Sounds like a pretty convoluted, crazy set of interpretations expected on referees. Why not just focus on the really obvious easy rule that hasn’t been policed for about 8 years: offside.

All these “fast defence” teams are just bigger cheats than the average. All fans would appreciate it if the touch judges just kept both defences honest. There would be a ton more tries. And every fan could easily see the reason for the penalty.

It’s not rocket science.

What Super Rugby Aotearoa's law changes mean in the battle for global rugby supremacy

Yep an Italian club is a good bet. Which side of the IF debate was Campo on?

Finding Izzy’s next gig is a hell of a job

That’s what I thought would happen. There are quite a few more socially conservative Rugby countries than Australia.
SA and Argentina S15 teams may not bite this year, but next year? IFs tweets wouldn’t be a big deal in either country.
And if Qantas and Castle aren’t running RA I think IF would be back in the Wallabies in 2 years.
To paraphrase,
“On the wing, with a prayer.” ????

Finding Izzy’s next gig is a hell of a job

History doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme

Where it all went wrong for the All Blacks against England

And there is the difference: production line. ABs lose Kaino get Savea, lose Carter produce Mo’unga/ Barrett

Our production line is inferior. That’s nothing to do with Cheika’s tactics. Remember he was “coach of the year” in 2015! So he gradually unlearned his coaching skills over the next 4 years? Interesting conclusion from the author. Consider that none of our Super teams has had a winning record against NZ or SA teams over last 4 years. Think about it.

Nanimo is spot on: this article is a wet dream unless we address our production line

What will the Wallabies look like in 2020 - and at the next World Cup?

Credit to Raiwalui.
That giant Fijian Manly man has quietly got the best out a pretty non-superstar set of forwards.
Credit to Cheika for picking him too. It was a brave call. And then sticking with him despite the shambles of last year.

Wallabies (lineout) rising: Rugby World Cup quarter-final hope against England

One thing is for sure: one coach loses his job on Saturday.

Think about it. Two forwards who played together at Randwick. What a journey each has had to get here.

They’d respect each other. And yet here they are in a zero sum game.

Put your parochial keyboard to one side and remember both of them are probably really great guys, doing their best in a very tough gig.

I hope both teams go well and Cheik can have a smile on his face whenever he meets Eddie for a beer.

Just their best performance of 2019: the Wallabies' simple quarter-final assignment

Can’t remember exactly who they beat, but I think Argentina at the last WC were pretty amazing

Just their best performance of 2019: the Wallabies' simple quarter-final assignment

Win
No injuries
No suspensions
Penalty count less than 6

What the Wallabies must get out of the Georgia game

I think he will: to me Cheika is giving Pocock and Dempsey a start to see who gets 6 and who gets 20 in the next game

Hooper to the bench, To'omua at flyhalf among ten Wallabies changes for Georgia clash

Sorry but they are equally out of form. One is Cinderella story, the other is a Tah, but neither are playing anywhere near their best (sadly).
To’omua is, so let’s keep our fingers crossed and wish him well.

Hooper to the bench, To'omua at flyhalf among ten Wallabies changes for Georgia clash

Almost.
But I think you’ve got LSL wrong. Like Foley, he’s left out because he isn’t in consideration for next week. Too many chances, too little delivered.
Dempsey or Pocock to start at 6, with the other on the bench.
Otherwise, great team.

Mate that’s a terrific debating point. I agree with you.

I just don’t share your absolute conviction it won’t happen.

If I was coach in the QF and told JOC (just happens to be small) to run at Farrell all day, is that morally reprehensible (or just ironic)?

The Wrap: Red, yellow, green - rugby’s ‘traffic light’ World Cup

Super sure Geoff?

I remember a very intelligent, very decent bloke called Greg Chappell. Heat of the moment. Not against the law. Error of judgement: most definitely.

Soccer players do it all the time. Accepted. No, expected to fake it.

Rugby coaches and players – we’re so much better people when faced with red-card-winning temptation?

I certainly hope you’re right. But it’s an awfully poor situation we’re in now.

The Wrap: Red, yellow, green - rugby’s ‘traffic light’ World Cup

Or, we’re on the slippery slope Geoff…

The Wrap: Red, yellow, green - rugby’s ‘traffic light’ World Cup

“It hasn’t been a major issue” is because refs just don’t penalize it!

Every match, every team will have an opportunity just short of the line, and a player will make a head-first, 1-foot-off-the-deck, lunge for the paint.

What stops them? A defender’s shoulder/arm/whatever… almost always to the head.

Some philosopher once asked,
“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

Perhaps we could ask World Rugby,
“If a head impact occurs and a whistle isn’t heard, does a framework get triggered?”

The Wrap: Red, yellow, green - rugby’s ‘traffic light’ World Cup

Can’t come soon enough Geoff! Armchair box kicks and permanent off-side are killing the game (and Australia in particular with our traditional running rugby style). Not sure the Anglo-Celtic teams (and SA) want to unleash NZ, PI and Aus (and in the old days I would have said France): I think they have the game set up pretty nicely for themselves atm…

The Wrap: Red, yellow, green - rugby’s ‘traffic light’ World Cup

Great thought starter!

Ok here’s an extreme version where every game counts.

3 x Tiers of 6 teams
Tiers decided by ranking on 1st day of WC year.

Within each tier round robin ie 5 brutal tests over 5 weeks.
No “lucky” draws this way.
3 great tier 1 games , Fri/Sat/Sun
Same tier 2 and 3

SF
Cup 1 v 4, 2 v 3
Plate 5 v 8 (ie 2nd Tier 2), 6 v 7 (1st Tier 2)
Bowl 9 v 14, (2nd Tier 3) 10 v 13 (1st Tier 3)
Gives Tier 2 and Tier 3 something to really go for during pool games.

And 3 finals (forget about losing SFists)

How to make the pool stage mean more

Spot on

There are plenty of occasions (especially on the try line) when the attacking guy is head-first, 3 inches from the deck and travelling at speed.
The defence often stops them with a shoulder (or their own head), 3 inches from the deck and travelling in the opposite direction!

Who are we protecting?
What does this month’s “tackling framework” say about this?
Imagine if a TMO was asked to rule on one of those in slo-mo atm?

We play a dangerous game. It can’t be made safe.

World Rugby and the refs are killing the game

If NZ cops a red card and loses in this RWC are we all going to be blessed with a lesson in tolerance and forgiveness?

Ditto England?

The Germans have a good name for this emotion atm
Schadenfreude
Means taking pleasure in the bad luck of others.

The Indians have a wise concept to address this emotion. They call it
Karma

World Rugby and the refs are killing the game

Dempsey for LSL (he’s not taking his chances, not imposing himself)

Good call on White – Toomua (and the tough call on CLL)

Bit worried with the KK centres that the wings will never touch it. But Kurindrani looked great. They will probably keep JOC for that reason.

Hope Petiaia’s hammy OK

Five talking points from Wallabies vs Uruguay

I think you’re right.
Belgrano will get another airing. No love lost.
They love playing with a bit of uptempo chaos: the opposite of England.
They need their set piece to hold up, which is tough against England, but if they are thereabouts with 10 to go it will be fun.

The battle of the hemispheres: Who's feeling the World Cup heat?

Not my point Nick.
The opposite in fact.
If the Assistant Referees kept offside true then you wouldn’t have to worry about a lot of the other arcane and new rules that they make up.
TBH I don’t really care about the result of that match, I care about the fabric of our game. Ignoring the simple laws is how we have arrived at the current overstuffed rulebook, that is further bastardised by “interpretations”.
If that is the game yo really want, you’re welcome to it! ????

Why selection cost the Wallabies their Rugby World Cup game against Wales

No ref in his right mind would officiate the way you’re suggesting

Kepu in the last 5 minutes?

More obviously: that’s the way TMOs ref the game Nick. To the blade of grass, to the frame, to the letter of the law.

I’m fine with the result- Wales won. Good luck to them.

World Rugby does need to sort out offside though because the incentive to play attacking rugby (attractive rugby) is practically snuffed out. This incident is merely an example of the bigger problem.

Why selection cost the Wallabies their Rugby World Cup game against Wales

Nick
Let’s make this easy. Go back a frame when Genia doesn’t have the ball in his hand. Then answer this question honestly, are Welsh #1 and #2 in your picture behind the last foot of the ruck?
Answer: they’re not. Penalty to Australia. No try.
(Irrelevant whether interceptor was offside – it depends where you draw your red line and the frames of camera – But irrelevant)
Inconvenient truth for Roman Poite and World Rugby is that this is the case for every ruck and every team! Perhaps that’s why the TMO didn’t review.
Sometimes the answer is hiding in plain sight ????
Cheers Rob
