too early to talk contenders?

… last year I had us just on edge of 8 – 2014 .. sneak in top 8 then top 4 2015- ready to challenge in 2016.

We got ahead of expectations last year.

If we can beat geelong or hawthorn we will be contenders IMHO

Are Port Adelaide contenders?

He has time on his side as we are a developing team and he can develop with it and Ken sees something in him, but eventually he needs to kick a few … not necessarily a bag but 2-3 and be a presence up forward. Hwaks have a good backline and midfioeld so it mat not be this week but with the Hoff out he should get his chnce.

Butcher's time to rise for the Power

a big man to help Shultz, read: Johnny Butcher … I like

good wrap Ben – snuck some stats in? 🙂

Power loss hides brilliant performances

due process … as in waiting for the whole ASDA report to come out!

The petition in my opinion is ridiculous!

Watson? More like Watsoff about Jobe

I’m thinking I’ve read this article before … it was on afl.com.au with headline … Upset of the year: Port’s powerful statement

I read the writer’s name – it was the same – Steve Larkin … doh!

Good work Steve – you missed the Cornes/Hannebury match up but was tops otherwise!

Port relevant again after downing Swans

agreed there Franko … if people downplay the efforts – discredit both teams, IMO.

Port relevant again after downing Swans

Footy park was renowned for good drainage for many years but recently – yea its not good is it?

Port relevant again after downing Swans

why not? – 3 YEARS of shite football … we WILL get excited … thanks.

A few years before we can be consistent against top sides – I accept that

Port relevant again after downing Swans

I agree, Swans weren’t poor … if people say that its downplaying both teams efforts in trying conditions! .. both teams were hard at it – Port’s pressure was telling and their improved fitness. Port shut down Hannebury with Kane Cornes-The writer has overlooked this key match up.

Goodes injury and the bye momentum loss was a factor I think.

Port relevant again after downing Swans

I agree Tim … 2nd/3rd year is the key …

Port’s Chad Winguard, debut last year is handling 2nd really well in 2013!

Are the 2013 debutantes going to be the best ever crop?

Good article – some emerging talent for sure … at almost every team, too!

Are the 2013 debutantes going to be the best ever crop?

yep agree – we are well away from matching with Swans or Collingwood. Its games like Bulldogs that we lost and Saints and Bris who are rebuilding like us shows where we are at now.

Port Adelaide's make-or-break month begins

I’ll say some positives re GWS and the western Sydney region …

There was about 6 kids teams playing little league from local clubs/schools so that’s say 100+ kids with parents/guardians at the game…had jumping castles and handball activities all day behind the stands … after match kick to kick on oval and hundreds of kids went on … if you didn’t have a footy $10 for a good one!

Support for AFL is building so if the kids keep going and the parents do, too … a good thing but you have a low base crowd to start…It’s a long term thing I guess and GWS aren’t leaving the comp anytime soon.

I still think 2018 for a flag is a bit out there!

they need a marque player like Suns got wIth GAblett jnr … Buddy wold be ideal

Four reasons why GWS must chase Lance Franklin

he only did that in recent years I think … bt I was frustrating -he did it this season in Darwin game it was If I’m recalling correctly?

Tredders this week said Kane’s tagging was the benchmark – ahead of his time. His strength was thst he went to the play with his tagged player and got the ball or got involved in the play.

Kane Cornes a true Port Adelaide champion

his backwards play was a negative point but the team had no game plan and Dom and Kane often were guilty of holding onto the ball then going sideways or backwards

Kane Cornes a true Port Adelaide champion

thanks Ben

Kane Cornes a true Port Adelaide champion

good write up Ben … Jakie and Chads are going to combine well for many years!

Wonderful Wingard continues to fly

good article Ben … I endorse Kerry’s comments

Brad Ebert deserves more recognition

I’m with Franko…

Port Adelaide Football Club fathers have their kids play at Port Adelaide Football Club, the same club!!!!

Crows can have the others!

Funny Crow fans putting shite this week on Kane breaking the games record – saying he’s useless etc … bet they wished they had him …. Incidentally in both years Crows had draft picks before Port so both Cornes could have gone to West Lakes not Alberton!

Brad Ebert deserves more recognition

As a Port fan I say – good review of the season so far … yep if you told me at the start we would be 5-5 at the break I woulkda said “I’ll take that”. The last 5 weeks disappointing … competitive against Geelong after giving them a 9 goal head start!

The Bulldogs game is the one that got away. We finally got away to a good first quarter start -led at half time then faded. The loss of Trengove and Pittard hurt our defence in many ways – height and pace gone plus we have had to move Ebert back there when he was damaging in mids in the first moth. Hombsch has come in so Ebert can get more midfield time, now.

Two players who were flying in the first month, Westhoff and Hartlett nedd to lift after a quieter few weeks in our losses. Settling on a ruckman is the key, too. All three we have used Redden, Lobbe and Renouf have been serviceable but none have an all-round game yet. Lobbe had a good SANFL performance last week with good hit out and disposal stats so may come back in this week v GWS.

AFL bye round provides time to review performance

yes – only the most ‘die hard fan’ believed finals would happen – tho after a 5-0 start we all thought ‘could we???’

Ken and Co have to dig us out of the shite we have been in for the past 4 years so its a start of the journey back to finals for us. Realistically 2015 we will be in finals… need 2-3 years of list turnover with a new coach to get his ideal team together then you top it up for a tilt at the flag!

Can Port Adelaide restore the power?

And Port Adelaide Magpies will not have any shadow or links with Port Power, totally separate entities. They are already, but bringing back the AFL reserves will solidify this completely .

… strange comment that – the links are being increased with One Club … after years of division and being separate?

Are you sure an AFL reserves comp is planned tho … talk in SA is getting both AFL teams in the SANFL comp … Port Adelaide have Magpies – Crows will either form a tenth team or link to another SANFL club as their ‘reserves’ team.

Can Port Adelaide restore the power?

good call – did u bet on these two making the final?

Is the Thunder fried?

Great article!

The AFL and NRL's lessons of irony round

Yes, David was … recognised as the first Indigenous Australian to play in the SANFL and the first Tiwi Islander to successfully play in a southern football league. I saw him play in Adelaide for South Adelaide when I was a pup. A tall loping ruckman/CHF – unlike most indigenous these days. Nicknamed “Soapy” following the publication of a photograph showing him lathered in soap in a bath. David was killed in a car accident in 1978 on Bathurst Island.

Stephen Michael in WAFL in 1970/1980s was a great indigenous player – many VFL clubs tried to lure him east…without success.

He was a strong, high leaping ruckman – winning the Sandover Medal in 1980 & 1981. His 37 votes in 1981 (with nine best-on-grounds and receiving votes in 15 of the 21 games played) was a record tally under the 3-2-1 voting system in place at the time. He represented WA in State of Origin on 17 occasions, captaining the side 3 times. In 1983 he won the Simpson Medal for the best player in the WA vs SA game and the Tassie Medal as Best State of Origin player and was named captain in the 1983 All-Australian Team. He won South Fremantle’s fairest and best in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 & 1983.

*****************

In 1995 he was named as an inaugural member of the Fremantle Football Hall of Legends. In 1999, he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. In 2005 he was named at CHF in the AFL Indigenous Team of the Century and in 2009 he was named in the ruck and captain of the South Fremantle Football Club’s Indigenous Team of the Century.
