Sometimes being away from the family is better for them depending on the individual circumstances.

The mystery and tragedy of Andrew Krakouer

Time for Mitch Cooper to step up.

Captain Coach on debut.

If he doesn’t get 3 points Clive should tear up his contract.

What's to be done with Gold Coast United?

I don’t know his full CV but a couple of years ago there was an SBS story about some national youth comp and Tony Vidmar’s baby reds (May have been South Australian sport institute) or such won the special award for combining style and results.

The details are a bit fuzzy for mine but he has definitely been coaching and the story gave a good impression of him..

The rise, and rise, of the Australian football coach

I don’t feel the urge to unravel the mystery. It was an interesting article though.

I really love redemption stories so hope he comes back.

The mystery and tragedy of Andrew Krakouer

I think they had a 5 year contract but the talk of taking the show on the road suggests they can get out of it.

If they could get out of I think spending a few $$$ to bring one of the QRL venues up to standard would be the way to go.
It wouldn’t take much of an investment as QRL matches are televised but with much less cameras than a regular A league game and I doubt Fox are in love with broadcasting from skilled park.

For the fans tickets would be cheaper, for Clive he wouldn’t be losing a lot of money and for TV there would be a more interesting background.

When he stops losing bucket loads of money each week Clive would hopefully calm down and let the team start acting like a long term proposition.

Of course if labour lose the state election I think things would look a lot rosier for GCU.

What's to be done with Gold Coast United?

I wouldn’t.

This club always treats its fans like **** which is why they don’t have many.

All Clive brings to the table is a bit of money and not enough to justify the negatives.

The only part he really spent money on was player salaries and he doesn’t even do that now. I understand he still loses quite a bit due to the stadium deal (even when capped), take that out of the equation and he really is running the minimalist model with occasional feats of grandeur which he ruins soon after. Not even a smart one as a fair few of those young players will leave for free rather than a transfer fee.

What's to be done with Gold Coast United?

Anything that doesn’t involve Stadiums Australia.

Until they get out of the rental agreement with skilled park there is no turning them around.

I think your solution of more FFA trained coaches is spot on.

Pretty much all the countries which punch above their weight consistently in football have a large ratio of coaches.

FFA needs to remain in the driving seat

Great piece Ben.

Some pretty funny comments too.

How to strike the A-League's funny bone

I said earlier that the value wasn’t in just converting FTA games to a mobile device.

Telstra are on the money with that app because convenience is a huge factor and pricing looks good (which surprised me).

I think Optus position in relation to showing the FTA content is fair enough butthat is where I draw the lie. If they wanted the other content they should have paid for it.

I hope this is a winner and Optus see the light and start properly taking advantage of their A league license.

The fact Ferguson and Ferdinand admitted Evra was wrong to do that goes a long way.

Dalglish initially kept supporting his man though, which isn’t the worst thing to do but means that Suarez actions are the story.

Luis Suarez has brought shame on English football

Can’t help we are just being set up for a tea commercial starring both Suarez and Evra, similar to the Cathy Freeman vs Crazy old codger one.

Suarez saga shows it's time to give handshake the flick

Sometimes the hand shakes are a bit of a farce but at least that is a small bastige of decency.

Without the hand shake then Evra would never have got the opportunity to extend his hand/ All the focus has been on Suarez rejecting it but that Evra offered it is a good story.

Phew, for a minute there I thought we wouldn’t get to talk about Melbourne Victory today 🙂

I quite liked this one though, good article.

I think I will be cheering on Magilton’s team tonight and hope they take some points of the Mariners.

Melbourne derby reveals tale of two journeys

One of those 5 matches was a mid week game as well which means there is not much a coach can do in that week as it is full of travel and you have to use a lighter training schedule.

The latest Les Murray blog has a veiled go at Magilton too…. and finishes with Les plumping for Troussier a coach that just got relegated from the CSL.

According to Ipswich fans he did keep get that team playing good football so he he does have the runs on the board…. maybe not quite a century but more than most of the alternatives.

A-League coaches are saying but not doing

I’m a fan of pretty football and want to watch entertaining football.

I still find Victory entertaining to watch and I understand many Melbourne fans were sick of or frustrated with Merrick but I always liked him and the teams he put out.

Probably his biggest “fault” was loyalty but that is something I admire. I don’t mind seeing players stay for an extra season and much prefer it over the Rugby League way of getting rid of them early.

The problem with Melbourne Victory's 'hole' season

If your really Scottish wouldn’t that be a compliment 🙂

Postecoglou says no money for McKay

Squad doesn’t look that bad, a good central midfielder and it seems salvageable.
All those oldies are still decent players and I really think the system (that huge gap between the forwards and midfield) is making them look like they are struggling more than they should.
Last week they had the mid week game and I don’t think it would have been fair to expect much change from Magilton but with a whole week of preparation it will be interesting to see if they improve.

Is Nik Kalmar injured? If he isn’t then maybe Victory should talk to the Heart about him.

Magilton struggling to make a mark

They look pretty reliant on Fred, Dugandzic and Terra to me (I don’t think anyone isn’t reliant on their best 3 attacking players).

They do seem to have a system that works in defence and midfield and we have seen new players come in and do well but up front they don’t really look potent unless one of those 3 is turning it on.

Magilton struggling to make a mark

The W league out rates the A league because it’s on FTA. So greater Foxtel penetration is a good thing for those sports exclusively on Fox.

Serious Soccer fans would already have Fox so probably only small gains if the reason they are signing up is for the AFL channel.

However the combination of BBL/A league (pick your poison) and compelling winter content is a winner because it makes Foxtel a year round prospect. If there is 3 (only interested in AFL) or 6 months (only interested HAL/BBL) where you don’t have much interest it doesn’t seem compelling to get a subscription.

I have felt Fox have done a great job with their NRL and AFL coverage but with so many games on FTA it hasn’t been a must have.

Foxtel's AFL coverage is nirvana for footy fans

They also lost first team regulars to Olyroos duty although thanks to Goodwin only Dugandzic was missed.

Magilton struggling to make a mark

I can’t see Telstra paying much less.

If Telstra want out because all they planned to do was stream FTA games as is over the next five years and don’t have any other hook. Well that’s a complete waste of potential and the AFL could probably do better themselves.

They are already investing in their main website and are adding a lot of staff. Something like Telstra handing back the mobile rights would probably be the perfect warm up for the AFL to eventually record all the games themselves.

When your as big and as popular in the AFL nothing is a big set back.

I think we have to choose our battles.

After they have finished with under 17 and under 20’s that is a lot of rep football and time away form their clubs.

If they aren’t playing regular club football they are not going to make the Socceroos which should be the whole point of this thing and such a long campaign hurts their club careers at an age when it feels more make or break (a 19 year old is likely to get another chance soon enough). Jurman lost his starting spot when he went away for Olyroos duty and hasn’t won it back.

We are hosting the Asian cup, we qualify for the world cup proper and our clubs are now fully professional and participate in the ACL. We don’t need the Olympics like we used to and even if we won the gold medal it would count for naught in the football world.

In the past most of our players had access to European passports but that’s changing so they now have to compete hard for one of those 3 non EU foreign spots. I don’t think many of them can afford the time of for a “luxury” tournament.

Olyroos need to stand up for our proud Olympic history

The difference between the music sharing sites is they were providing access to material you didn’t “own”.

I don’t see the problem with me being able to watch what I am legally allowed to watch on TV on my much smaller portable TV (in this instance a mobile phone).
In some ways it’s like trying to ban people from watching black and white TV if they want to.

That said without owning the actual content just the system of delivery Optus seem out of bounds advertising the ability to watch AFL.

Mobile madness: Optus decision bad news for codes

p Tah, you sound like me 12 months ago.
I never understood the fuss about smart phones and the like. If I want to watch sport or play a video game I will do it when I am at home with a big screen. When I am out of the house I am out and generally doing something.

I live in Korea now and internet is cheap and fast. I knew Australia’s internet speeds weren’t great but never really grasped just how far of the pace they were because I had never experienced anything else.
Over here people watch live TV on their phones and there are about 10 channels, it’s quite common on the subway and busses….. and worst of all inside taxis (was a bit of a shock the first time my taxi driver watched TV while driving).
There have been plenty of times when I wish I could watch the A league live (not a full game but the option to watch for 5 minutes or so would be great) on my mobile. I wouldn’t want to muck around with recording and such though, I would want it in an easy to use form like an App so I could watch on impulse.

There are some huge lifestyle differences in Korea that make Internet TV more popular though.

Winter is cold and long so people spend more times in doors even when you are not at home.
Using a long distance bus or train is common
There seems to be an awful lot of waiting around.
