After all that success weren’t the Hawks still shot financially at the end of ’96? They nearly merged…

AFL financial reports highlight wealth divide

I wonder if you would classify the Roos as a straggler or a battler on those numbers? Either way they have a massive amount of ground to make up. I suppose they’re safe until the end of the current TV rights deal. But surely if they haven’t made significant steps forward by then I’d be cranking up the ‘Tassie it’s time’ campaign again if I lived down south. When does the Hawks deal run out down there?

AFL financial reports highlight wealth divide

I wonder if clubs had the opportunity to exercise an option in the last year of their current coach’s contract and Micky Malthouse was available – how many would pull the trigger?

In defence of Ross Lyon

Not a big fan of the “greater chance of success” being at Melbourne. A million draft picks and salary cap concessions tend to make me think that GWS might go alright too. Anyone who uses the “chance to play in a premiership” line is grasping at straws. All Scully needs to think is when I’m 31, not quite at my peak and want to play one more year (a la Doug Hawkins, Russ Robertson, Cornes) will my club let me? Of course not. Surely loyalty is a two way street…

Huge Scully contract a big risk for GWS

I’ve read some fantastic research on the origins of Aussie Rules, the author Goeff Blainey did an incredible job but still could only put forward a solid argument: That Aussie Rules evolved on it’s own (of course not without some influences).

So I wonder where the “Aussie Rules originated in Ireland” facts are? A 2011 comparison of both codes on YouTube I suspect.

BTW Essendon’s first strip was Red and Black stripes, not the sash, and possibly (not as sure on this one) neither did Richmond.

Multicultural round comes at a good time

Redb, Gubby was pretty sure of himself, but what I got from the interview was that their ‘plan’ is to win the flag in 2015/16 which would be the 4th or 5th year. And he kind of stepped back and said something along the lines of “but plenty can happen in that time that is unforeseen.” A flicker of an out clause…

Realistically all clubs should have that plan. Can’t knock them for having one, Gubby came off as bit of a nob though.

The old Richmond boys are in about year 23 of their five year plan!

Can GWS outdo Gold Coast with uncontracted players?

Just a side note on comparisons of players as ‘workers’ and loyalty…

I have a few friends who are academics, they often take pay cuts to work under a well-known professor or perhaps at renown university or lab. I guess that equates to players staying put for premiership glory?

On the flip side I’ve seen some friends leave their research the loved so much for the big bucks of commercial work.

My point is it happens in real life also, I’d me more impressed with “loyalty” if GWS were top of the table flashing millions to players from the bottom clubs and they were refusing and staying put. The players are still thinking about their own best long-term interests, as they should – not sure that is 100% loyalty to a club.

Why do AFL players put such value on loyalty?

My source is an Essendon backed Nubrik video on the history of the Bombers from 1984. In it the narrator says that “as well as a new home Essendon had a new uniform, changing from black and red vertical stripes to a black jumper with red sash.”

Are AFL clubs devaluing their jumpers too much?

Define “Traditional” jumper because as I see it nearly all clubs wear different jumpers than those the team first ran out in when the club was formed – even Essendon if my memory serves me correct (didn’t they wear black and red vertical stripes and some point?)

As a Carlton man I HATE the new clash strip (I never thought I’d say it but I hope they go back to the white for 2012) but as it’s only a few times for the year I can live with it.

Poor form to attack Aboriginal Art on the jumper as disgraceful – I think it’s a great tribute. As a supporter I could probably handle a one-off sponsorship jumper deal (if the club needed it) every few years, a nice looking clash jersey (not LIGHT BLUE!) and a one-off tribute jersey every now and again.

As long as my boys are in Navy Blue for, say 20 out of 24 rounds I am happy. That’s just me.

The NHL has 16 of 30 teams make the playoffs – given once they qualify they have the same path (except home-ice advantage) of making the Stanley Cup. The 16th ranked team is well deserved of their place.

I don’t disagree that the 10th placed team is reaching far into the field – but a final 9 that reverts to the old top six system (that system doesn’t even make sense – 1 v 2 and 3 v 4 both winners go onto the 2nd Semi????). For me the chance to use the old top 5 system outweighed adding the extra team (or two) to the finals system.

Fairness won’t play a part anyway – it will be how much money the AFL can get out of extra finals. In that case a top ten fits the bill.

AFL needs to make it perfect 10 in 2012

Way out of my depth on the 150+ years of footy trivia! but I can see it is difficult to extract the ‘in between the lines’ info from 1870’s – anyone have recommendations on the early development of AFL in book form (for my research)?? I am currently writing a short history of my international footy club and have seen on the (very little) information I have read about the early era of Aussie Rules it mirrors some of what we go through.

IMO – the GWS push is an experiment by the AFL to see how much they can influence a region in the ways of Aussie Rules (hence the grassroots up approach), it’s not just about GWS, and I believe they are in for the long haul, because if GWS fails, it won’t be seen as a GWS failure, it would be seen as an AFL failure.

If the AFL have the cash to spend on further development of the game why not? Why doesn’t Rugby do the same???

AFL talking the wrong language to Sydney

Dare say the AFL doesn’t expect to see the AFL-haters at GWS games, and a grass-roots program will give birth to a next generation of kids that don’t have that backward mentality – they’ll be Aussie Rules fans AND Rugby fans. What’s the harm in that??

Magpies to be nesting with Giants in 2012?

At least the Gold Coast kept a lid on things to make it easier for their ‘secret’ recruits – Sheeds has taken a different approach.
