The VRC needs to fix-up the Melbourne Cup

Justin, as a handicap the art is getting into the field with the best weight possible to allow the horse to win the race. There is plenty of time to qualify horses (12 months) and trainers are aware of these. There is no moving of the goal posts by the VRC in determining the field. If you qualify you get in, the order of entry shifts as horses meet the clauses set out by the VRC. The VRC are to be congratulated with the standard of this race now as there were some ordinary handicappers who have won this race in the past who would not get a look in now. Hopefully from a breeding perspective the challenge provided by the international horse (not raiders) will inspire our owners to invest more in staying stock. I've always found it funny that Bart Cummings is held in such high regard as a trainer of Melbourne Cup / staying horses but few Australian trainers have followed his lead instead taking the softer option of chasing speed.

Andrew, Have to agree on the accent there is nothing more harrowing than walking down a street in Europe and amongst all the foreign voices comes an australian twang. Point take. However when it comes to the queens english you guys are murder one we are simply the accessories. Lightly raced mares are one thing but I wouldn't be building a breeding operation solely on females with five starts and NZ $10,000 prize money. Hennessy has a great horse on his hands, more importantly he has a potential stallion to replace Thorn Park.

Great article totally agree on the mix of speed, stamina and desire any race horse the possesses these qualities is capable of mixing in top company. Mb
