As Fury’s peculiar player recruitment policy continues, it would seem the club has once again come out on top – with talented youngster David Williams expected to replace the outgoing Brendon Santalab.

The news comes as ex-Sydney recruit Brendon Santalab departs Perth (prior to the two pre-season friendlies) and heads off for Asia in search of a fat contract, similar to the moves of Jade North and Brazilian Felipe.

Though, as previously mentioned, Ian Ferguson more often than not comes prepared for a shock departure, this time in the form of Brondby striker David Williams.

Although Williams will not arrive with the amount of fanfare as marquee signing Robbie Fowler, the former Brisbane Roar man, in my opinion, could be equally as important.

It’s a huge role for a 21-year-old, but one he will have to take on if he is to push his claims for a World Cup in Pim Verbeek’s squad and add to the single cap Williams currently holds.

David Williams’ fall from grace at Danish club Brondby was all but sealed when the young striker claimed that, if his lack of game-time continues, it would likely lead to a loan-spell away from the club.

That statement raised many eyebrows, not least that of Brondby coach Kent Nielson, who almost immediately responded by sending Williams on trial in South Africa (which either didn’t work out or Williams rejected) and later told the Danish press: “I have more to say, but that will remain between David and I. Such things must certainly be handled internally,” Nielson explained. “But in general, footballers must stick to what they are employed to do and it is the same in this case with David Williams.”

All of which has contributed to bringing the Socceroo back to Australia to join Fury’s ranks, albeit in Perth for the double-header against Glory and Wolverhampton.

Also worth mentioning is that no deal is done and Williams is simply on ‘trial’.

Both club and player will then decide if they want to work together and, assuming all goes to plan Williams will complete a one-year loan deal to start off with. A Fury spokesman confirmed the 21-year-old had flown into Perth, saying no deal had been struck.

“All I can say at this stage is that he has flown in and we’re having a look at him,” he recently told au.fourfourtwo.com.

With Brisbane being Williams’ hometown, it is little wonder North Queensland was his next preferred destination. However, the expected capture of the Brondby striker still comes as a huge shock. As does the sudden departure of Brendon Santalab, although as many of his critics conclude, Fury will need much more than a few spectacular goals to enjoy a successful debut in the A-League.

There is an obvious firepower which David Williams possesses, despite finding it hard to showcase in recent times with Brondby.

He may not be greatly missed in Denmark, but I have no doubt he will enhance a poor-performing Fury side if presented the opportunity, making his signature a superb piece of business for Ian Ferguson.
