Ive been following NZ rugby now for many many years. I saw that game as highlighting the main issue facing the national team. That chiefs’ pack was almost an All Black pack and it got bullied badly. They were beaten in both physicality and in smarts. Only Samisoni Taukei’aho (who goes from strength to strength) and to a lesser extent Luke Jacobson, came out of it looking like they could match it at a higher level. They tried hard but the ineffectual efforts of the pack reminded me of the recent AB losses to England, Ireland and France.
ANALYSIS: Why Lord Laurie is still king of the contact zone
I can remember seeing Wellington College (NZ) first XV’s hooker throwing into the lineout as early as 1964. Even though Wellington College was at that time one of the power-houses of NZ secondary school rugby, it still took many years for the advantages of this tactic to be recognised further up the food chain and illustrates just how resistant to new ideas rugby was in those days.
Is rugby really better in the professional era?
How about the variations on “This 13 year old schoolboy will be the next Jonah Lomu”.
Apart from being plain dumb, it can cause real damage to a teenager to be told that they will be the best in the world. Refer Isaia Toeava.
The top pet peeves of rugby chat
No-one in NZ takes Chris Rattue’s comments on rugby seriously and I’ve never bothered reading Andrew Anderson. Even so, most Kiwis would rate Itoje as a serious talent.

Love to see Beauden B at second five outside Cruden.
Injury-hit All Blacks call up five rookies
Confusing! My reading of the Roar over the last few months had led me to the conclude that the only rugby players of any interest are current or ex rugby league players who could maybe play on the wing!
