I can honestly say I’ve never walked out of a game on my own accord. Only when I was younger and went to games with friends who were members of the opposition have I left early, and that was because we were winning by a good margin. I don’t see a point in leaving any game.

Is it ever safe to leave a sporting event early?

I agree that it’s not the most enthralling series, but it is sport and I’m happy to watch it. The Irish actually seem to be fairly interested in playing it though. I was reading an article the other day about some of the players (including their skipper) not being available and one of them said that they don’t get a chance to represent their country because it’s an amateur sport in a country where football and rugby dominates. Just like we grow up playing Aussie rules/league/union/cricket/basketball/tennis/etc, some of them grow up playing both games (and gaelic too) before they turn their attention to playing GAA.

Given gaelic is closer to football than Aussie rules to any other sport, I can see how they still feel the pride in representing their country. You would assume that as an Australian growing up playing the sports available to us that we’d feel the same, but it seems in AFL, once you’ve made it then that’s the pinnacle (before winning the GF/Brownlow) for so many players.

International Rules losing domestic, international appeal

Good read. I’m glad Kearney got his chance at the Eels, even if he took over with a poor list. You feel Bellamy could be around for a long time, like Bennett at the Broncos, but I’m actually expecting something like the Mark Thompson scenario, not the assistant coach move, just the burnt out and need a break problem.

Just a note on your comment about Japanese rugby and clubs named for the companies, it’s far more common than just rugby. A few football (soccer) teams in Asian countries are similar and in some places it’s not just multinational companies but local factories. And let’s not forget the almighty Red Bull (with RBR and Toro Rosso), but they also did the same to a side in their home country (Salzburg, they even changed their colours to match the company) and New York in the MLS are nicknamed the Red Bulls too.
