Stephen Milne charged with rape

Let me get on the record, straight up – I’m a firm believer in justice and when a crime is committed, there is usually a perpetrator and as such, there should follow a penalty. The flip side of this is that a person is innocent, until proven guilty. I’m a man and a St. Kilda supporter and what I will say, is if Stephen Milne did commit this crime he has a special place awaiting him – Hell, Saint or no Saint! My major axe to grind has to be with the Victorian Police – are these guys Keystone Cops or something? Honestly, this is just farcical that this crime happened 9 years ago and now they are having another crack - absolutely incredible! I have got to say that I feel for the victim and also for the proposed perpetrator. This has had to be 9 years of sheer torment. Can we expect them to re-open Squizzy Taylor’s alleged crimes next week??? On a final note - totally agree with Shmick. Let's let it sort itself out over however long it takes the Vic cops to reach decision.

Football public stupid when it comes to free kicks

Not sure what you're trying to say here Nathan - the AFL website is there for you to check the stats if you have to. West Coast had 14 more handballs and one more kick for the game. Tackles as mentioned and free kick count as stated. Wasn't so much St. Kilda tiring, according to those stats, especially if as you say, the West Coast boys "were ahead in every statistical indicator, bar tackles", at each break. More likely, I think it was rather than continuing to let the "game flow" as they had done for the first 3 and a half quarters, the umpires somehow found it in themselves to pick out a few rather dubious decisions and change the course of the game. We expect to get shagged (due to the influence of the crowd) in Perth, by the umpires. But at home, in a game we had every right to win is most galling.

Football public stupid when it comes to free kicks

The issue here is the number of rules and the little parts of a rule that make up the basis of the decision. Everything on AFL playing field happens so fast. How does the umpire, in the matter of a split second work out if the player being tackled firstly had taken possession properly, secondly the tackle was legitimate (not high or low and sufficient to be considered a tackle) if the player being tackled had some form of prior opportunity to dispose of the ball and if it does come out, whether they have disposed of the ball correctly by hand or foot, then judge if the tackle lingered a little too long and finally, if the ball falls to the side he wants to pay the free kick too, is there an advantage in letting the play continue? Perhaps the rules need to be “reduced” back to a more manageable level, for everyone’s sake – players, umpires, spectators, alike. Each year the rules committee tinker with this and that and trial something else. You only have to look at the “sliding rule” this year and the “1m separation at ruck contests”, plus the “deliberate out of bounds” rules to know we are over complicating things for the umpires. On the other hand, if you have 3 blokes running around for 4 quarters and they pay 17 free kicks for the night, that equates to say 6 decisions each – or 1.5 per quarter, from each umpire. Good money for not doing a whole lot, other than being abused. The final point is, as has been touched on, the imbalance of free kicks sometimes created by a side dominating possession and being first to the ball. This is a given. The bewildering fact is when the possession count is relatively even and an imbalance exists. Even more critical, is the scoreboard impact of the free kicks and other little penalties that go un-noticed. The other day, watching the St. Kilda v West Coast game, which the Saints controlled for large periods (even possession count, but 74 tackles to St.Kilda and 40 for West Coast) the game ultimately is decided by a few late free kicks in the Eagles favour – final tally 22 to 14. The issue here is that the Eagles got 4 of their goals directly from free kicks and possibly another 2 could have been attributed to 50m penalties. What did the Saints get from the umpires in this regard – nothing! That can be very difficult for a fan to swallow, let alone a champion player, in a milestone game, or a coach who has done everything right. Ultimately, if this keeps happening to one side, more than another, what do you do as a spectator? Jump the fence? If you love the game more than a particular club – maybe! Then as Cameron points out, Mick is the master of mis-direction. Scott Watters goes to his press conference and says virtually nothing – as the Saints always do – about the umpiring. Yet Mick is so aggrieved at his sides loss and the terrible job the umpires did, he feels he has to speak out publicly. Wonder who really is getting the feathery end of the pineapple???
