I just think the finalists in the europa league should qualify for the champs league, that should increase interest in the euro league

A United European Cup?

i realise that merging certain teams would obviously cause crowd violence between the teams own fans, which is why the teams and FFA have to use a little common sense on the issue.. Also because there will be only a max 2 from each state it minimises the chance of local fans going head to head at each other

A new view on a Second Division in the A-league

But because a few clubs have been merged, the ethnic ties go out the window because if an italian club merges with a croation club and greek club, where is the ethnic tie? What country would it represent? Alongside the rebranding and community engagement it could squash the issue or make it irrelevant

A new view on a Second Division in the A-league

Tactically this season will be better than last due some of the exciting coaches we have (Blieberg ,Branko, Lavicka). Pip, to be honest Melbourne and CC have never really been the exciting teams of the league. So i dont think you should judge the season based on last nights game. The step up in quality should come from teams like GC, SFC, Perth, Bris, Jets (Branko is a good coach, and they have bought well in the offseason, particularly Vignaroli)

How far has the A-League really come?

FFA got this one right, i still dont know why melbourne havent improved their scouting networks or player development with the money they would have outlayed

FFA halts the Melbourne Victory super brand

I hope we play Nikita so we can lock him in before Ukraine realise what a class player he is. Also he could answer our striking problem, or at the very least be very effective off the bench (ala Kennedy at 06 world cup)

Meet Pim Verbeek's new Socceroos

i never said the cap should be changed, but a contract worked in locking them into league

David Gallop is letting rugby league die

I just read PIm defended the a-league before the match, looks like alot of people have been critical of him wrongly

Verbeek proves he was right man for job

I once was a huge supporter of league, and have also converted to football. I do follow league but not as reilgiously. Im not even watching the game but instead doing ASSIGNMENTS!!!! I will listen to it on the radio however

State of Origin, I forgot it was on!

Rugby League on the coast wont work. It has the Mariners there now and i beilieve that there is only room for one team up there. All league fans up there already have a club to support anyway, so to expect them to automatically change is an issue. PNG should be the priority NRL expansion team as it will help the international game on so many levels, as well as addint increased sponsorship

What do the Central Coast Bears have to do to get a start?

I think what should be done, is give all the expansion clubs the go ahead, with 2 of them placed in the a-league and the other 3 placed in second division. Then merge the neighbouring State league clubs into regions eg. Marconi, sydney united, etc into South-West Sydney the change of colours, and amalgamation should allow for each clubs supporter base to be enticed to the A-league, You now have 11 spots for these new merged teams to go in a second division, ethnic ties abolished in the long term, finiancial security, huge player pools through juniors (along with excess players being able to go to the new teams).

However getting the clubs to agree to this is a different story

Between a football and a hard place

True what you said Chop but if i was the club, i would be monitoring Mckinnas results very closely in the first half of next season.

Tough decision time for the Mariners

i do think mckinna needs to go, like you said choppy he is the reason the mariners HAVE been succesful. I think with the ever evolving A-league and increase in standards he is beggining to struggle. Also it could be (and i firmly believe so) that he has become a bit stale at the club, a quality coach (possibly asian) should be looked at in addition to the Defence Mid and Strikers.

Tough decision time for the Mariners

Ive said this for a while now, but we need a mentality shift in that it is OK to like more than one code. Alot of people are so hellbent on protecting their own code that they dont watch any other codes. Its a shame really

Why do code wars exist in Australia?

Billo, i used to be a mad supporter of rugby league but since the world cup converted to football. I do however still watch league often. People need to get through their heads that its ok to like more than one code, as opposed to competing on which is the best.

The thing that really pushed me over the edge from rugby league to football was in football i feel appreciated as a fan, i cant explain it exactly why. Rugby league seems to have this more clinical “ill take your cash now go” feel to it. Which is reflected in the atmosphere at games, as oppossed to football where you feel like your brothers in arms.

Im not bashing rugby league, as i said i still follow it and support it but this is one of the reasons why i think its in “fashion” to follow football because more people are aware of it now.

The ups and downs of following football

Personally, i think its too late. Rugby League had their chance and now its gone, the mariners have established themselves there now and i dont think the poulation is big enough to support more than one sporting team. The NRL should be offering this incentive to teams willing to relocate areas where there are no teams even remotely close like Adelaide, Perth, NT or even (i doubt very much) Papua New Guniea. IMO Papua New Guniea should be the priority expansion team, it brings in more corporate money, more players and more support, not to mention gives International Rugby League a boost… but that is a different topc all together

Is the Central Coast a sporting graveyard?

Personally i think the league is doing fine, bar some poor coaches. If we can get some quality coaches into teams like the mariners, perth, wellington, and melbourne (they do win things, but arent exciting to watch, and their development of players is questionable). Then the standard of the league improves, the standard of players improve, which means bigger transfer fees, which means better imports, which means more crowds. Fans would rather see quality football as opposed to a big name import IMO. I personally hope sydney go through undefeated so more clubs are encouraged to get less known european coaches with pedigree, or possibly some Asian coaches.

The A-League: a league of cliches?

No one realises the 6+5 rule is really bad for Australia and alot of nations for that matter, we rely on europe to develop our players (as do alot of the African Nations). If the 6 +5 rule is implemented then there will be alot less Aussies heading over due to the clubs restrictions, which means less development of our players. The Euro Super league is a stupid idea because 1st it will kill domestic comps, 2nd champs league will die which is part of the reason players want to play in europe.

England has the best League in the world. So what?

I think they need to get competitions started in high schools and colleges, possibly ones without strong links to gridiron. You can then build a culture in these places and help the game grow. It also wouldnt hurt to include tomahawks in a yearly international comp (like pacific nations cup, 4 nations, etc). For the game to really take off internationally i do believe USA and China should be the first nations who become competitive with AUS,NZ,GB. Also they should move the WCC to the USA, its a neutral country and with a bit of promotion from a Russel Crowe or the like it could really give some exposure

Rugby league to have a crack at the US market

Personally i hated football untill the 06 world cup (i was a massive league supporter) when i jumped on the bandwagon, it was at this time i realised what a great sport football was, i even forgot origin was on! After the world cup i started to keep an eye on football in europe and the a-league and slowly in manifested into the passion i have today and it has even overtaken my love for rugby league. This will happen with the next lot of bandwagoners and help in getting the sport to grow, you should not shut people out just because they werent there at all the near misses. Finally during the 06 campaign i read a newspaper article which probably sums up why people are starting to convert. It said that alot of people hated football because there was not enough scoring in it, however the world cup had shown that one goal is really special in football and australians are beggining to understand this

Hitch up the Socceroos bandwagon for 2010

Im curious if Pim is going to give Nicky Carle a run at all, leading to the world cup. I mean surely hes worth giving a few games to see if he can at least make the squad.

Socceroos still have a lot of work ahead - World Cup or not

I was at them game, and i would have to say whilst we werent entertaining, we did control the match for the majority which is what is required to succeed at the world cup. We havent got many entertaining players so i dont know why everyone is puhing for a lot of entertainment. on Macca people dont realise he is a goal POACHER, not a lone forward (he doesnt have enough pace for that). He cant poach if there is no one to poach off.

Socceroos still have a lot of work ahead - World Cup or not

i love the shoot outs personally, its like the saying goes “there is no better way to win a game, but there is also no worse way to loose on penalties”.

Should penalties decide football matches?

Our main problem this season has been we lost some quality players, but did not sign any. We would of been better off signing some quality forwards and using some of our older forwards (ogre, mason, fitzy) in 20 min spurts in each half. our main issue is depth in the forwards. Tupou was a huge loss for us
