Raj is a lifelong Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Lions fan (and even managed to work for both for a bit). He realised he wasn't insightful enough to offer anything original in terms of game analysis so he writes about the intersection of business, money and sport instead.

But in the alternate scenario, without the foreign owners there’s probably not enough local cash to buy and maintain those clubs at the same standard.
Would fans be happier with local owners but a less competitive club locally and in Europe?

I’m fairly sure that after that incident most of England would have been happy to despatch the fleet down to the Falklands and Argentina again.
The biggest World Cup controversies of all time
Well put Andrew, it’s why deep down no one really wants perfect refs or results, it takes all the colour and conversations like this out of the game
The biggest World Cup controversies of all time
Apparently they still regard that defeat as still outweighing all the triumphs, it’s that big a scar on the national psyche.
The biggest World Cup controversies of all time
There was some commentary after the cup that Materazzi mentioned Zidane’s mother and some other unsavoury things to do with her, but they did come from Italian lip-readers reviewing the footage after the fact, you’re right though, the only thing Materazzi ever owned up to was the sisters shirt comment.
The biggest World Cup controversies of all time
Hahaha, I wonder what else people got away with before TV and 42 cameras covering every angle.
The biggest World Cup controversies of all time
You’re right Lee, that Germany-Austria collusion was one of the worst examples of a lack of sportsmanship in the modern era
The biggest World Cup controversies of all time
Hmmm, this seems oddly familiar.
Oh wait, perhaps because I put together an article saying the EXACT same thing two weeks ago (though hopefully with better research and writing), and got a great response from everyone on the site.
Pay close attention to my rankings from #3 to #1 and see if you can spot the similarities here…
I’ll leave it you you to judge Roarers:
Where should the NRL look to next for expansion?
I think our actual song is sung by a singer who did quite well out of X-Factor (that Channel 7 reality show) a few years back. It’s the girl who played Kylie Minogue in the INXS movie that came out a few months ago.
Australia hopping to win the World Cup of worst team slogans
That is one of the best things I’ve heard all week.
Also, in France the third “Hangover” movie was translated to the title “Very Bad Trip 3” because apparently the French don’t get hangovers.
Australia hopping to win the World Cup of worst team slogans
Good chance for some cross-promotion with VB too? Am I thinking of the right song Matthew?
Australia hopping to win the World Cup of worst team slogans
The “entire point” of the article was to have a bit of fun at the slogans and FIFA’s expense and point out some amusing lost in translations.
Of course, if you get more pleasure out of finding the errors, feel free to do so, whatever floats your boat!
P.S. You are absolutely right Raghu, it wasn’t the FFA but FIFA that gave us the Hopping into History line, it was an honest mistake on my part
Australia hopping to win the World Cup of worst team slogans
Thoroughly entertaining thread guys, well done to all involved haha
Australia hopping to win the World Cup of worst team slogans
Haha, cheers Patrick, much appreciated

He (or Rumsfeld, I’m not sure which) also called the French “Cheese eating surrender monkeys” at some point. Possibly the best country specific sledge ever.

How good is the crowd knowledge Hoy? I had no idea either, you learn something new every day, or in this case, two things

Cheers boys, both your comments are much appreciated. I agree, I’ve learnt heaps from the comments from people who are involved in the bids, or those guys and girls who live in the target areas like PNG and Perth, it’s the kind of thing that makes this site awesome.
Ranking the NRL expansion bids: Part II
81, much as I enjoy being told I have a hidden agenda by a bloke with a fake screen name, I can assure you none existed. I am happy to be given information and knowledge by better informed Roar readers and people on the ground, which you can see we have plenty of in this comments section with people like Jay and Anthony and Dogs of War.
You seem to forget that financial success is not the ONLY measure of club success. Melbourne are a success. They have one of the highest attendances in home and away games, have established a viable NRL franchise in Melbourne and a passionate supporter base.
As for my hidden agenda, you’re right, I’m being paid ridiculous amounts of money by the PNG bid to place them at number 1. You caught me.
Keep your conspiracy theories on the shelf mate, there’s a proper conversation happening here.

Interesting angle Brian, an afternoon game for the Perth locals would be a twilight game for the east coast, making it perfect for a Sunday fixture to add to the Ch 9 Sunday footy line up. And hopefully move the delayed 4pm game to a live match at the same time.
Ranking the NRL expansion bids: Part one
There’s links to each one below the name, except for the NZ ones which don’t seem to have a formal bid or site yet. Same goes in Part 2 of the article.
Ranking the NRL expansion bids: Part one
Definitely a joke, though given the amount of interest in league in the City of Churches maybe someone should look into it?

Haha, I feel like that even from there he might give Laurie Daley a headache

Really interesting stuff Dogs, do you reckon that “Australia first” folks might kick and scream about us weakening our comp by reserving spots for international players to help develop international league?
Ranking the NRL expansion bids: Part II
Interested to see how many Broncos fans would support the Brothers. I don’t think it’d have much effect in the younger age group who grew up with them but it seems those who remember watching the Brothers play might enjoy having them back as their number 1 club.

You’re 100% right, not just about cash, a longer term mindset and planning for the future also matter just as much (arguably more)
