I look forward to your next cricket related article

How to face Mitchell: a guide for novices

@soapit Thanks for the only positive comment on here. Much appreciated.

In reply to the rest of all the negative comments on this post I am still a current player and have actually faced bowling machines up to 100mph both in-swing and out-swing. I am not one of the living room commentators infact I am a level 3 cricket coach, who still plays cricket at an extremely high level and face bowlers that bowl around 145kph regularly.

So this article is not just me being bored with nothing to do but rather taking the time to analyse how the successful players actually coped with Johnson and what they had in common.

If this article doesn’t suit your taste i am sorry but I am sure there are people out there that find this information useful.

Sorry there “GURU” maybe you should man up and face him.

@SuperEel22 I won’t back down to the challenge and won’t end up like Piers Morgan did against Brett Lee.

Hopefully you’ll be at the non strikers end mate. Il be getting off strike pretty quickly.

You sound like an international player yourself. Good on ya mate!!

I know he gives out a lot does Anderson pity he only bowls at 135kph.

The best players trigger early so that they can set themselves before the ball is released. Good solid setup = less foot movement just weight through the ball

OK then!

They both Left Handers with poor techniques and they were found out every innings.

@Simoc – Who are you referring to? I haven’t mentioned anything about India’s pace attack at all. I just thing they need Ashwin for the next test and I think we will see a difference.

The lack of quality spinners will affect the Test series in South Africa

@ChrisB – Glad you mention spin there not sure if you have read what has been said about the spinners. The main discussion is about the ball spinning incase you were wondering.

Unlike most people I am not a lounge commentator, I still play the game in fact. Robin is actually a personal friend of mine and I wasn’t bad mouthing him I am just stating facts and I am sure if he could have more variation he would love it, I know his been working on a few so lets see if he brings it out this series.

@Nick – Murali, Saqlain, Harbhajan, Ashwin, Narine, Ajmal these are all off spin bowlers who turn the ball both ways. I would much rather face Peterson, Lyon, Swann, Vettori or Harris. Wouldnt you?

Warne might not have bowled his googly often but he had his stock ball which he controlled and could turn different amounts. He had a top spinner, a flipper and a slider. That is more than enough armory dont you think?

I do agree that flight, drift, dip and control is key to a spinner but common if you dont turn the ball you wont have any purchase off the wicket. You are more likely to be defensive and let the batters make mistakes rather than get him out with pure skill ie Shane Warnes first ever test wicket. That’s called spin where I come from.

@DCNZ – Im glad I am on the same page as the great Martin Crowe.

@Sideline – The same thing was said about Nathan Hauritz who then just slipped under the radar after a few bad games. I am not saying Muirhead should get picked now I am saying he should be nurtured so when he is mentally and physically ready and wont be a one hit wonder.

@Jason – You a Marsh hater arent you. Just like you think I hate spinners I now know for a fact you hate Shaun Marsh.

Dilemma lies ahead for the Australian Test selectors

@Jason – AHMED??? where is he? Im sure his happy his an Australian citizen now. I havent seen him play all summer. I guess the same thing happened to Imran Tahir. They had all the fuss about them but when they were selected couldnt produce the goods.

The lack of quality spinners will affect the Test series in South Africa

@Gr8rWeStr – Some good research done there. Well maybe now you can go research who took the wickets. I would say 90% would be seam bowlers. So if both teams play an all seam attack then that would be great. Pity Watson is injured so Lyon would have to get dropped but on the other hand SA will play Parnell so they will have 4 quicks and a lower order batter who could bowl spin if needed in Peterson.

@Dalgety – Glad we agree that 7 tests doesnt really mean anything in this day and age.

The lack of quality spinners will affect the Test series in South Africa

Both teams have a massive major issue. SA losing Kallis and AUS losing Watson this makes for a really interesting test. SA will pick Wayne Parnell and I think AUS would need a fourth seamer at Centurion, who they select will be key as they wouldn’t want to weaken their batting line up.

I would share a few overs between Smith and Clarke but four quicks will be crucial. If only Henriques was in the squad???

SA Line up:
Smith
Petersen
Amla
Du Plessis
De Villiers
Duminy
Parnell
Peterson
Philander
Morkel
Steyn

Dilemma lies ahead for the Australian Test selectors

@Nick – The fact you are saying St Georges if a quick wicket is making me wonder if you really know SA conditions. During the 2003 WC The Aussies complained after every match about how slow and low it was. Brett Lee bowled a ball at 160kmh and it was taking at ankle height.

You said India had a weak bowling attack they sure proved you wrong by bowing NZ out for 105 in their second innings. I think their bowling plans to the kiwis were completely wrong. Not sure why they weren’t trying to bring them forward more. Bowling back of a length is just to easy on the wickets over here. Only player in the top order whose solid off the front foot is Kane Williamson.

@Pope – Pat Symcox played took 37 test wickets at an average of 47. Great?

The lack of quality spinners will affect the Test series in South Africa

@Andrew – by unorthodox I mean guys who can bowl the doosra and leg spinners will also fit into that category as SA are not producing any of them either.

I agree that spin bowling is not only about turn but just flight and drift can only get so far then you need some assistance of the deck to further confuse the batsman. Think Warne would have been effective if he never tunned the ball???

@Pope – Australian wickets are a lot more conducive to spin bowling compare to South Africa. Maybe thats why Shane Warne has so many wickets and SA hasnt produced one spinner of note.

I have actually played with and against Peterson and he is more a batting alrounder. You will see him save SA lower down the order.

@biltongbek – Newlands is a seamer friendly wicket not real pace and bounce like Centurion. Teams got rolled there because they prepare green seamers therefore both teams will be suited on bowling on it.

Also, I can remember a few test matches that were played in Port Elizabeth that ended on the third day.
