UPDATED - Australia's First Ashes Test team - Smith, Agar in - Warner, Lyon out

I don’t know why he was dumbstruck. He was warned that any further infringements would result in a yellow and that’s what happened. The most unbelievable part of that was that Deans, in one of his final acts of monumental stupidity, didn’t hook Alexander until AFTER the yellow was dealt. Completely unbelievable stuff.

Alexander has been a great servant to the national side but, unfortunately, it’s time for someone else.

Wallabies: five things learned from Sydney

Unfortunately, most options I can think of were probably outlawed about 150 years ago

What should the Wallabies do with James O'Connor?

If not for the Kurtley Beale miracle try back in November against Wales, Link would’ve been coach before today. Deans relied way too long on flashes of brilliance from the likes of Beale. It won’t work all the time and it didn’t.

Ewen McKenzie to coach Wallabies, Deans sacked

And, hopefully, Ben Alexander will have played his last game for Australia

Ewen McKenzie to coach Wallabies, Deans sacked

Tough days ahead for Tahs fans. They won’t get their regular minimum quota from here in. Players will be picked in position, on form, compatability with game plan and combinations. Not reputation. Not x-factor discoverability. Not a wild punt. Not who’s dating coach’s daughter. Not who’s a good bloke. Not who’s been paid a massive top up to switch codes (or switch provinces). Not whose dad is on the ARU board. Form. Position. Combinations. Game plan.

JOC wasn’t helped by the jaw dropping replacement of CL with McCabe. Beale should have come on to 15 and Barnes to 12, or Beale to 10, JOC to 15 and Barnes to 12. Then again, the genesis of the problem was in picking a limited player like McCabe on a 5-3 bench. Another Deans howler.

SPIRO's Lions Diary: The Wallabies are down one but not out

BTW, the 2011 World Cup squad constituted of

Waratahs 11
Reds 10
Force 4
Brumbies 4
Rebels 1

So, even when the Reds win the flag, the Waratahs had more players. It happens year in, year out.

Leaked Wallaby lineup - fact or fiction?

You don’t think he displays bias in selections? Have you heard of Quade Cooper or have you been living on another planet??

Leaked Wallaby lineup - fact or fiction?

I’m sick of the provincial nonsense too, which is why I get sick of seeing an inordinate number of Waratahs selected year-in year-out. That in itself is provincial bias. Whenever there’s a lineball decision between two players you can almost guarantee that a Waratah will be selected.

Two cases in point: Gill has been playing better than Hooper. That’s an absolute fact. I’m not saying that Hooper isn’t a good player. He’s brilliant. It’s just that Gill is in better form and that form should be rewarded as such.

Simmons is a better option at lock because he’s a good lineout caller and a good jumping option. The lineout options are limited with all three of Palu, Horwill and Douglas in the pack. It will be easy for the Lions to predict the throw.

Then there’s the joke selections: Palu’s inclusion is breathtaking. It seems that there’s no situation in which the guy won’t be picked. Mowen should be at 8 and either McMeniman, Hodgson or Schatz at 6. Hell, I’d even have McCalman there. He’s at least shown some form that justifies selection.

Barnes should be on the bench, if anywhere. He’s not played at 15 all year. JOC or Mogg should be at 15, and Cooper or Toomua at 10.

As for Folau: I love how people say that Mogg should be “blooded” on the EOYT and at the same time can’t see the blatant hypocrisy in starting Folau. Folau is a brilliant player, no doubt, but his selection is a joke when guys like Mogg don’t even get a lookin.

Leaked Wallaby lineup - fact or fiction?

Typical side with 7 Tahs selected. At least 5 of those are questionable. 1 or 2 questionable selections is easy to swallow but 5 just reeks of bias. I don’t know why they just don’t rename the team the Wallatahs and be done with it.

“we’ve got one-eyed English, too, don’t worry”

You don’t say…

SPIRO's Lions Diary: Are the Lions serial 'cheaters'?

Funny how Australia can go, in one season, from “not having the cattle” to being an “experienced side”. Oh well, whatever makes Deans look good at any given point in time…

SPIRO: Wallabies experienced, All Blacks rebuilding

The mood was toxic. QC was simply telling it how it was.

Doesn't Robbie trust his own judgement?

“There is no evidence that that is happening”

Nonsense. Gill has already made noises about a move to Japan. There’s a reason why Hugh McMeniman went to Japan a few years ago – he couldn’t get any money because showboaters like Tuqiri were getting a million bucks a season. As for the rest, is it worth the risk?

“Firstly, he hasn’t been selected in the Australian team”

That’s what this article is about – selecting him in the Australian side. Duh. The idea that people should be picked on no more than a punt is just pure nonsense. Players need to be picked on form – not on a whim and certainly not how many headlines on Foxsports feature their name.

“Neville, Pyle, Hooper, Beale out with injury etc”

Beale isn’t out with injury – he’s on temporary leave – and will be back. Hooper, Pyle and Neville aren’t competing for the position of wing, so your rebuttal is nonsensical; they a jostling for contract money which has a completely different temporal context. Aside from that Hooper isn’t injured and, as far as I am aware, neither is Pyle. Massive fail there mate. If you’re going to comment on who should be in the Wallabies then maybe you should have a basic idea of player availability.

The history of rugby's territorial fans

That Sailor and Rogers ran out in the Wallabies jersey for the 2003 RUWC final while Latham and Roff sat on the bench still grates me. Parachuting these people in damages Australian rugby. It doesn’t strengthen it. Folau is a talent, no doubt but he simply has not done enough to justify selection. Australian fans should ne confident that their team is picked on merit, not hype. I don’t get why this is so difficult to comprehend for Folau’s cheer squad.

The history of rugby's territorial fans

Love how this forum has become a mass Waratahs love in because they had a win. You do realise that the Force beat the Cru last week? Odd things happen in rugby. Let’s see how the Tahs finish compared to the Brumbies and Reds

SPIRO: Bragging right for both Reds and Brumbies - and the Waratahs

You have got to be kidding me

SPIRO: Bragging right for both Reds and Brumbies - and the Waratahs

one good game and he gets into the Wallabies. he’s soooo awesome.

Folau stars as Waratahs beat Chiefs

Ooh look. The Tahs win a game and the groupies get all giddy and light headed…

There is no doubt Folau is a talented player, there is no doubt he’s improving, but I simply cannot see the justification in slotting him in ahead of Beale, JOC, Mogg or even Jono Lance.

Of course, the ARU justifying paying a mercenary $400K is more important than helping out struggling clubs, topping up the contracts of grass roots players and all that boring stuff. So unfortunately I do expect to see Folau parachuted into the Wallabies, so the ARU can not feel left out in a player poaching code war that only they seem to care about.
