It’s a fair point. There’s plenty of upside to older umpires though.

How would a 25y.o. umpire handle the relentless chirp from, say, a Shane Warne? Would a younger bloke be more vulnerable to pressure from the slips or the media?

If you put a 25y.o. me out in the middle, there is no way on earth I’m giving Mark Waugh out LBW.

Put me out there today, I’d gladly give Watto out.

The age-old adage about umpires' old age

The first name that popped into my head when I read this comment was Chris Latham sheek. He killed it for the Reds and then seemingly underperformed when he got a chance for the Wallabies. It wasn’t until very late in his career that he was able to produce for Australia what he did for Queensland.

I think it’s safe to say too that Mogg grew into Super Rugby. My first thoughts were “great boot, but that’s about it”. 18 months on and apart from being a little inaccurate at times, he looks like the complete package, at Super level at least. Hopefully he’ll get the opportunities to do the same at test level.

Not everyone can cut it in Test match rugby

I applied the Peter Principle to the backline some time ago: http://www.theroar.com.au/2010/03/22/our-next-generation-of-heroes-destined-for-mediocrity . Interesting reading an article like this 3 years on.

Probably makes more sense in your context though. Great read, thanks.

Not everyone can cut it in Test match rugby

Excellent read.

If I may jump on your coat tails:

The Footy Show has celebrated it’s 20th year without Paul Vautin as host

A-League boss Clive Palmer has been widely criticised for declaring there will never be a team in Western Sydney

Police plea for information regarding the whereabouts of Tom Waterhouse, who disappeared 5 years ago and has not been seen since

How 2013 would have looked in a perfect world

I couldn’t agree more with regards to arguing skills sheek.

I’ve learned that the strongest case to support the most valid of points can be blown to pieces with a simple throw away comment that hasn’t been thoroughly thought out. You end up fighting the battle on a completely new front which usually ends in a humiliating concession, or in some roarers cases, it just doesn’t end.

I think that’s why Spiro and David incite so much debate. Every article has a sprinkling of seemingly flippant throw away opinions which often aren’t explored or justified in any way. Throw enough of them out there and you’re bound to spark some debate.

Good read Ryan and well said sheek.

Why you’ve got to love The Roar

You might want to have a chat with that barmy army of yours if you find nationalistic stereotyping an issue. Last time I saw them here, they informed me in loud voice, in pseudo-unison that they “F@%$ed Matilda” (for the record, there are conflicting arguments as to what Matilda is, though we’ve narrowed it down to either a sheep, or the swagman’s penis: http://blogs.smh.com.au/thedailytruth/archives/2007/07/the_meaning_of_waltzing_matild.html I always chuckle when they start singing that one) and that “we all live in a penal colony”.

Nationalism in a political sense is very dangerous, but in the context of sport, at least between the “colonies”, it is just good fun.

And no, it is clear as day that England don’t give a rats that anyone finds those tactics boring. It’s just a statement of fact. It’s not supposed to hurt their feelings or play with their minds or change the rules of the game. One might say that Alistair Cook is a rather tall chap. It is not to say that he needs to be shorter, or tall people should be banned.

Let me make it crystal clear how the bulk of Australian’s feel about this series: Our top order were rubbish, the umpires were also rubbish but weren’t the reason we lost the series, England were at times boring, the better team won.

If any of that is untrue or “sugar-bloody-coating” it, then I’m an astronaut.

Don't sugar coat it: England won 3-0

So now I’m being told I shouldn’t be nationalistic, when my nation is competing with another nation to prove which is the better nation at cricket?

Everyone in Australia is “sore” about losing, but not towards England. I’ve never seen Aussie fans so humble and congratulatory towards an English opposition.

But apparently we’re still not humble enough. Am I supposed to laud Cook for setting what appeared more like security guard placements than field placements? Or praise England for showing us that the correct run rate for test cricket is no more than 2.5 run an over? Get real.

You were comfortably the better team, I was very impressed with the way you approached the first three tests, you won, congratulations, but that’s all the fluff you’re getting out of me. Stop your whingeing and take a compliment.

Don't sugar coat it: England won 3-0

I knew I was in for something special when my anti-virus software flagged this page as potentially dangerous due to “extreme arrogance”.

I don’t know what everyone else has been reading but all I’ve heard in the Aussie media for the duration of the Ashes has been self loathing. And rightfully so.

Yes there have been reports regarding England’s batting and field placements being ridiculously dull and boring, but it was ridiculously dull and boring. It’s a reporters job to tell us what’s going on and that’s exactly what was happening.

England were the better team, Australia’s top order were woeful and congratulations on your win. But if you princesses expect us to not take any positives out of the series, and coddle the English regardless of how they go about playing the game, you can blow it out your pasty white backsides.

Don't sugar coat it: England won 3-0

I think Cronulla should be pleased that Wests have a lot of young talent coming through, no?

Wests Tigers 2013 vs Wests Tigers 2001 - who’s worse?

Two reasons:

1. The Dragons did not just lose to Parramatta
2. John Hopoate never played for the Dragons, so such an article would not include as many rectal references, a trademark of this scribe

Top shelf Chris.

Wests Tigers 2013 vs Wests Tigers 2001 - who’s worse?

is this comment available in paperback?

Mitchell Pearce vs fat, naked bald guy

Anyone see the security guard who forgot he was chasing a streaker, backed up Scott on the inside and tripped over the goal post? Sign him up! Still showed more class than Pearce.

At least the streaker saved a try. What did Mitchell do?

Mitchell Pearce vs fat, naked bald guy

Had an Agarsm.

SPIRO: Agar emerges as a star of Australian cricket

Your middle names don’t happen to be Stewart and Graeme do they? Usually writers pseudonyms are a little less obvious “Alec”.

Three reasons why Australia can't win the Ashes

At least be consistent oik. How is Papa putting blokes into orbit going to attract mums and kiddies and Revlon sponsorships? Go on. Get on your soap box. Tell us all how damaging this is to the image of the game. Tell us how he should have been sent off for scaring the mums. Tell us how Jamie Buhrer should have been marched too just for being in the vicinity of the incident.

You and your mates are hypocrites. You want the refs to be tough, but not too tough. You don’t want the game to be hard, but you don’t want it to be soft. The NRL go out of their way to appease your gentle souls, yet nothing they do is good enough. You can’t be pleased so the NRL should just ignore you.

Why the banning of the Biff is serious business

Keep an eye out for the new “Brut Delicate Hits” segment on the Sunday Footy Show.

Why the banning of the Biff is serious business

Has anyone ever been sin binned in lawn bowls for trying to break up a fight?

It’s a joke.

When is it going to dawn on you mob that the refs didn’t overreact? Daniel Anderson has come out and said it. This is their stance and they are not backing down.

This isn’t a one off refereeing error, it is the norm now. Stop blaming it on the refs because they did as instructed. It’s the fault of you softcorks and the hysterical media.

You just can’t bring yourselves to admit that you’ve potentially ruined the game. “It wasn’t me, the refs overreacted.” Well it was you, the refs did exactly what you asked of them and now we’re playing 11 a side touch footy.

Nice one tossers.

Why the banning of the Biff is serious business

To all the bleeding hearts who continue spruik this “won’t somebody think of the sponsors/children/Queenslanders” hysteria I have this to say:

Enough. Enough of the whining about the game’s image. Enough of the “Neanderthal” tags. Enough of the grandstanding and the self-righteous gibberish.

You got what you wanted. You’ve made the game a laughing stock. You don’t need to justify it. We know exactly why you did it and no amount of “it had to happens” is going to change the way the Neanderthals think about what you have done.

Congratulations, you won, but please, shut up.

Four observations from State of Origin II

I agree with you on both the effort by the Maroons and the performance of Merrit. Like everyone, I really wanted him to have a great game but he made some horrible reads in defense and failed in his test against Inglis.

No one had any impact against a staunch Qld defense so I’m not coming down too hard on Woods, though his place may be in question.

Dugan on the other hand was one of our best. He made some errors, but he always does. He was solid under the high ball, one drop from memory, but he was taking a lot of them and had to cover for Merrit on numerous occasions. I think you’ll see him retain his spot for Game III with Hayne to return to the wing.

Fabled 'Origin material' is a real thing

Is that a euphemism?

Sorry THS. Incredible article. Read it twice.

The NRL need to show some foresight and bring in tough new laws, mid-season of course, to stamp out the possibility of pinching creeping into our game. Automatic sin-bins for pinches, camel bights, chinese burns or nipple cripples. Send offs for dead legs and vulcan neck chops.

We need to think of the children. http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view5/4521479/think-of-the-children-o.gif

At last, the thuggery has come to an end

I’ll be keeping my money in my pocket tonight. I’m leaning towards Qld but i can’t bring myself to bet on them. If NSW lose tonight I’ll be backing them for game 3. If they win tonight I’ll probably abstain again come game 3, you just don’t know with those “dead rubbers”.

If a one-eyed supporter can’t bring himself to bet on his team when they are in the lead, it says a great deal about the tightness of these 2 teams.

Gamble responsibly kiddies.

State of Origin 2013 Game 2: Maroons to get up with mighty effort

Agreed. Just googled them. Outstanding.

Me too. That game changed everything for me.

I’d just started a new job and they gave me some tickets to take some clients out. In the years leading up to that game my love for league had waned quite a bit. There was Super League and then the 2003 RWC where I traveled around a bit and had a blast, so I was more of a rugby nut by 2005.

Then I watched Joey. It was beautiful. Two banana kicks to un-nerve the fullback, followed by a straight one off which we scored. Genius. Perfection.

After showing up with such low expectations, he made it the most unforgettable sporting event I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending.

He’s the greatest footballer I’ve ever seen and is responsible for my passion for rugby league being completely rejuvenated. Easily the number one Blues moment. Great choice Ryan.
