Good point but modified versions of the game will only ever been used at early junior level, and they will be used as a transition between Hook in2 Hockey and 11 a side hockey.

Taking hockey back to the people

DJW, fees are a big problem, but clubs here do need to take more responsibility, they need to find ways to reduce costs, etc through sponsorship etc, which will help to bring fees down, and stop passing the blame up the line. How is it possible for allot of country cubs in WA and other parts of the country to keep there fee’s down but not for the city clubs.

Taking hockey back to the people

Professor you almost sound like someone who has been for many years close to the game.

I think Kookaburra 8’s which is now in Hockey in New South Wales is going very well, so to say Modified hockey doesn’t work, is incorrect.

Taking hockey back to the people

Hi Paul
I actually find your resource valuable, but I really do think we need a professional body which makes these sort of things more available to coaches, there are allot of coaches out there that get very little or no help and are flying blind, they need someone to help them.

Australian hockey needs a coaches association

Interesting concept ideas not sure how it would work.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Oh Glen trust me it has its own ugly parent problems, just less of it is visible unless you know where to look.

In terms of club participation, I believe that number to be slightly inflated by about 20%, I believe allot of clubs tend to how do I put this not exactly tell the true picture of the situation because they want to be seen to be bigger than there rivals, or equal to the rivals.

As far as the game in schools I am sorry to say I have been to Melbourne, Sydney as well as spent time in other parts of the country coaching the sport of hockey which I am passion about, and it has dried up in schools and is becoming in most cases and elite game in elite schools.

As for a modified version this is the way forward Hockey Australia all ready know that, as do there state bodies and they are working now on formats that will work such as Hockey 5’s and J Ball etc.

Taking hockey back to the people

That is perhaps the likely direction that Hockey Australia is heading if the resent AHL is any guide, I also think they are thinking other options to.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

A point I missed in this article that I just want to add to, is we also need to find ways to drive the cost of playing the game down, clubs and associations need to become more pro-active in this fees space, looking and innovative ways to bring the costs of playing hockey down. Some clubs all ready are doing this, but I say some, the majority just ring there hands and pass the blame up the line, and that needs to change.

Taking hockey back to the people

Blair the game is moving into a professional era, people have to accept there is going to be change, and they have to be prepared to move forward, if not they will just get left behind.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Not a bad idea Ben.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Also Blair this is not a state based format its a franchise based format, the teams would need to be placed in the markets where hockey can get bang for its buck, not sure it can in Darwin sorry.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Bob Indoor is a great game all version of hockey are great, but Field Hockey is the Olympic game and its the won that leads the charge on the international stage and as such thats why a new professional league has to be that. I also think Beach Hockey has high appeal but again its not the main Olympic version.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Blair this doesn’t replace the AHL, this becomes a new professional league and the AHL reverts back to basically what it is a State Championship. Also I think you will find allot more people in hockey today are thinking my way, including those key players within Hockey Australia.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Thats yesterday’s thinking, not the way people in the Sport are thinking today.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

DJW something must change Hockey WA can’t continue the way they are, if they do hockey will wither and die on the vine in WA.

Hockey in Western Australia must restructure

Lee I dont at this point in time know where they are relocating to, but I dont think its a big secret that Hockey Australia like Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and possible Hobart as there options.

Hockey in Western Australia must restructure

Well Johnno that is about what I thought, so your really not qualified to speak it about the game I know and luv are you then.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Again Johnno you keep looking at negatives you have nothing positive to say.

Glen I like what you had to say, but I suspect Johnno you have never seen a game of hockey in your life let alone played it, and its only AFL for you and anything else can get lost.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Glen AFL, and cricket may well be top dog, but the Australian main-stream media need to broaden there horizons and offer coverage to wider sports. I feel that Australian main-stream media is very much a closed shop.

Love it or hate it, the AFL is top dog of Australian sport

Lee Like I say this is an article which kicks starts a debate, I feel two teams in New Zealand adds a dimension to this that Hockey Australia clearly wants to go, if you look at the AHL in 2016 in Perth. Also I think that ABC can be convinced to cover as they have done before and Fox if this is put together right I think would also take it up considering how successful the HIL has been for them as well as other hockey.

We just need to think outside the square be bold and different.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Again Johnno your thinking in yesterdays world. There is space and it can work, Hockey Australia is always beginning to prove. Just ask you have you seen a hockey game lately, or are once again an AFL or Rugby League person who believes the world revolves only around those sports.

The game of hockey is actually very marketable and has allot of interest, during last years AHL in Perth they had reasonable crowds. Now what I am proposing here is using the successful 9’s format that Ric Charlesworth introduced as the format.

Now I think the ABC would be more than interested in this, and I think Fox will pick it up as they cover hockey now with the HIL etc. Also Hockey Australia has developed a very good digital product and this would be a great concept for that platform.

This article kicks off a debate, perhaps you need to be more positive and not so negative.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

I here what you are saying and this is what this article is designed to do get debate going, but Sydney couldn’t sustain two teams period. Brisbane might be able to yes, and Melbourne under my structure well does because I give one to Geelong.

As for the Two NZ team’s I believe they add a different dimension to this, and considering that in the resent AHL in Perth there were teams from Indian, Malaysia and Singapore, I think this is clearly a direction Hockey Australia is all ready going.

This kicks on the debate even further.

Time for an Australia Hockey Super League

Spoken with like someone who thinks AFL is the only sport, or perhaps Rugby League, or someone from hockey who lives in Yesterdays world and cant move with the times.
