It might not increase your speed of recycling but it increases your chance of keeping the ball – which is better fast ball or the opposition having the ball.

Nobody wants the attack penalised but the defence needs a chance to get the ball

My problem with the idea will be the pads that will be needed as well- gridiron pads are only there because of the helmets and i can’t see scrums getting formed with all that.
You dismiss the ‘seat belt theory’ although gridiron does have bigger hits for this reason and I would have to see a BIG difference between gridiron’s concussion rates and modern rugby before being considered and I don’t see you getting that evidence

I agree that a lot passages last less than 60 seconds and agree with you about diving in penalties by the attack (ok no one wants penalties against the attack but all the players on the ground is a huge blight on the game and has been for quite some time) but I am more asking whether that the 25 phases of mostly hitups should be a tactic or whether they should be forced to give up that possession after a certain time
