Too big a penalty for a player to be sent off for a technical error like that. Need flexibility in the carding system to separate from these sorts of incidences from the straight out malicious acts.

A bad call no doubt but in fairness the advantage rule can be incredibly difficult to officiate. How many times has a certain goal/scoring opportunity been denied due to an overly cautious or oblivious umpire NOT giving advantage? Out of interest, my understanding of the rule is that an umpire can ‘cancel’ an advantage call (within reason) if they subsequently consider there was no advantage to the team via continuing play. Is this true?

Way to miss the point. Broad was entitled not to walk (it happened more than once) just as Carey was entitled to run out Bairstow. Broad getting all uppity at Carey for failing to adhere to the “spirit” of the game is beyond galling.

Have to agree on the Swans. The Eagles were beyond woeful. The thing that struck me the most were the Swan’s high long kicks in the corridor that were marked uncontested with an Eagle nowhere in sight. Given the tremendous rivalry the two teams had in the mid 2000s it isn’t terribly enjoyable watching a team get pulverized like that, even if it’s your team doing the pulverising.

The Swans ball use was also terrible yesterday. Too many handballs and of poor quality (down at people’s feet, out of reach or loopy ones that invite the opposition to intercept and/or poleax the receiving player). They look a shadow of the team they were last year and have already lost as many matches this year as they did in the entirety of the 2022 H&A season. Losing all three of the tall defenders would hurt any team, but it has absolutely savaged the Swans.

My understanding of the rules is that for kicks for goal after the siren, players on the attacking team are not allowed to impede the defenders whatever. They basically have to be statues in such a scenario. So if the Swans had managed to shepherd the ball through then the goal should be declared invalid regardless.

Yes quota system in place (6 non-whites, of which 2 must be black) and appears to be more strictly enforced since 2016. Even with a quota system, poor technical ability shouldn’t be a major issue at the elite level. The fact that it appears to be a major issue across many of the top order batsman speak to poor coaching and development.

Unsurprising given how poor the technique is of many the SA batters. Amazed they were able to make it into their test side. SA are hardly minnows.
On a broader note, I am very concerned about the state of test cricket, I don’t want a situation where the Aussies are only playing against India and England.

Ethical investing/sponsorship is a total moral minefield. If energy companies are considered a no go zone, then scrutiny should also be applied to gambling, alcohol and fast food sponsorship. Of course if one were to exclude all of the above, the sponsorship pool is significantly shallower and likely to lead to a reduction in the amount being offered for sponsorship. Are clubs and players prepared to accept lower pay for the greater good?

McDonald will play. He showed enough in the PF and there is no one banging on the door to take his spot. They key question is if Reid is ruled out, who takes his place? A difficult question but I would roll the dice of Hayden McLean. He is the biggest body and played a great game against the Cats last year. If they pick Armaty, I am worried about him going missing and being bullied out of contests. Whichever combo they go with, the Swans are going to need at least one of them to perform a cameo as per Mitch Morton in 2012.
A grand final that's on for young (Sydney) and old (Geelong)
To give Richmond their due credit, they played well and brought significant pressure and intensity.
However, the Swans put themselves under pressure by repeatedly missing targets and butchering the footy under little to no pressure.
Structurally, while their midfield is strong, their defensive depth is suspect particulalry as Rampe is likely to miss up to a month. If Tom McCartin also goes down, their defensive looks extremely vulnerable.
The forward line is ok, but it could do with another small forward to crumb off the tall guys and apply heat in the D 50 at ground level. Tackles inside 50 was by far most the glaring differnential between the two sides on the weekend.
McDonald and Amartney show promise as talls but are useless at ground level, Will Hayward and Robbie Fox are in-between players who can get lost and Papley is a dangerous goal scorer but not renowned for his defensive pressure.
They are good enough to match it with the best but not convinced they have what is takes structurally to win the flag.
