You’d imagine that would have something to do with his non-selection (Behich, Meredith and Gersbach the left back options named in the squad).

Bert van Marwijk makes a few surprise calls with first Socceroos squad

Will be interesting to see how he lines the team up (formation) and what strategies they employ. Knowing that may help analyse his squad selections more so … perhaps …

I’ve consulted the annuals of time but unfortunately records don’t stretch that far back …

Goodwin can’t get a game for his side in Netherlands. More surprising is that his team mate, Dougall, who is a regular starter didn’t get a call up.

Borello has only hit form of late, wouldn’t be surprised to see him make the WC squad if his form persists.

And Australia has a shed load of superstars not listed in the squad existing on which planet??

During the OFC days I don’t believe there were FIFA dates (such as there are today) … or that the OFC system for qualification (usually a knockout tournament) complied with FIFA international breaks either.

Pretty much the NSL based teams were strong enough to get us through the OFC too (and with some ease).

Representing Australia used to be an honour - so what has changed?

Not sure what your point is that you are trying to make?? Chris Wood should stop playing for Burnley in the EPL and go to Phoenix (or Winston Reid)??

The presence of the Phoenix is becoming a problem

That was based on financial reasons not merit though

Memo to FFA: Get moving or get out

Definitely not a priority IMO given the current circumstances. Assuring the FFA governance and setting up an independent A-League board should be the first priorities. From there expansion and promotion can be investigated further.

Should be noted that the NSL never had promotion / relegation either.

Memo to FFA: Get moving or get out

You order is completely wrong given the preface of your argument. Surely number 4 and 5 have to be of the utmost importance (you even say in your article this), because without them the other factors either don’t happen or are inconsequential.

Marketing is about the only one that they could address to an extend atm, but let’s face it the brand is the problem NOT the product (the brand is the FFA governance and A-League board, the product is the actual game / atmosphere etc.)

Again I don’t see the point in worrying about 2 and 3 unless 4 and 5 are resolved first.

Fiona Stanley Hospital (now major hospital in Perth) cost $2 billion (a few years back) and the new kids hospital in Perth (still yet to open) cost $1.2 billion. So agree probably could only afford 2 to 3 hospitals with $2 billion depending on size of them.

Nine things you can buy with $2 billion that aren't new sporting stadiums

Tejay is not known as an attacker, so don’t know if he’ll be able to help much. His best asset would be to protect Porte, if Porte was in a position to defend (which he is not).

Given Porte is 4 minutes behind Froome, can you see Froome picking not to chase attacks from riders such as Porte on the Alps?? Especially if it is only for 30 seconds or the like?

Form shows Richie Porte should be BMC's leader

Sounds like a climb that Aru will be hoping that Nibali and Fugslang hang around a bit longer for this time than the stage the other day. I wonder what Astana’s tactics are … because I dare say they will try to dictate terms on a few mountain stages this Tour, which ones though (and will Nibali and Fugslang drop off until they think there is a climb that Aru will definitely need them, or if he is on a bad day).

2016 Tour de France: Stage 7 preview

PS – the image says it is Team Sky, when it is actually Rohan Dennis of BMC Racing (from last year’s tour). BMC are in yellow at the moment too.

I've got yellow jersey fever

It was Sylvain Chavanel who wanted to go for the stage win in a break (because riding through his home town), but decided to help Coquard instead. Chavanel is a crowd favourite in France, so no doubt he’ll have a crack later in the tour.

The times are thankfully a bit better over west, the night finishes before midnight here … still have some tired days at work the next day though.

I can’t wait for the mountains … see who really is up for this year’s tour and who isn’t (although Nibali looked gone for all money in the second week of the Giro, so you never know … although I don’t think anyone can give Quintana or Froome any time and make it back up).

The problem there is that the animals are trained to injury / kill other animals. Bit different to dogs running around a circle chasing (what is meant to be) a mechanical animal.

Greyhounds are a good start, now let's get rid of...

Yeah agree PB … although I don’t see Porte being in the top five anyway. Top 10 yes, but just not as consistent as the others in the hills. But you never know. Froome and Porte could team up against riders such as Aru, Pinot, Quintata if Froome is isolated on a big climb.

Uran put in a huge effort to try and support Chaves in the Giro (because he was a fellow Colombian) … prior to that Uran was near on invisible and dropped easily each climb, yet on that last climb of the Giro he ended up being too strong for Chaves.

Is the 2016 Tour de France a race between two?

I must admit I much prefer Eurosport’s coverage and commentators (although sometimes the two do overlap)

Aussies deserve balanced coverage of the Tour de France

Alaphillipe has really impressed me of late. Be interesting to see how the battle for the white jersey pans out this year. Yates would be another strong contender for that honour.

Tour de France 2016 teams preview (Part 2)

Bardet hopefully shakes up the peloton a bit in the mountains … not sure how he’ll fair against the big names in the big mountains (Pozzovivo tends to lose time on the long steep climbs … much better at short punchy hills, especially compared to riders like Nibali, Aru, Porte, Froome, Quintana)

Astana must have been tempted to take Scarponi after his showing in the Giro. I reckon Nibali owes him the Giro win this season.

Get use to just avoiding relegation and not going forward under Sam … he might have saved you last season, but you will not progress any under him I fear.

Big Sam's the man for England

My thoughts exactly … just more of the same old guard that never can do anything with a team.

Look at West Ham … gone from an average team under Sam that relied on a long ball game to a top team that plays a fast paced game under Slaven.

Get Sam if England don’t want to get relegated, but not if you want to go forward.

Big Sam's the man for England

Give him a couple of weeks and see if that is still his answer … I think he’ll want to have another crack at the next World Cup!!

Lionel Messi announces international retirement

Could a “solution” be to allow tackles to be lower. You could still have rules about tackling below the waist when kicking (similar to the rugby codes), but perhaps if general tackles are allowed below the waist then you may reduce the risk of players tackling high? Maybe could change it to above the knee (instead of waist)??

It's not easy being Lindsay

Is Thomas riding the Tour this year??

I’d imagine Landa and Thomas both would have tickets on themselves if Froome crashed out early.

Astana had two to three riders in or near the top 10 of the GC in the Giro.
