The structure and content of the article was first class. I feel as though you’re being a touch harsh on Cook however. For one, he walked into a position as captain that is limited in personal modifications by what many call a “robotic” team plan. Secondly, I have no doubt that Cook would’ve declared before the fourth morning too, and I believe he would’ve been more likely than Clarke to do so, only because England would’ve been smart enough to know the forecast and realise their own bowlers struggles so far on the tour, and England as a side focus on the ‘bottom-line’ short-term success better than any other nation in International Cricket (a partial reason for their current struggles), which means something like David Warner’s century wouldn’t have been mentioned nor considered, compared to Clarke admitting he had to “wrestle” over the decision.
But generally a really well-rounded argument and piece that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Clarke showing captain Cook the way
Some good points:
– I don’t doubt that one bit
– Time will tell. There are still moments throughout the test when the odd ball sways, and right now he is ‘on song’. The real test is still to come.
– A valid point, but wasn’t that more of a consequence due to his inability to land the ball in good areas (Shortened run-up for example)
– Oh how I wish the selector’s would see it that way. Simply it doesn’t matter what their facts are, Starc definitely would’ve got the nod. But in all honesty i’ve never been a fan of Starc, so it’s all worked out well in the end.

Great article, and your point at the end in regards to strength of the domestic system compared to youth vying for spots is 100% correct I believe.
Tough one for CA to manage though without forcing the issue. It’ll be interesting to watch progress throughout the coming seasons. But again, well written.
Australian cricket struggling to balance youth and experience
Thanks Jack. You should definitely write it, so much you could go into. Will be a good read!
Cricket Australia management is letting down players and fans
A point that I tried to apply in the context of this series, sorry if it was conveyed in a different manner.
This Ashes series defies logic and history
Ryan that was a very logical article, about time somebody wrote something like this with a bit of sense.
Was I too hard on Mitchell Pearce?
Rob G steady on, criticise him sure but that statement is quite simply bordering on stupidity.
Was I too hard on Mitchell Pearce?
Generally Farah isn’t far off Smith, but with Dugan I agree with you. Hayne and Stewart though definetly do deserve to be, and this article wasn’t referring to Dugan in any way.
Numbers one and nine to decide State of Origin Game 3
Did you watch Origin 2 Paul? If they’re on the decline, then NSW are in a lot of trouble.
Numbers one and nine to decide State of Origin Game 3
You’ve got to be careful with this argument, for however good it seems now, it was only a few months ago under Lehmann’s watch that Phil Hughes ended up scoring 81n.o. on a pitch that left Australia 9-121 at one point. So what do they do, after the next test, admittedly with twin failures (although one wasn’t even out), he finds himself as a waterboy in England. Now he’s knocking 100’s every game in Sheffield Shield, averaging roughly 70, and just looking on from a distance. Talk about a waste. As Ponting said “I don’t know why they keep dropping him cause he just keeps making runs and coming back”.
Just one example under the Lehmann regime, and I pray that it doesn’t become a trend.
Smith ought to thank Boof for his ton
