AFL Oracle: There's always one! Which of last year's bottom five is September-bound in 2024?

Sad but deserves the tough penalty for stupidity if nothing else especially being caught after a game.
Been a lot of talk about the so called ‘culcher’ at Fuchsia- Land and if this is emblematic theyre in a bit of trouble. Probs time to roll out the ‘backs against the wall’, ‘theyre all out to get us’… etc etc and see if they can turn it around.

Dees forward's career in the balance as two-year ban for cocaine use looms

165? Anyways youre right its about time Frampton comes alive.

Magpies ace suffers long-term injury with entire 2024 season in doubt

Barassi coached an interstate team in the AFL when called upon to do so by the AFL. And no-one supported and actively pushed for the development of the national competition more than RDB throughout his long career.

COMMENT: It's time for the AFL to immortalise Ron Barassi - and only one prize is worthy of his name

Crap. You cant please all the people all the time and as Ive already posted here for so many reasons, nothing respects this great game better than having one of its inaugural legends named on the award to the premier team.

COMMENT: It's time for the AFL to immortalise Ron Barassi - and only one prize is worthy of his name

Trash. Sheedy couldnt be mentioned in the same sentence and Im a RFC member. Whitten was up there but one premiership as a player and finishing as a playing coach of an ordinary side doesnt really cut it either. Whitten’s greatest contributions were as a commentator, larrikin and supporter of the big V. Dont speak for me, Im very happy and would be proud of having a trophy named after someone who epitomises the greatness of the game thanks.

COMMENT: It's time for the AFL to immortalise Ron Barassi - and only one prize is worthy of his name

I cant believe some of the garbage written here opposing RDB’s name on our premiership. He is the most important individual contributor to our great game. 6 premierships as a player, 4 as a coach and a total of 17 grand finals overall. Coaching 4 different VFL/AFL teams including an interstate team over a total of 23 years. But not just that, the values he stood for as epitomised by his saving a woman from being attacked in the street, his warmness and availability to everyone and if you want to bring interstate footy into it, no-one better foresaw the need to have, and supported a national competition like RDB. The Ronald Dale Barassi Trophy is not just honouring him, but the core aspects of our great game game.

Absolute Bloody Legend. Regardless of who you follow he was one of the (if not the) greatest ever for our great game. 10 flags: 6 as player and 4 as coach. Plus 6 other grand finals as runner up. Check my maths on all this but is that 12.5% of all grand finals to date ? Also such a forward thinker and innovator.
How about we honour him by naming the AFL Premiership Cup after him?? The Ronald Dale Barassi Trophy has a certain ring to it? RIP Barass.

'Full and extraordinary life': AFL legend Ron Barassi dies aged 87

Hysterical ‘the average age of attendees (at) AFL about 82 years… ‘ Clearly you have absolutely NFI lad.
AFL already had a record 4 million through the gate by mid season 2023. So based on ‘average age’ that must be a significant percentage that are into their late 80s, 90s and over. Really?? Reality is since AFLW more kids than ever before including girls are attending and playing the indigenous game. If you cant back up your rubbish, leave it out.
Also reality is even Sam Kerr would have been playing AFL now (that she played as a girl), following in her father and brother’s footsteps had age restrictions at the time not kicked in. Thankfully thousands more girls now see a pathway to AFL which didnt exist back then so the next Sam Kerrs will be playing for Freo or WCE. Cheers!

Will the Women's World Cup supercharge football's growth in Australia?

Great article, thank you!

There is no doubt to me that the spirit of cricket dies a cruel death every time the fine upstanding English cricket team loses ( read: is cheated).

Surely as any decent cricket chappie knows, the spirit of cricket is only ever embodied when England so gloriously triumphs like it did in the first Test of this series… um…

The spirit of cricket was murdered in cold blood by sunburnt thugs - and the game might never recover

Yeah but the poms took it another step!!! 😂

UK View: 'He didn't look like a leader. He looked pathetic' - Cummins caned but Poms also skewer 'dozy' Bairstow

Its pure loveliness! Beating the bath dodgers and then hearing/seeing their faux outrage. From the land that brought us bodyline, lecturing us on the ‘spirit of the game’.
Most of all holier-than-thou Stokes saying he would have recalled Bairstow if he were Cummins. Biggest load of BS Ive heard.
Keep it up you stinking bath dodgers – we love it!

UK View: 'He didn't look like a leader. He looked pathetic' - Cummins caned but Poms also skewer 'dozy' Bairstow

Lovely to beat the Bath Dodgers at home. Lets hope for four more of the same.

'If you can't handle that': Defiant Pommie paceman defends disgraceful 'f---ing prick' send-off

Yeah definitely. And if Port had a bad year or even fail dismally in finals, will Josh Carr still have been coaching? Also to say Hinkley has absolutely no hand in selection? Utter BS – its 100% Hinkley’s team. Even if he does delegate certain parts, that’s his decision to live or die by.
BTW we play on a footy ground mate, not a pitch.

Who is really coaching Port Adelaide?

As usual, Freo is the best side in it, and have been since Round 1 1995. Clearly only injury, bad umpiring and blatant AFL cheating in fixturing have stopped Froe winning every premiership since. Poor Doctors.

Can Richmond thread the needle of not bottoming out?

Larkey looks a pretty ordinary player right now, doesnt seem to go in as hard as he could, drops his head in any marking contests and continually looks for the easy goals out the back. Dont believe me? Check out the replay. So his claim to fame is 6 twice against the equal worst side in it? Please…. He’s got a lot to work on to continue to play AFL especially with a harder coach who wont suffer fools.

Apart from that, Davies-Uniacke is a genuine star, Cunnington and Greenwood always give everything and Sheezel is the real deal and a star in the making. Clarkson would have been horrified to lose this game and relief is probably his major emotion.

Otherwise a very forgettable game hidden in the once favoured Saturday afternoon timeslot. WCE need a complete reset and you feel for Simmo, but he may not be the one to lead them out of the wilderness.

Footy Fix: The Shinboner Spirit returns! Clarko's first masterpiece gets Roos back to their roots

Some glaring factors means unfortunately the Tiges struggle this year.

Their defence is weak. We have no backs to stand big forwards as Astbury has never really been replaced. Tarrant is not the answer he is well past his prime and if still at the Roos, Clarkson wouldve already finished him. Gibcus may be, but he’s nowhere near it yet and while Miller is tall he is a ruck rather than a defender. Balta is probably more suited to an athletic wing (remember Richo?) as he still needs a lot of work defensively.

Our defensive skills all over the ground are haphazard and frankly we dont put enough pressure on the ball carrier meaning accurate delivery into an already weak backline will be increased. I fear we may have some big points kicked on us this year.

The answer really lies in persisting with some good young players that continually get overlooked for senior positions.

The dynasty is far from over: count Richmond out at your peril

For the benefit of Dicky Goyder and his cohorts, lets just rule out one CEO candidate straight away. Brendon (Benny) Gale is hopeless. He has no clue what he’s doing or saying or thinking (if he actually does the latter). He’s irresponsible, of low intellect and probably barely passed primary school. He has no negotiation skills, his networking and relationship abilities and EQ are deplorable, he is all at sea setting and achieving (seemingly impossible) goals and clearly is all round a very dodgy character. He should remain for at least another 10 years at the RFC who clearly deserve him.

Why are we still awaiting the AFL's succession plan for Gillon McLachlan?

Youre right about Grimesy. He’s way too valuable and that to me indicates we need to be getting his replacement(s) trained up pretty quick. Its not Gibcus who is going to be great but it may be someone yet to debut. Broad and Vlastuin who turn 30 and 29 respectively in two months are coming to the end of their careers and Tarrant is an ordinary stop gap at best. Our back seven in a few years may well only contain Balta (if he steps up and I think he can), Dan R and Josh G of the current team (with Baker and Short rotated through half back and mid/fwd) so we really need to start finding some defenders.

Three irrational fears for Richmond's 2023 season

Absolutely pathetic. Cummins youve got to take the majority of the blame. The brilliant strategy of ‘we’re all great cricketers who know our game and what to do when’ is not working. Having led the undermining of JL and seeing him replaced with yesman, supercoach and outstanding district cricketer Andrew McDonald, Cummins must step up or move aside.

Perfect – Superbowl day!

'Day of mourning, not celebration'; 'committed to reconciliation': How AFL, NRL marked Australia Day

Yep some real hacks incl Ivor Warne Smith, Roberts Thompson, Lester Smith and worst of all the hopeless Rhys Jones… Davies Uniacke looks very average too as does Powell Pepper.

2023 Best 23s: Does influx of stars mean a brutal call for Trent Cotchin at Tigerland?

Like it worked for the Suntan Kid 2005-2009?

2023 Best 23s: Does influx of stars mean a brutal call for Trent Cotchin at Tigerland?

Any danger of Marlion Pickett getting a game you reckon? Consistently good on the wing for the last three seasons. Agree with Hugo RS on one wing but it may come at the expense of Kam McIntosh if the latter starts slowing down this year.
Agree also its time for Gibcus and Tarrant may be the one to go but injury will hamper Gibcus this year at least initially so Tarrant stays in.
Jack Ross is on his last chance so will need to lift and not sure you will see both he and Sonsie in if injuries arent an issue. Fridge is another who may miss out unless he outperforms his previous two years – not sure youre taking that into account. He’s not in the best 23 at the minute.
Your interchange is not how they usually pick em these days – one fwd, one back and one mid with one utility/poss ruck. You would put Broad in there rather than Ross. Still interested to see how the sub goes. There’s a strong push to simply have 5 on the bench and this will open it up for Miller or Soldo as Nankervis cant ruck by himself these days, its not 2017 anymore.
Cotchin will play no question. His leadership and defensive skills are still outstanding although you will find he doesn’t play every game.
Hopper and Taranto are good ins, but lets not get carried away. Hopper may play the Josh Caddy role more than pure midfielder on an as needed basis.
Potential to have been top 4 last year with ridiculous games against NM, StK, Adelaide, GC, Froe, Sydney and Geelong where winning chances were squandered. Win four of those and we’re top 4 (in fact 2nd) but unlikely to have beaten Geelong come last Sat in Sept either way. Ultimately we finish where we deserve to be so perhaps bottom of top 8 is possible again this year.

2023 Best 23s: Does influx of stars mean a brutal call for Trent Cotchin at Tigerland?

100% he should retire now while on top and focus on white ball where it all started. Chances of him so doing may be a much lesser number. As for his replacement, none of Bancroft Harris or Renshaw inspire any great confidence tbh. Head is probably a better option than all but you don’t want to upset his form at 5. Its a shame for him and Australian cricket that Will Pucovski cant seem to get it together as slower paced India then a seaming England may have been an excellent grounding tour for him.

Warner’s epic 200 gives him chance to retire on top rather than risk sour ending in India or England
