good odds that say that doesn’t happen.

Will a team outside the top four challenge for the flag?

Then I am at a loss to explain these delusional thoughts.

Same time last year it was Tiger fans that believe that they could go all the way

Will a team outside the top four challenge for the flag?

The situation Richmond is facing this week is similar to Carlton’s situation in 2011. Finished in 5th, home elimination final, hadn’t won a final in the previous 2 years. Broke through to win their first final, came very close in the Semi Final playing away from home.

Every time this type of article is posted, without fail a delusional Richmond fan will say that they have a chance. Without fail.

You guys are hilarious

Will a team outside the top four challenge for the flag?

Sorry, absolutely missed that in Proof Read. Obviously, they will play in Sydney or Perth

Will a team outside the top four challenge for the flag?

This was a frequent criticism of Ratten, that he had no plan B and he couldn’t beat the better teams.

However, under Rattan’s guidance, Carlton came within a kick of Geelong on multiple occaisions (something that most sides struggled to back then) and despite not being able to “beat a top 4 side”, Carlton beat Collingwood at the start of 2011 when they finished in the top 4.

Under 3 and a bit years as Ratten we would usually get off to good starts, that has yet to happen in 3 years under Malthouse.

I’m happy to wait with Whiley and Jaeksch, they are both clearly long term investments. As for Jones, I think that if he was getting more and better delivery, he could be very good. Unfortunately, it’s just not getting to him enough.

Carlton owe Brett Ratten an apology

I disagree, the Gold Coast loss came at the end of a disappointing season. The start of the season, when Carlton had a fully fit squad, they won the first three games and were on fire.

In regards to Fevola, he was a great player, but he was also toxic. A player could have filled his place but hasn’t.

Carlton owe Brett Ratten an apology

In the age of the internet and Google, the factual errors in your comment are truly stunning.

Setanta was brought to Carlton in 2005, 2 years before Ratten was signed as an assistant coach. He was upgreaded to the senior list at the start of 2006, again, a year before we would even make an appearance at the club.

Aside from that, the insinuation that you should never pick up players who have “never played the sport”, means you miss out on guns like premiership defender Kennelly, Brownlow Medallist Jim Stynes and current Brisbane defender Hanley.

Prior to the 2012 season, which was marred by injuries, Ratten had taken the club from 15th to 5th and a kick away from a Preliminary final. In the 2012 season, Carlton won it’s first three games, including beating Collingwood (a top 4 side from the previous year, a criticism that was thrown at Carlton during their 2011 campaign). It’s first loss to Essendon saw them lose Carazzo (in form tagger) within the first few minutes and Laidler. A few weeks later we lost Murphy, Henderson and Duigan in a game against Adelaide.

Carlton must shed past practices for future glory

You didn’t read the end of the sentence. “version of the tune”. This means it is the most recognisable version of the “Lily of Laguna” tune. Not of the tunes of the AFL.

Also, the Dees song is sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne, one of the most recognisable tunes due to the fact that it is sung almost every year. (Auld Lang Syne is the “theme” of New Years Eve/Day – which makes it sung about as frequently as the Melbourne theme song is after a win)

“they pass out half on the couch, half on the floor.”

I don’t know what you are talking about, it’s simply the most comfortable way of sleeping.

Obviously there are different standards for different levels of employment. If you want to get paid the same amount as the CEO of a relatively big company there are expectations on your performance. This includes a certain standard of professionalism, aka not taking sleeping pills, missing trainings and generally acting like a pillock.

You may not get the sack for it, be a CEO would, and seeing as Mr Martin is hoping for a pay increase, he would act professionally and not like a said pillock.

Time and suitors running out for Dustin Martin

You’d think Brisbane wouldn’t be keen on a player with a reputation for stupidity.

Isn’t the saying “once burnt, twice shy”?

I suppose Voss isn’t around to help “manage” the troubled player.

I completely forgot about that bump, it was a solid crunch from the big man and a perfect example of two things.

1. How to execute a bump

2. That height isn’t necessarily a factor in hitting the player high.

Relax, relax, the AFL bump isn’t dead

That is like saying the tackle is going to die, because if it slips up then a free kick will be paid against a player, a tactic which several players have already used to their advantage. Unless you think that the high tackle rule should also be removed, it makes sense that they try to protect the head. It isn’t going to stop players from laying a tackle.

Still plenty of legal ways to bump, and there will continue to be several legal bumps in the seasons to come as the game continues to be a physical game.

Fear mongers love to pick certain examples were players were suspended. However, to each one of those contentious bumps, there is about 10 other perfect bumps that are executed that they ignore.

Relax, relax, the AFL bump isn’t dead

Seriously?

Do you not remember the what the system was before the MRP? It was a tribunal system, that was done on a case by case basis. That was more of a lottery. At least now you understand that everything is sorted by a category. You might not agree with the assessment, but at least they are clarifying the decisions.

Previously, players just got suspended and weren’t sure what was taken into account that lead to them getting the punishment.

Relax, relax, the AFL bump isn’t dead

I just posted an essay bellow with this point. The author is unaware of what position Hampson plays at Carlton.

Another season of singing the Blues at Carlton

This article uses the wrong facts to back up points that are potentially there.

‘Mick Malthouse’s first year at the Blues has come up short, much to the disappointment of their beleaguered fans”

Which fans are you talking about? Many of the friends that I know are thrilled with the fact that Carlton made it to the Semi-Finals. Regardless of how Carlton got there. People seem to forget how competitive it was in many of the games it lost against quality opposition. It was ahead against Hawthorn, and competitive against Geelong and Collingwood before they kicked away.

“Carlton’s end to the season was known for the third-quarter revival and the fourth quarter nail-biter – a feeling that Geelong and Hawthorn fans only ever experience when they play each other.”

You obviously didn’t watch many of Geelong’s games at the start of the season were they required a massive second half come back against North Melbourne, and trailed Carlton during their game at the start of the year. The Cats also lost a number of close games, against Collingwood, Brisbane and Adelaide and almost lost to Brisbane in the last round of the season.

“Jarrad Waite, their key forward, was out for a lengthy period of time – only to be suspended in his first game return”

Waite admitted that he was an idiot to get suspended in his first game back, and had several good bursts throughout the season that was unfortunately punctured by a knee injury.

“Shaun Hampson’s season ending injury did not assist in their lack of star defenders”

Hampson is third in the pecking order of ruckmen and makes no difference to Carlton’s defending stock. Injuries to Watson, White and McInnes hurt Carlton’s back line. However, why Laidler and Duigan were not given a chance seeing how bad Carlton’s backline was at time is incomprehensible, especially after seeing Duigan’s heroics when he got the chance to play for Carlton. If only Laidler got the same chance.

Murphy needs more protection and actually got it when Robinson and Bell worked well as a tandem. The best games Murphy had was when those two were busting people open in the middle. I am an unabashed fan of Tommy Bells ability to simply run through people. Look at his shepherd on Cotchin in Round 21, simply stunning, I admit I almost shed a tear at the beauty of it.

Carlton does lack depth, something that Malthouse was trying to build by exposing Bootsma and Lucas to AFL level football. Far too early for both to be in senior sides but clearly are on a developmental path. Not ready but still have amazing potential down the line to be good players. Especially Josh Bootsma, who has decent skills, but needs a bigger body to deal with the contests.

Dustin Martin to Collingwood, Dale Thomas to Carlton. Thats a trade I’d like to see.
