strikeforce wise … Ibini no doubt changed the game when he came on against GCU. Whether he could have that effect yet from a starting berth i’m not sure. Much easier to impact a stale performance and make an impression off the bench. I’d worry he’d get lost in the malaise a little just now if he started.
Exciting talent no doubt … even my 7yo nephew switched his attention from ‘chair surfing’ his seat at Bluetongue when Bernie came on!

Why Mariners are their own worst enemy

well re Paartalu … i’d take him over someone at a second division Italian club or a mediocre Turkish team. No disrespect to the other DM options!
But the mentality that goes with being a player at a leading club in any league (even an emerging one like ours) versus an also-ran in Europe… There’s Europe and then there’s Europe, it ain’t all equal. Well i think that merits some discussion as the camp has provoked.
Even if the comparisons to Xavi are a little ambitious … but hey nothin wrong with a *little* of that at least! Like u say things can veer too far to self-defeatism sometimes.

Socceroos still have to call Europe home

yeah he was ahead of both Edwards and Rossi coming out of that corner … but when he went down they had nowhere else to go but his bike then into him. The crash/fall was not a major one just in a bad spot as bikes behind were accelerating.

my first thought was that he’d passed out of had a seizure by the way he held on and looked limp as he slid across even before being hit. Was an odd looking fall from the video and still images i’ve seen.

Stoner shocked by deadly MotoGP crash

he just dropped the front coming out of a right hand turn, i’m not sure of the conditions but sepang can be humid so maybe it was the surface. Or lack of tyre temps… it was early race.

feel sorry for rossi and edwards, they literally rode right over the guy. 🙁

still gutted at the news…

Stoner shocked by deadly MotoGP crash

ah yes ‘grand finals’ lol … barely even a poor man’s Cup title let alone the League Premiership! 🙂

Turning the pressure up on Melbourne ahead of Derby

some good teams getting about in that league … setanta were showing it a season or two back, hope it makes a return. And the money isn’t limited to the capital city clubs… good for the competitiveness factor. Though Ankhi are basing their squad there for the medium term.
Wonder if the ’18 world cup will do for them what ’06 did for bundesliga.

European Super League an inevitability

with any luck the ‘austerity’ trend might spread to the elite football scene soon enough … thru necessity most likely!

European Super League an inevitability

yeah i prefer they use the ‘socialist-style’ restraints as a cap on costs at the top end, rather than contriving some sort of equality through the pack. Bigger cities should have bigger clubs … smaller and mid sized cities the opportunity to prove themselves and use the disparity as a motivating factor. Germany is a good example with their use (i think) of wage costs as a percentage to revenue (?).

By using an in-between approach of tinkering with the system rather than going completely to the other end of the scale … embracing this full-blown Euro league model … they can improve or renovate the system rather than completely knocking it down. It ain’t completely broke i don’t think.

The A-League system i like … when u factor in marquees and ASAs plus the potential to only spend 80pc of the cap … as i think it was Arnie pointing out the other day the Mariners only spend maybe 60pc of what MV or SFC would this season. All we need is a second division to end the ‘closed shop’ mentality that i think is the antithesis of a truly sporting league structure.

European Super League an inevitability

boos for a euro super league from me too … yes there are predictable leagues but also ones like the Bundesliga with interest at all points of the table. Its just reason to do things better not to abandon national leagues for a weekly euro league. It would gut football at the level below euro … and then u really just will end up with a ‘closed shop’ where the big teams want to protect their status and let no one new in.
boooooooo…. 🙂

European Super League an inevitability

i agree Bondy, its worth doing something for its own purpose and effect on the game, nothing else.

the issue i have with ‘diving’ is with the most exaggerated form. There are also instances where players ‘make the most’ of a knock or push to get a free kick in a key area or time in the game. I don’t mind that at all, provided it is a player on the team i’m supporting! This attitude is not exclusive to football lets be real here … it applies in all sports to varying degrees.

What do you think of Sydney FC's anti-diving stance?

good points, its good to get some perspective and gosh even a bit of positivity for where we are in the world of football, all things considered we do pretty well.

if we can do all this with a piecemeal development system, league season running to two-thirds of our competing nations, a mix of fringe and a few top level euro players … where could we end up when our system is another 20 years down the line?

A look at the steady rise of the Socceroos

haha brilliant addition to the left column! 🙂

A-League VII: All roads lead to Victory

meh, gimme a league game as season opener 😛

A-League All Stars game is a great idea

an australia cup competition would be even better… what happened to that one?

i don’t mind an A-L v J-L game as a one off maybe for charity, dunno if it’d work every year from their end or ours. I would rather they pushed the Asia Champions League a little more… its a unique thing for Aussie sport, yes its an AFC comp but still… we have this great thing there already. ‘All-Stars’ is pure gimmick in comparison.

A-League All Stars game is a great idea

Ferguson? I guess that also applied last year tho 🙂

Which A-League coach is under the most pressure?

i agree allstar games (and even some internationals) are not great to watch in football as they are a group new to each other. Cohesion just can’t be built to any useful level so quickly in football. Maybe there’s some marketing benefit to it for new fans, personally i wouldn’t watch it. I thought tours by overseas teams vs A-L sides would serve a similar purpose.

A-League All Stars game is a great idea

cheers james, nice read mate

Brisbane Roar's legacy looking good

they’re just ‘tapering’ for the season start 🙂

on NZ, i think a second team would be great. I’m hoping they look to have a lower entry point for future A-League expansion. Say a two division A-League where the second tier only needs to run maybe sub 50pc of the top tier wage cap. Would allow them to expand to regional areas and even see existing semi-pro sides merging to bid for entry like RedOrDead is suggesting here. Expansion really needs the option of a lower cost base … at present all sides run 80pc or so (+ marquees) of the salary cap … only one cost of course but a biggie.

Mariners go down 3-1 to Auckland City

Fuss the numbskulls only have a certain number of weeks to work with. At one end, the push for this October start has tightened the schedule and at the other Fox don’t want the season overlapping too far into their other properties. The alternative was more midweek games which were not well received.

The only solution is extending the season which given the constraints of the Fox deal can only happen once its renewed i’d assume. Nine months is plenty of time for a league season, cup weekends, international dates etc. Six months seasons are frustrating on so many levels…

A lack of football culture let this happen i’d agree though as far as professionalism goes, i guess they didn’t have other suitors lining up to pay for A-League games on TV. So had to accept the limitations of squeezing into the Fox scheduling.

Socceroos coach wants change from FFA

we can’t have a six month season AND all the breaks for international fixtures as well … hope this adds to the push for a longer season.

Socceroos coach wants change from FFA

my pick for another league Premiership … not getting into picking cup/GF winners lol! Across the whole season though…
Solid squad which – while not seeing any pre-season games – look to have the players to be very tough in the middle. I think having such good finishers they can overcome the loss of Flores. Who wouldn’t want van Dijk, legend. Plus with Caravella coming in … really liked that guy at GC last year.

A-League season preview: Adelaide

agree with Wade here, though yeah let the coach announce the squad. I like how BB shifted it across to the coach, where the decision should be.
FIFA windows for the A-L somewhere off in the future lets hope! Probably next TV deal once they can extend the season by padding it out with these dates and Cup weekends.

Osieck to make call on Kewell, Emerton

Vidmar may be a tactically limited coach but i’d say thats a reason he SHOULD have this job. Its a youth age national team, perfect place for mistakes under the pressure of qualifiers. And if they fail, big deal, we don’t make this youth age tournament. No biggie. But in the meantime a developing young Aussie coach is learning something in an AFC qualification process. (This ain’t Oceania, no more direct easy lines to these tourneys.)

Rusty Olyroos fortunate to draw against impressive UAE

true yeah, Levchenko looks good, has the size and experience. Is he playing defensive mid or CB? Filling in for Boogaard at the back maybe…
(sorry for ‘rAdelaide-ing up’ an MV article lol)

Great attacking line-up could usher in season of Victory

line ball for me! caravella, dilevski, mckain, vidosic, djite… great additions
purely attacking wise MV maybe with HK, Rojas, Solarzano
