For internationals I support Wales first, All Blacks second and then anyone who is playing the Wallabies. For Super Rugby I support the Rebels, then Chiefs and vaguely cheer when the Sunwolves try hard.

That’s ridiculous. The dangerousness of the play is created by the tackler, not the ball carrier. Imagine the tackler wasn’t there and you penalised the player for jumping (as your rule suggests), that would be a farce!

Five talking points from All Blacks vs British and Irish Lions second Test

Similarly to ‘cynical play’ I’ve seen this a number of times before in domestic rugby and possibly 6 nations. Not a new ‘interpretation’ just a rare event when it happens.

I think the Faumuina/Sinckler penalty is a idiosyncracy we have to live with in rugby. They are few and far between. If we are committed to protecting players then that has to stand even for things that are accidentally committed by the offending player. Yes there was no way Faumuina could have pulled out but similar situations happen with tackles ‘slipping high’ or the tackled player falling into high contact. Player safety must be put first even when it can be frustrating and result in some occasional odd calls.

Regarding the exploitation of the ‘tackling in the air’ law that supposedly could be put into play. Think it through. If you tried to receive every pass whilst in the air the opposition would simply adjust their timing, wait till your feet touch the ground and smash you backwards. The attacking team would constantly be losing ground and never getting over the gain line. But maybe we need to see it in practice. I may be wrong.

I’m not sure you’re quite right on the Vunipola thing. Taylor’s charge was late and deserved a penalty (which wasn’t seen), as did Mako’s. But his card was for cleaning out Barrett dangerously and unnecessarily (Garces explained BB wasn’t a part of the ruck), in the context of Mako’s frequent ill discipline. At least that’s how I saw it.

Oh, what exquisite drama

Would you be able to be specific regarding the inconsistency? Just cause it’s hard to argue semantics. (There are full replays on youtube now 🙂 )

From my view I thought he reffed well, and I say that painfully cause my team conceded sooo many penalties. It certainly wasn’t SH style reffing, very different to last week, though it’s hard to tell exactly what impact it had on the fluidity of the game given the torrential rain.

The ref simply has to assess the facts in front of him/her. It shouldn’t matter what the match is. If we’re going to blame anyone it should be SBW for putting himself in a position where he can get a 50/50 yellow or red card. SBW virtually determined the result by HIS actions, not the refs.

Highlights: Lions level! All Blacks beaten, Sonny Bill red-carded

It’s a bit hard to bring on North when he has an injury that means he has to go home.

Also, what do you mean by there being no morality in the game anymore? As in it was immoral of SBW to concede a red card or immoral of the ref to give it?

I admire Gatland for all the flack he is taking. Whilst he is in overall charge of the tour the reality is that he is not making these decisions in isolation. He has a coaching team around him that he will be making the decisions with, yet no one talks about that. They don’t blame Steve Borthwick (forward coach) for picking Dacey or Hill, they always go for Gatland. You’d think he’s a dictator the way he is vilified in the press. It would be so hard to be in his situation, trying to run a tour whilst being criticised for every decision he makes by everyone else who wants to over analyse and nitpick.
No doubt he has made mistakes but overall I think it’s been a pretty successful tour so far. Exciting rugby has been played and the Lions have won the two games they targeted as most important.
Maybe after the tour has finished we can reassess, hearing from the staff and players what the atmosphere was like. So far I’ve only heard positives from inside the Lions camp, but I’m happy to be corrected in the future.

Gatland's selections tarnish dominant win

Fair call, got a bit hot-headed there as I misread it.

The High Five: Crusaders vs British and Irish Lions, plus a little Super Rugby

Only one starting AB?
– Codie Taylor (Given Coles in injured)
– Sam Whitelock
– Owen Franks
– Joe Moody (with Wyatt Crockett on the bench)

In fact I’d even argue Dagg hasn’t show he’s better than the other wing options to even start for the AB.
My back three would be Rieko Ioane, Ben Smith & Julian Savea.

I think warrenball can help you score tries and win games but it require near perfect execution. Today the Lions had a number of exciting attacking plays but they failed in the finishing, missing passes, dropping balls or not quite getting right positioning.
Because of the tight style of play of warrenball those opportunities only come around half a dozen times in a game so you always have to capitalize. I think it’s probably a little too much to ask but I guess we’ll see.

Fair call. I guess I was thinking at this point who has nailed themselves into the starting XV, in which case it’s only really Faletau. Really excited to see who will step up, so much competition for back row spots!

I’m taking Gatland at what he said before he announced Warbs at captain that he’s not going to automatically pick the captain in the starting XV. As we saw last Lions tour he’ll pick who he thinks is the best combination, not just on reputation.
Personally I think if Warbs has time to show his form from the end of the 6 nations I think he will start. So far on tour the back rowers that have stood out to me are Faletau (pure class), and Stander and Moriarty with strong ball carrying. I haven’t seen enough yet from O’Mahony, O’Brien, Tipuric or Haskell to warrant selection. Still a long time before the first test though!

Incredibly impressive to limit the Crusaders to 3 points in 80 minutes.

Not true. You’re seeing what you want to. Don’t you remember the absolute pushover scrum penalty in the first half?

What a kick from Dagg!

That’s how a penalty for early engagement works…

because he was contesting it with Todd. Even on the replay it’s messy.

Gentle bit of a rebuke here. Yes he is french but he’s not the same ref as the blues game. That was Pascal Gaüzère, this is Mathieu Reynal.

Tackler didn’t clearly release and the ref told him to stop contesting. It’s his own fault.

Crusaders vs British and Irish Lions highlights: International Rugby live scores, blog

Is that actually illegal? It’s not hands in the ruck.

Crusaders vs British and Irish Lions highlights: International Rugby live scores, blog

He was out of place, so he sent it to the TMO. What else would you have him do?
Scrum penalties have been leaning the Lions way but he punished them when the Crusaders dominated. Mostly it’s niggle and he’s given short arms. Occasionally illegal boring in.
At the breakdown he’s punishing both teams for slowing it down.
Don’t think that’s very generous re. his English.

Can you give some examples of what you mean? Just rhetoric at the moment and it’s hard to argue over that.

It’s quite entertaining. Haha!

Lions have been more dominant but it’s up to them to convert pressure into points/tries.
