I am a die hard league fan. I love the numbers behind the game. I am a manly and NSW tragic.

Its just a basic percentage of the total tackles made of total attempts. For example 80 tackles have been made, and 20 have been missed. 80/(80+20) times 100 gives you 80%. Its very basic and I’m sure teams would use far more variables in working out there defensive quality, but this is the only way I can represent it quickly.

How important is the 'spine' in modern rugby league?

Cheers. Its frustrating being a stats lover and a NRL fan. The NRL are very poor at releasing statistics to the public. Hopefully it changes next year when Prozone become the principle provider to the NRL website. At the moment they are only providing data to the clubs and not the website. For now we are stuck with the AFL’s stats provider Champion Data.

I would have to agree. The ability of Cameron Smith to make average forwards into premiership winners is out of this world. The Cowboys have not recovered from the loss of Aaron Payne.

This link shows a break down of each teams total figures. http://rugbyleaguestats.wordpress.com/2014/07/16/reliance-on-the-spine/ I understand that this is a very simple look into a teams reliance on the spine, but I still found it interesting to look at.

Confronted by overwhelming statistical evidence people with only their opinion like you fall in a heap Ben. Jarryd Hayne is one of the top three Fullbacks in game. Dugan is a solid ball runner who can break tackles. He does not have the same timing, try scoring ability, passing game, kicking game or defensive game as Hayne. For you to say Hayne isn’t even a Fullback is just plain foolish. You are clearly not a fan of Hayne and that’s fine. Be sure to have evidence and examples that check out before you type complete rubbish.

Hayne is a talent, not a future Immortal

I agree completely Scott about Wade Graham. He was included in my original team on the bench. The term “built for Origin” is thrown around far to much for my liking. Michael Ennis and Beau Scott have received too many games on the belief that they are “built for Origin”. Work rate and talent is what is required. People claimed Robbie Farah didn’t have the game for Origin. I remember mocking them for saying it then and hear nothing but praise for him now.

Nice to see someone willing to be critical of Beau Scott. It appears his 3 line break assists to Queensland have been forgotten, he also didn’t manage a single run in the second half. We would have 10 back rowers better then him waiting in line.

McCrone played his best football at 5/8 when Terry was injured. I mentioned putting this combination together a few weeks ago. Good to see someone else agrees.

Cornish-McCrone combo can solve the Raiders' problems

Hayne is a ridiculous human. Joey said he is the most complete player he has ever seen. I agree, he has it all. It will be interesting to see where he sits in the scheme of things when he is Smith, Slater and Thurston’s age. He is approaching his prime. I am a one eyes Blues supporter but it’s hard to go past Thurston. He is also a ridiculous human.

Jarryd Hayne - the best rugby league player on the planet

We have become obsessed with lifting. I work in a reactionary workplace where any incident no matter how infrequent or unlikely leads to another level of administration. I do not like reactionary thinking. It’s the same as the local council finally doing something about a dangerous bend in the road after a death.

The Alex McKinnon’s accident has caused this reaction. I would like to know if their is any data on the frequency and severity of injuries sustained in lifting tackles, and compare it to injuries sustained in other more common actions in the game.

Alex McKinnon’s injury is a wake up call, but there were many unlikely factors came together to led to his horrible accident. We cannot lose our minds and panic every time a foot leaves the ground. Lifting tackles are a problem and should be policed and stamped out. We do not need to cry “give him 6 weeks” every time one happens. The right punishment for the crime.

I do agree though I think Reynolds and Scott should be sitting down for at least a match and Reynolds is very lucky to be available for game 2.

Rugby league is a disgrace

Fair enough on Gallen and Merrin I conceded that point earlier. You have only addressed one of the line breaks against Scott’s name the other two Slater and Inglis ran straight through him. They are indeed wonderful players but he is their for his defence. He also did not, as far as I observed take a single run in the second half. We desperately needed people to work out of our half and he never put his hand up. The Slater tackle has been mentioned allot, but if you look why we were in our end of the field, it was due to Inglis running over him in the previous set. He neutralised a situation he caused.

Thank you for replying max. I do not claim to be an expert myself. I do this further my understanding of the game and engage with experienced Rugby League fans like yourself. If my reply to you was passive aggressive, I apologise, you had me slightly on the back foot with the “get your eyes checked” remark.

So much so I watched the game again. I do not question Beau Scott’s effort, he certainly puts in. I question his output and positioning in defence. I am not married to my opinion and am happy to change if proven wrong, but after I watched the game again I am still of the opinion a Scott had us in trouble with a number of errors. Especially the Inglis miss in the dying minutes. This allowed the Maroons to camp in our end for the remainder of the game. He also failed to take a single run in the second half. We desperately needed to work out of our end in this period. The Slater tackle at the end was simply what he owed the team after a number of crucial errors.

Sorry about the loss of Josh Morris he was spectacular.

Cheers Max

Watch the game again. Watch Scott in particular and tell me that again with a straight face.

Scott selection blunder almost costs the Blues

I just finished watching the game again. If I got anything out of it, it’s even more criticism for Scott. In the first half he did miss two tackles that directly led to line breaks, the commentators and the replay confirmed Scotts heavy involvement in the Tate tackle. Scott’s involvement is what saved Reynolds at the judiciary. In the second half he joined the game at the 60th minute following Boyd’s second Try. NSW spent the vast majority of what remained of the game camped in our own half. I did not see Scott take a single run in the second half. Not a single run. Every other forward got in there for a gallop. With less then 5 minutes to go we had Queensland in their own half trying to close out the game, when Inglis ran over Scott and ran deep into our half, Queensland then forced a repeat and attacked our line to the death. The only good thing Scott did well was the Slater tackle after the bell. Let’s face it he owed us that tackle.

I will except a break now and then. 3 allowed in one game by a supposed defensive specialist is hard to swallow. If I have to except a break now and then at least give me a player with something to offer in attack. Like I said one for one swap with Bird. Hoffman doesn’t excite me, but at least he goes looking for work with the ball. Of course Cordner would be there. He also misses a tackle now and then but he offers allot in attack.

Thanks Scott I’m watching a replay now to see if I do need an eye check as some responders have suggested. So far my sight seems trustworthy.

Damn was starting to get deep in history there. Thurston missed both the tackles that led to the Blues Tries. He is ridiculously good in attack, but he is awful in defence. Thurston missed 7 on Wednesday night. The intimidation factor is talked about allot with Scott. It doesn’t seem to deter anyone from running at or over him.

Max are you a ” genuine experienced Rugby League analyst”? If so, please impart some of your wisdom on Beau Scott. If not please direct me to some solid information or sources on the subject. If you cannot provide me with the information, then stop wasting my time with useless comments.

Are you trying to say Carthage was a bunch of nomadic hunters? Instead of a well drilled organised fighting unit. Carthage was the second biggest power in the region. Hardly a pack if nomadic hunters. Scipio soon found a way to defeat Hannibal, sending him into hiding for 20 years before he killed himself.

Nomadic hunters don’t survive in or against a Roman style battle plan. They weaken the wall.

Spot on with Woods I’m a massive fan of that man and I wanted to see him charging from the first set. He didn’t disappoint when he finally got a run.

You are right Jay Bob in regards to Gallen and Merrin. Watmough may have been a better name to throw in there. He defends at 90%.

Scott selection blunder almost costs the Blues

I would say Beau did make 2 Try saving tackles, but he also allowed 3 line breaks, all of them resulted in a Try saving tackle from other members of the team. This greatly inflates the 9 Try saving tackles Sports Data spoke about.

Yep I am definitely not a word smith. Thanks for pointing out my stupidity Clyde. It’s more annoying when people let you continue making a fool of yourself.

State of Arrogance behind NSW's Blues

Yet another farce. This 8 year run of success is not built on guts and determination. It has been built in supreme talent. Smith, Thurston, Slater, Cronk, Lockyer, Inglis, Scott, Petro, Hodges and it goes on. There has been all the guts and determination required by the Blues just not a once in a generation gathering of talent.
